Re: UO Thursday

  • I think the comment is just pointing out the flippancy of the "move to Canada" comments vs. the sensitivity of the immigration issue. We are united as Americans, whether or not we are for or against a specific presidential candidate, so we need to be aware and come together as a country. We need to recognize that  we are still better off than many other countries, despite who our president may be. The comments  may be mostly in jest, but we still need to recognize that there are many people currently struggling and giving up everything just to come TO our country and to get their families out of turmoil. It's an interesting dichotomy of entitlement vs. true desperation.

  • @TheTamedShrew @Alyeena Thank you for totally getting where I'm coming from. I wrote that pretty late at night and in the morning I was like errrr did I explain myself well enough? @TheTamedShrew that post is what really put it into words for me. I don't necessarily agree with the immigration part, because from what I've seen at least the majority of people who want to pack up and leave post-Trump election are pretty pro-immigration. I guess you'd have to be if you want to pack up and move it up here. But as others have pointed out the whole "lets move to Canada post-Trump" is an entitled statement. It's NOT easy to move here. It's easy to stay here, sure, but move here and actually be a citizen? Absolutely not. There is a quota each year for citizenship grants and it fills up fast. One of my best friends is getting married to an Aussie guy, he was here for 6 months, got a tourist visa, then proceeded to try to get a working visa which took 5 years, and 9 years later has just managed to get his citizenship. It's no walk in the park. So some Americans thinking they can just hop over the border and start and new life says to me that "we can move anywhere we want, live work and play, because we're American and therefore it's easy for us". Nay nay.

  • I think the "move to Canada" thing is more of an ironic sentiment just because Canada basically already has most of what Trump is actively against (socialized Healthcare, willingness to accept refugees, paid maternity leave, etc).

But even though Dh and I have joked that Trump getting elected would be an ideal time to leave (we want to live abroad at some point, but are planning to wait until our kids are a little older), in serious talks, it's actually more of a compelling reason to stay. We feel that since we're not part of the demographic targeted by Trump, that would make it even more our responsibility to stay and fight against any policies he'd try to enact.
