I can't stand Bernie Sanders. I don't get why everyone is flocking to the polls to vote for him. 90% of the stuff he says he will do will never happen. Free everything, for everyone!! Total BS.
It's funny you say that because I looked at his women's rights platform and I would vote for him based solely on that. He supports universal health care and he supports companies providing a minimum of 12 weeks paid family leave. Canada has both these things and more. It is possible. (Our government is actually looking to increase our family/maternity leave from one year to 18 months)
Hillary is supporting the same leave (12 weeks).

Woohoo! I haven't looked at her platform yet.

While I agree it is an important issue, I personally wouldn't vote for a candidate solely because of this. There are so many other aspects to consider nationally and internationally.

If our new president destroys the economy and foreign affairs, I think we will be in a lot more trouble and maternity leave won't even seem that important compared to what could potentially happen.

I hope I don't get flamed too much for that...it is the UO thread.....

That's my problem too so no flaming from me.  Each candidate has like, a single thing that I agree with and the rest of their platform epically sucks.  Each of them would likely run the country into the ground if they were able to get their whole platform, just in their own unique way.

Also anyone watching the GOP debate?  I feel these gifs pretty much sum it up...
  • I did see today a former KKK leader trying to rally his "people" to get out and volunteer for the Trump campaign....

Full disclosure: i'm a Patriots fan, so I realize I'm biased.

  • My UO is that I don't get it when people want to name their child something knowing that they will call them something else. To me, it just makes sense to name them what it is that you want to call them.
Meaning like a nickname or something else? I'm so tired and confused!
  • I hate politics because I feel like all politicians are ridiculous. I can't stand watching the debates because they behave like children and I get really frustrated. I haven't been following US politics in particular lately because I can't believe that Trump is a real candidate. And ever since I saw the "bad lip reading" of the debate I can't take any of them seriously because I have those other voices in my head!!

There's been a lot of people on the names board at least that say something to the effect of I want to call my child ______, what is a full name that could have that as a nickname?  Personally, I agree with @dennyandlee, it's one thing to consider the nicknames that could come with the name you choose for your child (my parents almost named me michelle until they realized that shelly was a nickname for michelle and it rhymed with our last name) but choosing a formal name based on the nickname that you want your kid to have is a bit ridiculous, especially since kids don't always like the nickname you've chosen or will get one of their own from their friends based on their legal name or just random stuff that they have done.
  • @dennyandlee.  YES!   I hate when people do that.  We have friends who just named their daughter Elliot and call her Ellie, which isn't the absolute worst.  But things like "my sons name is Michael but we call him JT" or something similarly unrelated.

Also, we kind of did the name thing.  <ducks>  I was on board agreeing with you when people give first names they don't intend to use (that aren't Jrs or IIIs or whatever--I get that).  My BIL goes by his middle name and my ILs chose the first name to honor one of their parents.  Why not just make it the middle name?  How much honoring does it get if it's never used anyways?  I don't know.  Not my thing.  For the name crime we committed....  We both love Katie.  And we both love Katelyn (which is what we chose).  But I prefer Caitlin and my husband prefers Katelyn.  We spent a LONG time evaluating names that could shorten to Katie and in the end, I compromised because I plan to call her Kate or Katie regardless.  And if she chooses Katelyn, I'm totally cool with it too.  But all her nursery decor I am making totally says Katie.  :D

No offense if you want to do that it just really bugs me cause I feel like I'm the real Katie lol. Not a fake Katie

Huh.  My name isn't nickname-able so I guess I can't try to understand that.  We chose specifically NOT to name her Katie because we want her to have the choice when she is a professional to use a common nickname or her full name.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but if maternity leave is extended to 18 months I worry what that will do the mommy war culture. It's amazing to have the time off, but I worry that it would create even more pressure around expectations/obligations that are implicit with motherhood (and not, for instance, fatherhood...).

ETA: Not that this matters, but I'm pretty far left on the political spectrum so it's not a tax money thing. Just that mothers I know already face so much pressure during maternity leave and potentially stigmatizes mothers who choose to go back to work early for one of a thousand reasons.

Interesting. I've never thought about that - but I guess I would say that's a problem I'd prefer to have than not have. I know women who don't take the full year off - and I would never think to judge that. I think it's more our responsibility as women (and moms) to stop cutting each other down and start supporting the choices that we make. :-)

I so agree with this 100% -- unfortunately, in practice, this doesn't always seem to be the case. But you're so right that it's better to have options than not to have options. And realistically, judgers are going to judge anyway.

True, and as we all know, those people are mostly just insecure and their judgment is more of a reflection of them and their issues - not the person being attacked :)

It's not really free though.  He's going to pay for it by taxing everyone like crazy.  He wants to make 4 tax brackets, and the lowest tax rate is still higher than every other candidate's (republicans included) highest rate.  He wants to tax millionaires 52%.

But in one way or another, won't what your "getting" in return for your tax money somewhat balance out vs what you wouldn't be paying out of pocket or in copay? (just thinking in terms of health care here). Again, full disclosure - I am VERY limited in my knowledge of how US insurance works....

Yes.  Exactly like this.  Fair warning, I am a fan of Bernie (not everything, but this part for sure).  Everyone yells OMGSH IT'S NOT FREEEEEEE STUPID.  And I'm all, yeah.  I understand how things work in that they need to be paid for.  Thanks for the lesson.  He has proposals to obtain the money largely from businesses.  I don't care enough to argue it out, but yes.  His plan actually reduces out of pocket costs when you subtract out what's being paid for premiums and add in the raised taxes (for the middle class, at least).
