Schneider for a boy?

Thoughts on Schneider for a boy?  I know it's technically a last name but I think it's kinda cool and the meaning works for me because it is a nod to my family's business (tailor/clothing manufacturer).  DH and I want something original/ different but not "youneek," if at all possible, and we also want an S name, to honor a relative.  We would do a more traditional nm along with it.  Like, say, Schneider Michael.... Schneider Joseph.. Schneider Jacob... etc. Do you guys hate it?  What would you think if you met a kid named Schneider?

Re: Schneider for a boy?

  • I'd middle name it. Schneider is honestly a clunky name, and there are a ton of variants  (Snyder, Snider, etc)

Yes, hate it. It's a last name.

Sawyer is a last name that works a better as a first name... And is like "sew-er" for that family business nod. Maybe? I don't know. But no to Schneider as a first name.
  • When you are putting it with middle name combos, I'm mentally putting a comma in between Schneider, Michael... as in last name, comma first name.

The paperwork alone will be an adminstrator's nightmare.

Omg... I didn't read that as "someone who sews" I read it as the plumbing drainage "sewer" BWAHAHAHAHA. Sorry!  :|

ETA I see you already responded to everyone, so you can disregard this. I let it sit for too long without posting. Nice you took everyones comments so well :) Good luck on your search!

Ehh the first thing that popped into my head is Schneider's weiners. Nobody else mentioned it so maybe it's a Canadian company?? It's such a strong association for me. They are the epitome of weiners....haha. you say Schneider, I'll automatically follow with weiner. Probably not what you want...
  • @yellowbean15 I grew up in Canada and I've never heard of Schneider's weiners!  But yes, definitely not a good association lol

I realized that after I posted and then the baby cried, so I couldn't edit it!! Hahaha, oops...

Perhaps you are more health conscious than me and don't eat or have such strong opinions on hot dogs as I do, lol! To me, it equates to naming your kid Oscar Meyer. But now I'm wondering if I'm the only person besides probably Schneiders factory workers who have this strong association. I should probably be more embarrassed about this than I am ;) haha.
  • Im in NY and know of these hot dogs you are not alone @yellowbean15

  • Definitely not. It's a last name and should stay a last name.
  • I would definitely think people were calling him by his last name. Glad you decided to nix it. Sebastian is easily recognized but I've never met one before!
  • I'm also Canadian and wieners were the first thing I thought of too.
  • Canadian here as well and thought of hot dogs, which I'm now craving and will BBQ for dinner tonight!
  • Also a canuck and definitely thought of wieners! Or bologna. Even though I don't eat either.

I'm also in Canada and Schneiders wieners are the first thing that came to mind.
  • I say no, please don't name him this.  Use it as a middle name if you must.
  • First thought was the hot dog, second was Rob Schneider. Either way, that's a definite nooooo
  • I like a lot of last names used as first names, but Schneider just isn't one of them for me. I really dislike how it sounds and it's too much for a first name.

No. I despise hot dogs and I thought of that 2nd. Our vet's last name is Schnieder, so that was my first thought. 3rd was Rob Schnieder.

And, Schnieders makes lots of other meats besides wieners (can't think of them off my head - deli and frozen? But I know they do).
  • Thank you all!  You've convinced me to cross it off the list forever
QFP THIS is the tone in which you respond to people trying to talk you down from your bad name choices.

Op. That was classy. You're going to be a very awesome mum.

I'm a hotdog lovin' canadian who HAS heard of Schneider's. Mostly because I now live in the USA.

But even with all that stacked towards me, nah. Don't name your kid after a heavily processed, phallic-looking food option. Or a last name that can easily be shortened to "Schni". I'm Jewish and lemme tell you now honey. It sounds like a Yiddish insult.
