My UO for today - I think dogs are the worst pets.
They are so gross! I am tired of watching my 3 dogs sniff each other's asses and privates, and eat random poop from the dog park. Then they want to lick you!!!! Like hell no, ya little nasty!
On top of that, they turn up their noses at the expensive, healthy dog food we buy for them. Seriously? Wtf tastes WORSE than POOP???
Then there's the nonsense barking. Why? Why?! That person/squirrel/cat/delivery truck is 5 miles away!! Is barking really necessary?
If they bark and wake the baby when she's here, I'm going to go homicidal.
I know a lot of people love dogs, and that's ok! Clearly, I am a cat person, 100%
And see? I find cats to be the most useless creatures. Except sometimes they'll catch bugs/rodents but so do dogs.
lol
DH told me his mom always had a cat (outdoor, usually) to catch the mice, since their yard backs up to a cow pasture. I just gave him a weird look. My dogs have caught everything from birds and mice to freaking rabbits and brought them to me. Who needs a cat? All they do is offer you disdain and then try to scratch you when you pet them.
I wish my dogs caught bugs. They couldn't care less about bugs in the house.
What I like about cats over dogs is that they are mostly quiet, and less needy. They sleep all day, and only come to you for love once in a while. These damn dogs are up my butt 24/7 needing attention, and it's only gotten worse since I became pregnant.
Oh, and I hate picking up their poop. I finally got a pooper scooper, and it's the best thing ever. I told DH I needed it because I was pregnant and can't squat/bend easily (true) but honestly, I was absolutely sick of picking up the poop with a doggie bag and my hands....all warm and squishy and smelly. Puke! I'm keeping the scooper forever!
I am perfectly fine if this baby stays put until his/her due date, or even comes a few days late. I don't know if I'm in denial or what, but I am just not mentally prepared to go into labor any time before my due date. My other three were all born right around their due dates, so I think I will probably go until the end. (Fingers crossed)
We have awesome dogs who do kill bugs but I think it's mainly because DD gets laughing her head off and them and that eggs them on. Yeah they can be kind of gross with the Butt smelling/licking thing. But our pit has chased away a couple of sketchy characters and our lab adores DD and let's her do whatever she wants to her...which includes putting mascara on her. We gave up on the expensive healthy dog food and feed them IAMS, which they love. I am not thrilled but I pick my battles.
Cats....I'd like to own one but the dogs aren't friendly.

I agree. There is a 90% chance this is our last one and I want to enjoy being pregnant although I know I am going to get more uncomfortable with each day. I am also being selfish. The longer I stay at work the longer I make money and we might be able to close on the house before I go out fingers crossed and I don't have to worry about money too much.
I have NEVER been a dog person, and I don't go to people's houses who have dogs because they are awful. I don't think it's cute to mauled by your "furry baby" and I don't like smelling like one when I leave.
I won't own a cat again, because every cat I've had has been a complete asshole, but friend's cats are ok. I have a wonderful relationship with one friend's cat, and he loves me.

Even as a dog person, I think it's rude when people let their dogs jump all over guests. If we know we're going to have people over, we put our dogs up. They aren't our kids, they're our pets. Love them to death, but seriously, they're fine in their little area.
Now if you drop by unannounced, you're probably going to get jumped on because my dogs think that everyone needs to be hugged around the waist with their paws...

One of my cats is higher-maintenance than either of my dogs. His bowl is only half full of food? Meowing until it's topped off. There's more than one turd in the litter box? Don't try to get anything accomplished until his litter is perfectly clean. The dogs get to play outside in the yard because they can entertain themselves? That asshole will literally sit on me or walk between my feet, tripping me, until I put him on my shoulder, carry him outside, and do laps around the yard. I love that cat but he's a jerk. Oh, and he and the other cat like to chase each other around the house all night, making a ruckus like it's the apocalypse. Oh, and he's a Maine coon so when he vocalizes, he's too loud to ignore. He's never killed anything, ever. He also likes to sit on us to wake us up in the middle of the night if he is feeling needy or just bored.
My dogs, on the other hand, are happy to play outside all day no matter what the weather. They come in sporadically to eat, we keep the outside water bowl topped off, and they come in when it gets dark. After coming in, they either cuddle with us on the couch or they pass out on the rug. And once we go to bed, they're quiet until we get up. They are endlessly patient and if they get annoyed, they walk away. I have no qualms about them being around the baby. Jungle cat is getting kitty caps because I won't have him swiping at my baby when she cries.
I love my dogs but I admit they do gross stuff. I don't let them lick me or let them on furniture but they don't try to lick very often. They also rarely bark at all so I am lucky. My cat is the most annoying of my animals. He deliberately does what he is not supposed to and he is gross as well and makes a kitty litter mess all over the area his litter box is in. He has caused way more damage that has cost me money because he has a habit of chewing cords on electronics. The only useful thing he ever does is let me know when there is a scary bug around. In Hawaii he once held a cockroach in his mouth while I went and got the can of Raid.
Cats are a big old nope. I don't mind when other people have them, but I found them way grosser than dogs. The cats I had with my ex would climb all over our kitchen counter no matter what we did to keep them off. The younger one was an asshole and destroyed the nice leather club chairs my parents passed on to us, and also loved to claw the shit out of our door frames, especially when you were looking at her. Both of them were terrified of any strangers and would hide under the bed or in a closet. The younger one did kill a scorpion once, so that was a plus.
Dogs...yeah, they can be gross and they can be a pain, but you know they love and adore you. Our older one sounds fairly ferocious (he's really a sissy, but he doesn't sound like it), so has served to scare off people that shouldn't be around. And they love the crap out of the kids. I seriously cannot wait for baby + puppy/dog photos.

My cat often looks at me from her perch on the table, where he is not allowed, and cock his head to the side as if to say, "Do something, bitch." I swear it would be easier to have a teenager. And yes, I have considered covering the counters and table with double-sided tape but it's just so much work...
Dog person here! I've never lived with a cat but the stories I hear from my friends I'll stick with my dog. We've been pretty lucky, she doesn't eat poop that I've ever seen, was potty trained in about two weeks and has never chewed anything that she wasn't supposed to. She's a big 50lb furball but the biggest baby!
My Maine Coon was fluffy orange ball of fur. He was half cat, half dog. He loved having our attention, and greeted us at the door (he had to be held and loved on), but he was also an outdoor cat, and he spent most of the day patrolling the woods, or sleeping in the yard.
He pooped outside in the woods, so we didn't have a messy box too often.
The only complaint I had about him was that he was allergic to everything!! He always had a rash, and he had to eat special food. He was allergic to fleas, too. But he was so sweet, and he never scratched or bit anyone.
I know a lot of people talk about having an asshole cat. That sucks. Maybe I just got lucky with my 3? Then again, I've never met a mean cat, and I even volunteered at a no kill cat shelter (heaven on earth to this cat lady! haha!)
Cats pee and poop in the house. So do humans, but we flush our waste away; with cats, it just sits there. Cat owners constantly have urine and feces just sitting around in their house, and I've met very few of them who change the litter (not just scoop the turds, but actually change the litter) every day.
Dogs, on the other hand, go outside; if your dog goes inside, you clean it up immediately, not a couple days later, because you can't just leave puddles and piles lying around.
Ergo, dogs are way less gross than cats. Also cuter and smarter and way nicer (the nicest cats I've met are still less snuggly than the most obnoxious dogs).

My cat always went outside. She refused to use a litter box and would hold it until we let her out.

I also have a big orange Maine coon and he's sweet...but he's still a bigger asshole than the dogs. I'm also convinced he's plotting our murders. Andplusalso, the cats spend WAY more time licking themselves than the dogs do, possibly because my dogs run outside in the yard almost all day, every day, so by the time they come in they just want to be loved on.
ETA: I'm happy with one less dog lover in the world, because someone needs to love the cats too!
I would like to chime in in defense of cats! I love my two, sibling kitties, who are well-behaved, well-trained, know their names and come when called. It takes work to have well-trained cats, as much as dogs according to my husband, but owners rarely give them that kind of time because the perception is 'cats do their own thing.' My cats are trained not to get on counters or scratch furniture and are toilet-trained. If they don't like the people in our house, they simply leave the room and hide until they are gone. We also have a closed-door policy and they are not allowed in our bedroom (I can actually leave the door open while getting ready and they will just hover in the doorway and peer in) because ew cat hair all over the bed? Hell no.

Well, can we agree that people who visit someone else's home and complain about the animals who live there are the worst? Seriously, the dogs and cats live here, you don't - and you're welcome to leave at any time. I don't like having company anyway, because I have to wear pants.
If I were to have a dog it would be a medium or big dog...nothing ankle biting size. Only way I can survive with cats was to declaw (it's own UO) and fix them. All they do is sleep, ate, and poop. They have never sprayed or pee/poo outside the litter.

My cats don't spray or miss the litter box and are not declawed.
I feel so bad for our dog. She went blind last summer, and so I can't let her run around anymore because she runs out into road. I have to keep her in her kennel. We walk once a day, and she seriously runs into every little thing. She also barks at nothing! I get that she's adjusting, but she doesn't even bark at people. I can go out to her at midnight and she won't bark. But she'll bark at everything else. I had to get her a bark collar because we have neighbors. And she's HUGE. I have a difficult time walking her, and she only listens to dh, who works out of state. It's a nightmare. Cats, though. I have outdoor cats because we have cow fields behind us and they keep the mice away. I feed them once a day and they leave us alone. I can deal with that.
In re: election - I think it is a complete waste of the vote to vote 3rd party/write in or 'not vote at all.' Those votes will literally have no meaning. Even in a battle of the lesser of two evils, if all the dissenters still vote 3rd party and Trump was to be elected, I'd have a tendency to want to pass some of the blame in their direction.
Also, not that there is anything wrong with Canada or or their healthcare providers (here's looking at you @thaisac1), but empty threats of people moving to Canada (or any other country) because they don't get their way are also incredibly annoying and misguided. Especially in reference to disagreements with taxes, healthcare, etc.. I heard somebody say once "I don't want socialized healthcare so I'm going to move to Canada!" Okay, buddy, you do that.. stick it to the man.
I really want to rehome my dog. I cannot stand him.. but if I did it, regardless of my reasons, I'd never hear the end of it. I don't dislike all dogs, but he drives me effing insane and my son is scared of him. (He's not aggressive at all but he's a jumper).
I didn't realize there was such controversy about declawing cats? I looked it up though and ouch. I love cats but grew up to be super allergic so I can't have any even if I wanted to.

Have you tried playing her music? My dalmatian barks at little noises if the house is quiet but music seems to be enough noise that he doesn't notice the little sounds that would make him want to bark.
@cmjenkies I could not morally vote for Trump or Clinton, so I'll vote 3rd party or not at all if those are my options. Voting 3rd party for the president isn't worthless, because you're stil voting on other officials who do stand a chance at being elected. Also, most dogs aren't difficult to train not to jump and IMO it's worth it if you can't do it yourself and have to pay a trainer. Athena was a jumper and a licker, the two qualities I find most annoying in dogs, and she was broken of both habits very quickly. Now when I come home, she sits and rocks excitedly but never, ever jumps. With her weighing 70+ pounds and being less than a year old, it was so worth the time put in to train her.

The belief that voting third party is pointless is the only reason why it is so. If people would stop thinking this, we could stop this terrible two-party system.
While I believe our country could benefit from a viable third party, we have to be realistic in that at least for this election (and probably many more to come) we are in a two party system and that either the democratic or republican nominee will be the next president. This is just fact and to deny it is pointless. Yes, you can vote for a third party candidate - and you are still doing your 'duty' by voting and expressing your voice - however, it is falling on deaf ears. We have the power to elect what is arguably the most powerful position in the world and I agree with cmjenkies that a third party vote at this point in time is essentially the same as not voting. I also believe in today's age to be a single issue voter is an outdated approach to tackling our political system. Yes, it's easy to say I think abortion is wrong so I'm voting for a republican, or likewise, I support gay marriage so I'm voting democratic. These issues are important, don't get me wrong, but there are so many more pressing matters that in the next several decades will shape not only the future or our country but of our world. This is why I think it's vital to vote for someone who can actually sit in office and have the power to affect global policy - Weather it's a candidate you truly support or it's who you find to be the lesser of two evils. For a third party candidate to be viable we have to let our political system actually work itself out of this mess and create within our existing parties a true new party (which if Trump indeed wins the nomination I think we may be in the beginnings of a true evolution within the Republican Party as the base seems to not morally or politically support the man who would be their representivive). Merely throwing some votes to a third party candidate without a credible base behind them and zero chance of winning just isn't going to do it. Okay, off my high horse now!

I've always been of the opinion that you should just bite the bullet and vote for the lesser of two evils. However, this election, I'm with @AmadorRose and could not morally vote for either Clinton or Trump. To me, it would literally equate selling my soul for a vote because I so strongly oppose their stances on many issues. To the thought that you shouldn't vote on a single issue, I do believe that if you have a strong moral opinion on an issue, then let it be a deciding factor in where your vote goes. We got this far with Trump precisely because people aren't standing for anything anymore.

In this particular election, I firmly believe that it is pointless. I am not a fan of the two party system either. I generally lean on the liberal side of the political spectrum with most issues, but I don't particularly love anybody who is running for the Presidency. However, the majority rules.. and the majority is going to vote between the party lines at the end of the day and I would rather use my vote in the best interest of this nation - which is to keep the Donald from becoming the face of the free world. There is not enough media coverage to support an alternative at this point in time. The Republican Party has dug itself a serious hole with Trump and needs to take a stand against him as it is obvious he does not truly stand for their party's policies. It feels to me like he has just jumped on the fact that that particular party is composed of what (appears to be these days) a less educated group of supporters overall/people who are so unsatisfied with the current state of the union that his grandeur rhetoric has become appealing to them. Like @olivemama said, voting should not be a one-issue decision.
Honestly, I think being the president is a completely shitty gig. If change really is going to happen, we need to pay as much attention to the other elections that move folks to Washington. Congress is a force that undergoes far less scrutiny during election season but has a stupid amount of power.
Okay, that's too much politicking for me before breakfast. TGIF!

As for the two party system...
I seriously use that last picture all of the time when talking about reasons why I'm not affiliated with a party!
If you really start thinking about "point," it's pointless to vote at all if you're not in a swing state. Oregon votes Democrat every time anyway. Although I think it a state were finally going to get a majority vote for a third party, it would be a weird state like Oregon. And if you really think about it, all life is pretty pointless so our president doesn't even matter.

I don't mean that to sound negative. It actually is comforting to me.

I won't own a cat again, because every cat I've had has been a complete asshole, but friend's cats are ok. I have a wonderful relationship with one friend's cat, and he loves me.
Now if you drop by unannounced, you're probably going to get jumped on because my dogs think that everyone needs to be hugged around the waist with their paws...
Then again, I've never met a mean cat, and I even volunteered at a no kill cat shelter (heaven on earth to this cat lady! haha!)
ETA: I'm happy with one less dog lover in the world, because someone needs to love the cats too!
ETA: just don't have a cat if you want to declaw.
That's a big IF, because 3 dogs and a baby will be more than enough for me! Haha!
@dancingsphinx22 I tried the caps and they totally chewed them off. They looked cool for a while since they were colorful.
As for the two party system...
TGIF!
