Diaper bags!!

Last kid I went crazy and had 11+ diaper bags because I couldn't find one I liked. This time I've promised DH no more than 2 so I've gotta make them count since I'm starting fresh. Any advice ladies??

Ive checked out some brands but then the reviews are so all over I'd rather get your advice!

Re: Diaper bags!!

  • What are you looking for in a diaper bag that you couldn't find in 11?! haha, maybe I'm missing something. I have a Vera Bradley diaper bag for #1 (sorry to all you haters out there.. I love me some grandma patterns), it's basic, not huge or tiny.. and it does the trick. Carries a few diapers, some wipes, some changes of clothes and now some snacks that he's a bit older. Am I missing something?

  • I got messenger bags and then didn't like the flap when trying to get something and hold baby. Then if get a small one saying so I won't over pack then ended up not enough space.

Secondly then my mom that kept my daughter didn't like my bags and picked one for herself same with DH.

I tried diff styles and in the hustle of getting out the door they looked great but hard to pack or the inside would be dark and then stuff got lost in the abyss of pockets and darkness.

I love VB - which one do you use?

  • And it was my first kid so I was on hyper drive about things being perfect - pretty and new. Now I want practical and not crazy expensive!!

  • I just have a Carters diaper bag right now, and it's perfect for us, but we will need a different/bigger bag for when we have 2. I'm thinking about getting a backpack style this time to aide in trying to tote around two kids when I'm by myself. I'm open to ideas for what works best for when you have more than one child, though.

  • For #1 I just ordered a Thirty-One bad that zipped and had the exterior pockets.  As my LO got older, I started using a backpack as a diaper bag instead.  I'll never go back to anything else.

  • Look into Lily Jade. They're $$$, but they're so nice. Hands down the best diaper bag I've seen (my sister in law has one).  If you can afford it, I'd really invest in one. Plus you can use it long after baby.

I, myself, went with a Nena and Co day bag II because they're more my style. I'm sick of spending so much money on diaper bags I hate and DH agreed I could get one. It's coming this week. I'm planning on using it to for our trip in May and my older three can use it as an overnight bag for Grandma's house before baby comes, so it will get a lot of use beforehand.

Both places also have Instagram accounts if you want to see pretty pictures.

  • @chavezrd2 - I don't see the exact style I got 2 years ago, but it's most similar to the "Stroll around diaper bag". I liked the changing pad that was attached to the side and was a really good size for us (I'm not sure if I'd use the stroller feature.. seems like it would be too heavy and tip the stroller if I took baby out?  I got it in a dark blue/purple/green floral pattern since my husband carries it too - didn't want it to be TOO flashy ;) and being a boy mom I wanted a more muted bag.. who knows. It hasn't gotten dirty at all which is amazing considering all of the places I toss it!

  • We just bought a Coleman diaper bag. The layout of it and the brand did it for me. I feel like it's a brand that hold up. With DS and DD we bought a cheapie diaper bag (I agree, the messenger type isn't the greatest IMO) and ended up regretting it. So I was ok with investing a bit more money this time.

With my son I used a Petunia Pickle Bottom boxy back pack and I really liked it but this time I wanted something that looked less "diaper" bag-ish.  I've actually already ordered this one:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008R5260M/ref=pd_aw_sim_sbs_75_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=51eShXkkkqL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100,100_&refRID=15TAMXR5XMQ9SHGYCTGX

I have recieved it and I'm in love!!! I can't wait to use it! It is very nice and extra roomy! It was kinda pricey but I consider it worth it!

The Timi and Leslie brand were designed to look more like a purse than the typical diaper bag.

wow 11? Oh my! Well... when I chose our diaper bag, the main things I wanted to take into consideration was:
must fit everything we need and must be neutral. So, I got a black one from Kipling. I love my bag. It is strong! Trust me! It survived many trips, and still looks new! I got it before being pregnant with DD! (don't judge me! I really liked it) lol
I couldn't find at the store to send the link, but I found on google the picture of the bag.
This is the one we have, but is is black.

  • With #1 we got the backpack style and felt it was too small for all he needed on a daily basis after he got older we switched him to a tote style. When #2 arrived I got a JJ Cole tote style and didn't really care how deep it was. I lost stuff in there constantly. Then as they got older I got them little backpacks and made them carry their own crap. Nothing like have your toddler tote around their own diapers and wipes. With this one I am looking into the Skip Hop Duo Signaute. I think I might check out some of the ones you all suggested too. Good luck in the search!

  • I don't have a diaper bag. I've always just used a large purse and shoved diapers in it. I try to keep a change of clothes of each kid in the car so I don't have to carry those around also.
  • We bought a Diaper Dude backpack style diaper bag.  I rarely use a diaper bag, a few diapers and wipes in my purse, if we are going anywhere for the day, I'll use the Diaper Dude backpack, I over-packed so many times when DS was little, now we just bring the necessities and leave a change of clothing in the car, just in case

  • I have a Skip Hop Duo, I think it's called. It's nice and I like it! But like a couple pp, I actually don't even use it anymore. I breastfed, so I always had milk with me, and I kept some diapers, wipes, and extra clothes in the car. Easy peasy and I didn't have to wear a purse! I hate wearing purses.

Now that DS is 2, I need even less stuff, but I will occasionally use the Skip Hop when we go on a long trip where I don't have easy access to the car.

  • I loved my petunia city carryall. I got a bigger skip hop bag this time
  • I use a Jansport backpack. Started with a Skip Hop messenger bag but find the backpack so much more convenient.  I looked for a more stylish backpack but found nothing big enough and practical enough. I looked into Vera Bradley backpacks but the straps don't lengthen enough and look very doinky on my 5'11 frame.
  • I have a skip hop but I don't love that it's just a magnetic closure at the top. If the LO gets to it, it's easily dumped out onto the floor.

I use it all the time, even with me 1.5 y/o. It's just full of snacks and small toys now.

What I'm looking for in a new diaper bag:
-Closure that is secure but easy to open when necessary
    -Washable
    -Holds my crap
-Doesn't make me look like a major dork

I'm really trying to avoid back pack style but I don't know if I'm gonna make it.

  • To me it seems all of these diaper bags are just way too big! I am 4'11 and my purse currently is about 6x8 inches and only holds my phone, keys and a small wallet. My mom swears I will need something with lots of room, but I am a minimalist and just don't see that happening.

  • lol I'm with @kosmo86! My purse is more of a wallet with strings and doesn't even fit my car keys - those either go in my pocket, loop around the purse strap or I'll just hold them. I always get so frustrated with large bags since my stuff just gets lost in the bottom (and I also have a really bad habit of accumulating a TON of crap - receipts, coupons, empty wrappers, etc when I have a purse that can hold it all). I think lots of pockets will be key for making this work!
  • @reesaXden ooh, thanks for sharing!! Bookmarking that brand.

I am petite also (5'0) so everything in store looks HUGE! Even the PPB bags..
  • I'm also in the petite and don't like purses category. I have a cell phone case that holds my debit card and license and that is all I carry usually. It's going to take some time getting used to a diaper bag...

  • Ya'll got me shopping!

Just ordered this on Amazon, based on dimensions, features, and included changing pad/insulated bottle thingamajig. Should be petite friendly (largest dimension is 14"). :)

  • I would highly recommend a backpack diaper bag. So easy to carry. You don't have to use a hand.

  • I have a large-ish purse that I use for normal outings and just toss in a diaper wipes a change of clothes and a snack or bottle. If we're out for the day I pack my timbuk2 Laptop bag. I love it because there are tons of pockets and I can throw in what I need (notebook, and laptop) in the laptop pocket. It's great :)
  • @mhilpisch10 Do you have any specific backpack style diaper bags that you would recommend? I think I want to switch to backpack style with this one so my hands will be totally free for both kids. I'm a SAHM so we will be out just the three of us often.

This is is personally the one I have. Fischer price. It has a nice wipe pouch, paci pouch, lots of compartments for bottles/sippy cups. But not too many compartments. I have no complaints and was so happy when I switched from the typical one should diaper bag. It was constantly falling off my shoulder/I would have to hold it. With 2 under 2 I don't have an extra hand to carry the diaper bag. Plus DH doesn't mind holding it. He didn't really care before but guys don't mind a backpack.

ps I'm sure you can get it for cheaper than toys r us. I just wanted you to see the image

  • Personally, I just use big purses. I spent a ton of money on a diaper bag the first time around and it was such a waste.

  • When we were creating our registry, I told DH to pick a diaper bag he didn't mind carrying.  We have the Fisher Price Backpack.  It has worked very well.  We also bought a diaper clutch that folds out into a changing pad (we stick it in the diaper bag) and really love it. It's great to have a pad in public restrooms or when changing at another persons house. Similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Cole-Changing-Clutch-Stone-Arbor/dp/B00AQ693RO/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1458138456&sr=1-3&keywords=diaper+clutch

  • We had a diaper bag for our son and then had twins and we needed something bigger, we found that a regular backpack works great for 4 kids...diapers, wipes, cups and snacks and then we usually have a change of clothes in the car or if we are out for the day we use 2 backpacks..my hubby even sported a pink minnie bag at Disney world...you can even put a makeup bag with pacis or diaper cream so they don't get lost
  • I'm a big sunglasses, big purse type of girl so I basically want all these diaper bags you all just had me googling. Unfortunately Im super rough On my diaper bags. They get shoved under the stroller, thrown in playgroung dirt, and now inadated with crumbs and squashed bananas from my constantly snacking toddler. I don't think I could stomach watching that happen to a gorgeous 150+ Bag. I've been using this cute yoga workout bag (since yogas been off the table for years now) and its super durable, easy to clear, and it happens to have all the pockets and space needed. Plus I like to think it gives me a fit mama vibe lol. The brand is Lug, www.luglife.com. I'll probably get a diaper bag, or two, since I have the excuse but this bag has seriously been amazing!

    **Removed for TOU violation**
  • Resurrecting this one - any recs on a semi-professional (neutral solid color, possibly tote shaped?) looking diaper bag? Or a diaper bag that you absolutely love?

I've searched and searched online, and am registered for this one right now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U6YP56E/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_img?ie=UTF8&colid=3UEFCOAL576FJ&coliid=I3SZMHAENC586&vs=1

I am looking on Amazon for options, but I am open to any site/brand. Maybe I should just go for function versus appearance...I'm probably overthinking this.

i have bought a VB bag, decent size, and hope it works out. its not a diaper bag persay but im hoping it will serve the purpose. it was a steal at TJMaxx.
  • I just bought a Lug overnight/gym bag the other day and I'm so in love and excited! Figured I'd go a bit bigger this time than a basic diaper bag since it'll be used with 2 kids and let's face it, 3 year olds love to bring along a lot of stuff... I also had to make sure it was very low key and not frilly or hubby would refuse to be seen with it!
