suggestions for how to drink more water?

I was doing well drinking water for the first few weeks of the pregnancy, but then m/s kicked in.  I started drinking ginger ale, which I could drink all day if I let myself, but I limit it since that would be a lot of sugar calories and carbonation.  I don't know if it's the m/s or now preferring the ginger ale, but I'm really struggling to drink my water now.

Any strategies for how to drink more water?  Or suggestions to make it more appealing even when I'm not feeling great?

Re: suggestions for how to drink more water?

  • With DS my dr told me to drink what I could and not worry about water if I couldn't stomach it. As long as you're getting fluids you're good for now. Once the ms subsided I was able to drink plenty of water.

  • I got a big jug that is supposed to hold your daily 8 glasses in it. I just got in the habit of drinking a sip every few minutes and I usually end up drinking 2 of them a day lol.
  • I keep one of those 20 oz. plastic cups with the straws in them by me full of water at all times. I've been having really bad nausea too, so I just make sure I'm taking little sips throughout the day - definitely no big swigs of water. And what do you know, but the end of the day I've filled it up about 4 times!

I have a big hospital jug too.  I don't know how much it holds but I try to fill it twice a day while at work.  At home I'll have water but I'm so busy with DD I don't really drink that much.

  • You could add a little lemon juice to it.  That always helps me.  I have a 56oz water bottle that I use.  I try to drink 2 a day, but normally only make it through 1 or 1.5.

  • I jave always been so good at drinking all day until I began to have that problem as well. I found it easier to get it down if it was ice cold. I keep a big water bottle with me all day and fill it with ice and water. Good luck!
  • At work, I have a 24 oz straw bottle that I refill 3-4 times.  At home, it's harder, so I drink a lot of sparkling water with lemons.  If m/s is bad, I'll drink half sparkling water/half ginger ale.

  • Just FYI, the amount of fluid you need is still just about 64 ounces a day, and that is from a combo of all liquids, not just water. My OB laughs at all the so called "pregnancy guides" that advocate drinking 100 or more ounces a day. She says that is a big reason why women in the first trimester feel like the have to pee every five minutes, because everyone is telling them to drink their weight in water! Just drink enough that your urine is not super yellow. Don't make yourself sick pounding water. I actually have pretty low blood pressure during pregnancy, so I have to eat a LOT of salt to keep up with drinking even a little more water than I am used to, or else I start to feel faint all the time.
  • Eat popcorn as a snack. It makes you super thirsty, and by the end of the bowl of popcorn you'll be surprised how much water you drank.

  • I have a nalgene and take sips from it all day.  Try lemon or other fruits in there for flavoring? Just chop them up and throw them in.  I would really try to keep up on it.  When I don't drink enough water, my ankles swell already.  And you need it to keep those kidneys clean.  Believe me.  A UTI when pregnant is major misery.  Every doc and midwife I have ever had have said how improtant it is.

  • You could try adding some flavor to the water. They make those water enhancers now from multiple companies. Mio make a "Fit" line that has electrolytes in it. You could try those and see if that helps. I have this at dinner time, just so I am drinking something different.

  • I have a soda stream and so I mostly drink seltzer water.  I can easily drink 3-4 liters a day.  I am not as big a fan of plain tap water.

  • Lemon water!! I throw up if I drink regular water so this is the ONLY way I can drink water!
  • I found over the weekend I was having trouble drinking my water but when I started using a straw it went down much faster. I also agree with adding a little flavor to it.

  • I had one if the big jugs for a days worth a year of two ago, but after 3 months the bottom crapped out out of nowhere and I had a huge puddle in my car. Now I use an app called iDrated and just track. It also has a reminder to tell you when you should drink next. And any water based beverage counts towards hydration. It doesn't have to be water. But I also understand not wanting only sugary carbonated drinks.
  • Another vote for using a straw and drinking it ice cold.

I also drink seltzer a lot too. Water is so boring to me but seltzer is much more exciting Big Smile

I might be close to the 64 ounces, but I rarely finish the 28 oz bottle I take to work in the morning :(  At least I get some liquids at breakfast and dinner.  I probably should add in some for the heat here (I live in the Caribbean) and my daily workout losses though.  At least so far I'm not fainting, even though I am a low blood pressure mama as well!

  • Ive been having the same issue. I discovered Honest kids juice boxes thanks to my friend's4 year old and I love them. Natural, lightly sweet and not a lot of sugar. Those have helped when I just can't get water down.

  • I loooove water, but what helps if I don't feel like drinking much is heating it up and putting a tiny bit of honey and some orange slices in it (and stabbing them with a straw so it tastes like oranges). Freaking delicious.
