i don't know how much more I can take before switching to formula. I've been supplementing 2-4 oz per day with formula and my baby is now exclusively bottle fed (I pump only). I got really bad advice when I took the little guy home 2 weeks ago that all he needed was colostrum. So we ended up in the hospital for 3 nights with suspected sepsis where they pumped him full of antibiotics and antivirals. I ended up getting mastitis while in the hospital with him, begged for a lactation consultant that never came and ended up seeing an OB for antibiotics. She also said I had been given the wrong size flanges and gave me the correct ones. To make a long story short, I can get my baby to latch and suck, but he doesn't get much and becomes frustrated and now outright rejects breastfeeding, but he'll still cuddle and root. We saw lactation on Monday, but they just shrugged since he's been gaining weight (yeah, I've been feeding him and making sure he's getting the correct amount of milk. But this morning it appears he has thrush, and my boobs still feel like they're being stabbed as usual. My nipples are fine. My husband isn't a big fan of breastfeeding now that we're facing reality. It sounds great on paper, but this is just getting ridiculous to live through.
Re: Mastitis - and now thrush. Only 15 days in.
Did you see an IBCLC on Mon? They are the LC's who are the most highly trained. I'd find one in your area and have them check baby for a tongue or lip tie. That can effect baby's ability to transfer milk from the breast. A baby does just need colostrum until your milk really comes in, but if baby isn't getting it out adequately, then you run into problems.
That aside, it sounds like you may have thrush too, if you have shooting pains in your breasts. It's easy to pass it between baby and you, when bf'ing. The pedi can diagnose it and prescribe oral Nystatin for baby. Then hopefully you can just call your doc/OB and have them prescribe some for your breasts.
