Has anyone been woken up from a sound sleep by a terrible cramp/pain in their calf? This is the 2nd time it's happened. I was finally able to fall back asleep this morning but when I woke up it hurt so bad it caused a limp. It has improved but I can still feel exactly where the pain is/was. What the heck.

  • I'm joining in a little late on the name changing topic but I kept my own last name for the first 5 years of marriage. When we decided to adopt our son I went ahead and went through the hassle of adding my husband's last name to mine. It's sometimes confusing when booking reservations and I'm listed under my maiden name. I'm glad that I did change it because it has helped with our family identity and unity. We still get rude questions from strangers (like is that his real father?) about our family.

Now on to a completely different topic. Is anyone experience anxiety still about their pregnancy? (I seem to remember an anxiety thread a few months ago) My baby is moving a lot, and seems to getting stronger. But I still have times where I am worried something might be wrong with him, something was missed in early screenings and any other number of fears may pop up.

Yup.  I think it's normal.  Or, I hope it is.

@mcb2016 Yes I still worry.... all the time. I don't think it will ever go away. Just try to assure yourself and think positive. I also pray a lot if that's something you're into or you think may help you feel better. Just cherish the moments of pregnancy and the comfort when your baby moves. We are all doing the best we can to get through and May will be here before we know it.

Yup. All the time. It is not nearly as bad as it was before, but when I don't feel her bouncing around in there, especially as we are nearing the end, I am getting nervous (not to scare anyone but there was a horrible thread on 3rd tri at xmas time. Poster was 33 weeks and wasn't feeling baby move. He died. I think about that all the time). I am also at the point that I worry about everything that can go wrong AFTER birth... like SIDS. Or diseases that cannot be identified in utero like blindness or epilepsy. Just a nervous momma I guess?

  • @Aquinna82 In some rare cases it's actually really helpful to know! DD had strep throat late last year so we took her to immediate care. The doctor told me he was only testing her for strep because I told him someone at her school had it, but there was a slim chance a kid her age would actually have strep. So had I not been nosy, she probably would've been misdiagnosed!

I think about the thread you're talking about all the time.  It still gives me chills.  And shortly after that I started reading another thread about cord accidents and I was basically a disaster for a few days.  And like you I worry about after birth too...from cord accidents (I know we've discussed that on here before, and it was reassuring, but I still think of it) and SIDS.  I actually registered for the snooza baby monitor that alarms if the baby doesn't take a certain number of breaths in a certain timeframe.  Some people said it alarms unnecessarily and would drive me crazy, and it might, but at this point I feel better having it.

And THEN when I get really worked up, I start thinking about things like cancer, epilepsy, Type 1 diabetes, autism...it goes on.  To paraphrase another May 16 Bumpie, the worry literally never goes away & there's always going to be something to fear.  I agree with @kp90 , all you can do is take care of yourself and your LO, think positively, and take things as they come.

Edited because I wrote "a wide May Bumpie" instead of "another," which...yeah I have no idea.  Seriously this baby is eating my brain.  Sorry other Bumpie, and you're not wide, you're beautiful.
  • @Aquinna82  I had the snuza with DS (& I really need to find it again) but I LOVED having it. We didn't have any false alarms and it allowed me to fall asleep without the worry.
  • @Aquinna82 , a friend of mine lost her son just after his 2nd bday. He had a cancer that attacked his brain and spinal cord. I think about him all the time, and can't even begin to fathom how to deal with that. I pray that all of us have the healthiest and happiest babies!

  • Glad everyone else still worries! DH just tells me I'm overthinking but there's so much unknown and just want LO to be ok. I usually feel the first few kicks the same time every morning and if she's late I always freak out until I feel her
  • I was worried I was the only one still being anxious. I've read all those threads and then some about heart breaking stories. It seems like everywhere I look lately I hear or read something that causes me to start getting a little freaked out. Luckily, it doesn't usually last long and I move on to something new. :) I can't believe how close we are getting to May!!!

Why are people compelled to ask "is there a bug going around" when they or their child is sick?  I don't understand this.  I've seen 3 FB posts in the past 24 hours asking this question (and yes I know I should just delete FB at this point because my patience is minimal).  "My kid is sick (or I am), anyone know if there's a bug going around?"  Um, does it matter?  YOUR kid is sick.  Why does it matter if anyone else is also sick?  I could maybe see if it was something like "My kid is displaying the classic symptoms of polio, has anyone heard that polio is back in the US, or am I safe to assume it could just be the flu?"

I feel the same irrational rage when people look out the window, see rain, and say "Was it supposed to rain today?"  Nope, no it was not.  You'd better go outside and start chastising those unauthorized rain clouds.
OMG! Yes! I understand it at work because if there is a legit bug going around, I want to be able to alert custodial staff and parents of susceptible kids, but in general, we should operate as though there is always a bug going around. It is following basic universal precautions: assume everyone has everything. The problem is people let their guards down when they don't hear of a specific illness in the community so I like to send out random reminders to teachers and staff about various infections, not saying that we have that going around, but just so they are aware that stuff exists and to keep up with reminding kids about hand hygiene, proper cleaning of tables/desks, and covering coughs/sneezes.

But on the FB Mommy Groups it is such a weird question. So, if there is a bug going around, how does that change how you will care for your kid? Maybe it is just misery loves company and they want to read all about the vomit and loose bowel movements that other parents are dealing with too?

  • Can certain foods trigger Braxton hicks? I always seem to get them after I eat Mexican, but I wonder if I'm making a weird association that isn't related at all.
  • @aliciad39 Yes. Spicy foods and other foods that stimulate the stomach (like pineapple) can trigger BH contractions which is why people use them to attempt to jump-start labor. You're probably not imagining it, but it also isn't a big deal because these things won't actually induce you if your body isn't ready to go anyway.
  • @kbrands7 thanks! Not worrying about inducing, but I had my feet up on my desk after lunch today trying to get through it, and I realize I do every Friday after I eat Mexican food... Maybe I should just go home on Friday afternoons :-)
  • TOTALLY just charred my dinner to a crisp, and it was a one pan meal. What the heck self, this was the EASIEST dinner you have in your meal vault, way to go. Now what?!

For those of you who are stock piling diapers: how do you decide what brands to get?  Are you getting a variety?   What about for sizing?  I  registered for huggies because that's what SIL recommended, but I didn't want to ask for too many because who knows what's going to end up working best for my kid?

  • So, I got a call today from my ob office stating my first round of bloodwork came back and I'm slightly anemic and told me to go get an otc iron supplement. I know I've seen other women who have mentioned having to take an iron supplement, any recommendations in regards to brands that have worked for you ladies?

I have literally been sitting in traffic now for an hour and a half to get home. I'm still 20 minutes (at least without traffic) from home. It only takes 30 mins to get home normally. I'm going insane.

@ncm0328 Are you currently taking a prenatal vitamin, and if so, does it have iron in it?  I was also told I was slightly anemic after my blood draw.  I asked if I could just switch from my prenatal gummies with no iron to One a Day prenatals that are loaded with iron.  My OB said it was fine.
  • @Bluejay3030 yes, my prenatal vitamin has iron in it, 27mg which the bottle claims is 150% of daily value? Apparently that's not enough
  • @ncm0328 I'm taking the Up & Up Target brand iron supplements. I've heard they make you constipated, but I only had that problem for a couple of days after taking them.

I've bought both Huggies and Pampers because those seem to be highly recommended.

  • @ncm0328 I take ferro sequels. I get them off amazon. I've been on them for a while because I was anemic before I got pregnant and once I got pregnant I just stayed on them.

The rice Krispy treat in the shape of his pregnant wife is creepy. I think I'd be pretty pissed if MH's friends did that.
  • Toddler moms - how do/did you know when your toddler was ready to drop their nap? Or cut it short? 2 feels really young, but we are engaging in a serious nighttime battle this week and his pediatrician suggested cutting down the length of his nap. I'm not ready to give up nap time for my own sanity, but 9pm feels like a very late bedtime for a 2 year old.

Usually there's not enough iron in your prenatal vitamins. Also the daily intake thing is a guide for the average person and doesn't account for things like being pregnant where the iron demand goes up. This is one situation where I'm going to be less helpful than your American counter parts because im not familiar with what iron supplements are available there...what I can recommend you do is go and see your pharmacist and they can most certainly help you select the correct product :D

@ncm0328 another vote for feosol. It has double the iron of most prenatals. Be sure to try to get heme iron in your diet too (found in fish, meat, poultry) since it has a form of iron that's easier for the body to use and can help the body to use the nonheme from vitamins, fortified grains, and veggies. Vitamin c helps absorption of iron too. (I have thalassemia and doing all of these things has helped me to keep close to normal iron levels much of the time.)
  • @ncm0328 - My results also said I was mildly anemic, and my doctor recommended 325 mg ferrous sulfate per day, and I'm taking Nature Made brand. No problems so far, I've actually been a lot less constipated than I was a month ago, although I'm sure that has nothing to do with the iron supplement.

@Bltbear82 Did he just turn 2?  If so, I'd be more inclined to think it was the 2 year sleep regression than him being ready to ditch the nap, but I guess every kiddo is different.  DD went through a sleep regression just before 2 as she was learning to converse better.  She didn't fight bedtime but did wake up really early  and take short naps for a couple of weeks.  When it was finally over, her nap lengths went from consistently over 2 hours long to closer to 1.5 hours, give or take.
  • I was told I was severely anemic (if I didn't do anything I was looking at a possible transfusion after birth). I started taking regular iron supplements and I also started taking chlorella, which is an algae that has tons of iron in it!

My doctor recommended 'Slow Fe' 45 mg. I've taken it both pregnancies with no issues. I guess it is a slow release iron supplement (I might be totally off here), but it's supposed to be easier on your stomach. I've never been constipated while taking it either!

Eat some bananas or chew on some TUMS. The potassium helps to cut down if not eliminate this. :)

We decided on Pamper's Swaddlers with DD1 bc of the reviews, word of mouth, and bc we were told specifically that Huggies weren't good for blow outs. Fortunately, Pampers Swaddler's are amazing and DD always blew out of any Huggies she had on. Huggies wipes also dry out her skin on her butt but are great for thoroughly cleaning her hands and face. we use Pampers wipes as well.
