@hockeyfan42 My first suggestion is always food! Either a gift card to a restaurant (that delivers or has take out) or freezer meals. I just made my friend a batch of M&M lactation cookies because I know she is trying to breastfeed. (Also, I may have missed a day or two on here... How is your dad doing?)
Food is a good idea! She had GD, so now I'm sure she's excited to splurge a bit.

Thanks for asking! My dad went home yesterday. All tests came back clear, but they think his blood sugar *might* be a bit high. He has an appt with his PCP Monday. Hoping for definitive answers soon!

ETA: @candicek15 lactation cookies are a fantastic idea! I can't believe I didn't think of baking. Do you have that recipe handy? If not, NBD, I can Google!

  • @knottie33447115 my husband worked at Dairy Queen in high school and every time we go to a casino buffet or something where they have self-serve soft serve he insists on making both of our cones. He's weirdly arrogant about his soft serve skills.

I loved when he worked there, though. He used to make me giant dipped cones when we first started dating. I was irrationally sad when he quit and I had to actually pay for my DQ.
  • @Palisson dinner sounds great but sorry about your wake up.  I totally agree- pregnancy with a toddler is a whole other ballgame... one without enough rest!!!  Ever!!!
  • @hockeyfan42  Glad your Dad is home and feeling better. Hope you get some answers soon so it doesn't happen to him again.

(and @Huskerfanz if you're interested!) These are the cookies I made: https://steel-cut-oats.com/2015/06/15/mm-lactation-cookies/

They were very easy to make, just hard to mix by the end because the batter is thick, but it makes a TON of cookies. I kept some out and vacuum sealed the rest in smaller batches so she can freeze them and take them out a bunch at a time. I also had to cook them a bit longer than the 15 minutes to get them to brown on the bottom a bit, but that might just be my oven.
  • Knottie33447115- I just got some jeans and a sweater from PinkBlush and they were pretty true to size.. I had a hard time keeping the jeans up but I think once my tummy gets bigger they will stay on much better :)
  • SMLmom thank you. Isn't it amazing how exhausted you are capable of getting these days? I mean, I have had a rich life- full of academic achievements, sexual adventures and career successes- many of those events pulling all nighters and running myself ragged. But I have never ever been this wiped out.

Also- until my mid 30's I did everything on as few calories as possible, and often with at least a tiny bit of alcohol involved- now I eat calories non-stop and rarely get a hard drink but I can't get anything accomplished.

I recently read something about a really ground-breaking doctor and now I'm thinking I deserve special treatment from a
Dr who is a great Dr who cares about mine anddd babys health and don't want me to have to go thru days of fatigue! now dontcha wish you had a Dr like that?

  • You're all too fast for me! Too much to catch up on. But co-signing the water/heartburn thing. I finally figured out that water and an empty stomach is the trigger for my occasional vomiting episodes now. I can't drink, have ot moderate my coffee and now water is an enemy too? Pregnancy is unfair.

How far along are you? 21+6

Rant/Rave/Symptoms: Rant: Finally getting to the point where sleeping is elusive. I can mostly hold my bladder through the night (so that helps), but I cannot get to sleep. Second rant: I am having such a hard time finding flattering maternity clothes. Between saggy crotch pants and oversized shirts (that don't show off my bump at all, they just make me look super fat), I am demoralized.

What are you doing to prepare for baby? Gestating & working. Momma needs to finish her doctorate... won't happen before baby but really trying to buckle down.

GTKY: What was the first job you ever had? Blockbuster Video. I got 10 free movie rentals a week and really thought I was living the dream!

I completely understand the arrogance...it is earned from the many defeats with how you have to dip those darn cones...nothing worse than having the whole cone fall in when you turn it upside down to dip it...chocolate dip everywhere!!  Absolutely loved the unlimited free ice cream!

Great!  Thanks for the info.  I feel like maternity clothes are so hit and miss size-wise.
  • How far along are you? 25+4

Rant/Rave/Symptoms: super fatigued, craving sugar all the time, and so sick of going to work.

What are you doing to prepare for baby? Yesterday I started cleaning out the nursery. There's still a lot of work to do. But it's getting there! And I put together the cosleeper/bassinet and the bouncer.

    Questions? None at the moment.

GTKY: What was the first job you ever had? I worked at a bagel shop. It was one of the best jobs I've ever had. Everyone was so friendly, the pay was pretty decent (for a 14 year old), and FREE BAGELS at the end of the day.
  • @tjenkins528 I can't believe I didn't know those existed. That will be perfect to go with the cookies. Thank you!

  • How far along are you? 25 weeks, 5 days!

    Rant/Rave/Symptoms:
Rant - Starting to stress over watching the scale go up, since I was technically overweight before I got pregnant. When I got married a little over 2 years ago I was 31lbs lighter! UGH. (Then hip surgery, depression due to deaths in the family, stress because of family issues...it just crept up!)
Rave - I feel my little girl moving SO much, I love it <3
Symptoms - crappy sleep, back pain, even more emotional than I have already been. Oh, some mild heartburn. Gas. Yet, I still LOVE being pregnant so far!

What are you doing to prepare for baby? Finished getting non-baby related stuff out of the "nook"/future nursery (until our house is built), sorted through all the hand-me-downs (for the 2nd time!) to weed out some more clothes since we have a TON. Grateful for all the help though! Making a list of pediatricians to start calling. Oh and I helped my best friend (who's hosting a baby shower) get all the invitations ready to send this weekend.

Questions? Who's thinking of doing a med-free hospital birth?

GTKY: What was the first job you ever had? Besides babysitting, Dunkin Donuts!
  • @kayla2536  I'm hoping to do a med-free birth. I'm terrified of them messing up my epidural and I want to be able to move freely and to whatever position I want. Hopefully birthing classes will help so I can follow through on this.

That's exactly why I don't want an epidural. I don't want to be induced either due to what I've been reading about complications/slowing labor and it resulting in an unnecessary CS. I'm only doing an "express" 1 day class with DH in a couple of weeks (opposite work schedules) but I'm pretty strong-willed and determined (and a tad stubborn too). I'm feeling confident about my decision so far!
  • Ugh, I always feel like I'm late to the party on this thread.  My teaching schedule doesn't allow me to check until my lunch time at 1!  Envious that you ladies get to be on here earlier :)

    How far along are you?

    Rant/Rave/Symptoms:
I decided to start sleeping with my hips on top of a big flat pillow to help with hip pain and so far its helped.  Its so awkward getting in and out of bed in the middle of the night, but these times call for desperate measures. Other than that, doing pretty well.  LO is moving a lot and giving me reminders throughout the day that she's there.  So easy to get caught up teaching and forget (as much as one can forget they are pregnant). It makes me smile throughout my day.

What are you doing to prepare for baby?
I went to a Breastfeeding 101 class last night at my local BRU.  It was ok, but went so fast.  I felt like I left with more questions than answers.

    Questions?
The consultant last night recommended the Spectra line of pumps.  Has anyone used one of them?  She liked them because they are a closed system.  It looks like my insurance might offer the Spectra 9 Plus Advanced with Rechargeable Battery and the Spectra 2 Hospital Strength Pump.  I also can get the Ameda Purely Yours or the Madela PISA.  Anyone have experience with the Spectra ones?

GTKY: What was the first job you ever had?
I babysat for a summer for a couple down the street.  The dad was a farmer and worked out in his fields and the mom worked at a major corporation.  Babysitting for a 2 year old was definitely an eye-opener on diaper changing, feeding, and entertaining a little one.  My first retail type job was working for Reebok Outlet.  Ugh, that was a horrible gig.  My favorite retail type job was working at a coffee shop in college.  What college student doesn't love free coffee?

  • catherinekate Try Ann Taylor Loft for maternity- I have gotten SO MANY great slacks and shorts on supersale! Like $5.99 for a pair of maternity pants that are office appropriate!
  • How far along are you? 23+1

Rant/Rave/Symptoms: One rant I have is my hip...I don't think it's sciatica because it's just my hip, doesn't go down my leg, but if I walk or sit too long it really starts to hurt :disappointed: Other than that, things are going well, so I don't have much else for this.

What are you doing to prepare for baby? I've started buying a few clothes here and there, but nothing major yet.

GTKY: What was the first job you ever had? My first "
official" job was fumigating grain ships when I was 18 or 19.  Yeah.  We would climb down into the holds of those huge cargo ships and put down this tubing then they would load the grain into the holds and we would put these chemical tablets into the tubing and I guess it would off-gas and kill bugs and stuff (that part I didn't do much)

  • @catherinekateHave you checked out Thyme or H&M? My favourite pants are from H&M (though not all stores carry the Mama line). For frumpy tops, I'd suggest going to Thyme and getting one of their little belts and wearing it above the bump. I find that tops with ties or belts like that make the bump way more pronounced and are much cuter.

Raves: I was afraid I wasn't gaining. (I'm not exactly thin, so don't be jelly!) I talked about it to my doctor last night and we looked at my chart and I am gaining. YAY! I'm very relieved.

Question: Maybe a dumb question, but if you don't have an epidural and need a c section... what do they give you for anesthesia? I'm curious bc I've only had VD's.

My first real job was working at a Kay-Bee Toys.

I think they give you either an epidural or spinal block. Not certain, though.

I'm planning on having my second med-free! I'm reading the Bradley book right now (nearest class is 4 hours away :( ), so we shall practice on our own.

If you don't have an epi placed they will either give you an epi or spinal block. If it becomes emergent they will put you completely under general anesthesia as that is quicker.
