Wubbanub pacifiers need to go away.

Ha, I've never used one (DS is actually a great listener and never a runner), but I have two friends who SHOULD invest in getting them!  The first friend's little boy runs from them any chance he can: into parking lots, up to strangers, etc.  Another friend has a little boy who does practically the same.  Yesterday she was telling me that at his DR appointment he ran out of the room, into other patient rooms, then out into the lobby and then into the parking lot.

I'm intrigued why you say this. Other than them being crazy expensive. DD only took the soothie paci's and it was so nice that she couldn't throw them out of the car seat when she was little. Granted, she used paci's like toys more than for soothing (primarily a thumb sucker) but it was really nice to only need two pacifiers since we didn't have to worry about losing them.

@mrstrax As an SLP, I cannot get behind the added weight dangling out of a kid's mouth. Especially once teeth come into the picture.

Sooooo we bought one for DD. She was AWFUL when she was around 1. Since we have teacher passes to SeaWorld and we had Disney passes, we were often in places that she would run off from us. It was bad. She wouldn't hold our hands, would yank away from us and take off. She wouldn't stay in her stroller. Would either climb out or scream bloody murder if we strapped her in. So we bought her a super cute bright blue elephant Eric Carle one. She LOVED it. But...we actually never ended up having to use it. Between the time we bought it and the time she learned to hold our hands (which was only a few months, and we didn't see any hope of her learning that so it came as a shock) we never went anywhere we needed it. I actually lost the leash because we detached it to let her have her little elephant backpack. So I totally judged people who used leashes until I got my child. But then again, never had to use it. So maybe she didn't really "need" it, we just needed a little more patience until she learned proper behavior? I don't know...oh well. I don't judge anymore, because I've had "that kid", even if she did learn quickly. For me it was all about her safety over caring what other people thought.

My parents had 3 kids in 18 months. We lived in Orlando and went to Disney frequently and they often used leashes. I support them.

Ah that makes sense. I didn't think about after the kiddos are up and moving since DD only used hers when it could be supported by laying on/next to her instead of dangling. Not to mention she didn't get teeth til 10 months old...

I think they look ridiculous but it's a far better alternative than the way my parents got us to behave, plus I know I'll have THAT kid. It's karma and I don't want to choose between keeping the kid cooped up at home and instilling the fear of God in him or her.

I am ok with instilling the fear of mommy.
DS already knows he has to hold my hand or it means he can't walk around.

My major beef is with the parent who had their child on a leash and isn't paying attention to them... the kid is still doing things they shouldn't be and the parent is too concerned with their phone/conversation to be bothered.

  • Do that many people even use child leashes? I have only seen one kid ever in my life with one.

Not when that fear means getting the shit beat out of you, which is what I was referring to.
  • @fbanke42 I got a child leash/backpack as a gift at our baby shower, and was slightly offended... thankfully it came with a gift receipt.

@AK118 I totally had to look up what a
Wubbanub was... but now that you say that, it makes total sense!

As for my UO... It may be more of a FFFC, but here it goes anyway... after YEARS of hating the Biebs... I like his new songs on the radio

It's terrible and creepy. You're not missing out at all.

On a related note: I don't think monkeys (flying monkeys OR real monkeys) are cute, I think they're disgusting and creepy. In the event we receive anything for baby girl with a monkey on it, I will need a gift receipt because we WILL return it.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who hates monkeys... They are effing weird.
  • I used to hate baby leashes until my nephew... And he was one of those that you would yell at him until blue in the face, or take him in the bathroom and spank him, w/e and he still thought it was hysterical to run off into crowds of people, or into the street in front of cars. He liked his monkey backpack leash though... My other nephew was a sweetheart and didn't need it. I'm glad they exist because nephew 1 could possibly be a grease stain on the pavement at this point, but I definitely judged parents who used them HARDCORE before that experience.

I love wubanubs, but I'll be sure to keep an eye once teeth start forming. Most of the kids I've seen using them don't walk around with pacifiers but use them in car seats or in the crib for sleep soothing...

  • Do that many people even use child leashes? I have only seen one kid ever in my life with one.
I live in theme park utopia so to me they are pretty standard...

I used to get the belt and it's definitely not something I would do. I think corporal punishment was very common 'those days' and now it's really frowned upon.

I think it depends on the kid and the severity of the punishment. My dad had a really bad temper and he took it out on us for small things. I didn't need to be hit because the fear of disappointing my parents was enough, so I was rarely spanked. On the occasions I was, it was bad. My brother, on the other hand, would only respond to being spanked because he didn't care if something was taken away from him or he was given extra chores. My big take-away is that if the parent is upset, the punishment is not going to work the way it's intended because the kid isn't going to understand why they're being hit. It's like rubbing your dog's nose in poo after the fact - they're not going to get why and they're just going to be afraid of you. If you can catch them in the act, you scoop them up and take them outside to do it the right way and praise them when they do it correctly.

I really hate onzies or anything with a phrase or saying on it " daddy's girl" "sweetie" etc...I don't like little characters on clothes either... Just no
I don't mind Daddy's Girl (one of our take home outfits has something like that on it), but I hate the "Princess" ones. We got one set of hand-me-down onesies from DH's cousin that had crowns and princess stuff all over them; they went straight to the giveaway pile.

Nope, nope, nope.  Best money I ever spent.  Those first few weeks of chasing her soothie in every pile of dog hair in our house was awful. Wubbanub for the win! Duck and Dog are still her best friends just without the pacifier attached
  • And how can you not love monkeys??

  • I strongly dislike clothes with Disney characters on them. I cringe at the thought of giving my son a onesie with Winnieh the Pooh on it. I don't mind others using it, but just not for me.
For me, it depends on the character and how ridiculous the character looks. For some reason I adore most of the Monsters INC baby things, but I hate anything with Mickey on it. I also hate any of the Disney princesses on baby things.

Yeah Monsters Inc is cute, I was also mainly thinking of Classic Disney stuff and princess stuff. Ugh.

Well I kinda grew up with most of my family working for and retiring from Disney so I'm going to have to disagree with you both on this one... I hate anything typically baby looking though, such as ducks, giraffes, elephants, monkeys, etc., and you can bet if I wasn't convinced such things will just be covered in food or feces at some point I wouldn't even accept it as gifts. I also dislike shirts with slogans on them for kids and adults, and the only clothing I have with words or pictures on them are from Disney or concerts.

(I want to add that foxes are different, but that stems from my obsession with the Disney version of Robin Hood)

I'm not crazy about character things on clothes for babies and toddlers at all, but once they're 3-5, I really don't give a shit. Now that DS can dress himself, it's whatever he likes (within reason) as far as play clothes are concerned. His Minecraft tshirts are his faves, whatever floats your boat buddy!

Trying to learn etiquette for dressing a girl STILL makes my head spin. Girl stuff is stupid expensive and has so many pieces! What?
  • And how can you not love monkeys??
Because they smell, look creepy, and are more trouble as a pet than anything else? I also dislike the idea of my child being compared to any animal I view beneath humans. (Which is all of them, and why do 90% of baby clothes have to have stupid arbitrary animals on them?) I've never liked animals, except cats, and that's sparingly because I still would never want to co-habitate one again.

Yes!!! My three year old has one shirt with Elsa and Anna on it because she picked it out, but babies don't have a preference. Just no.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • Maybe I'm weird but I think some baby Disney stuff is cool. I got my little dude a little Lion King onesie set with a little matching T-shirt, and Simba pajamas for later and it's damn cute. I also got a set of baby Mickey socks for like 4 dollars but they are pretty classy looking....

I am aware of how popular it is with Disney baby clothes, which is why I thought it would be an UO  it's just not for me
