Re: The Names You Want Opinions On Thread

  • I need help for a middle name....DH and I are pretty much set on Jolene for a girl, but need help with a middle name. My 6 y/o DD suggested Marie, and I told her that her middle name was already Marie. She said, "Well yeah but yours is too and the baby is coming from your belly....". Good point kid. Would it be weird if both kids had the same middle name? My mom and my SIL also have the same middle name as us, so it's kind of a family thing by now I guess.
My husbands second cousins all have the same middle name (Marie). Shockingly, even ones that married into the family, have the middle name Marie. So to them, they pretty much assume that when you have girls, even if you were to have six girls, they would all have the middle name Marie. There is only one cousin in that family that went against it, and her kids have first and middle names that don't have anything to do with family members. And this is a big family, so there are like 100+ people, and it is like Jessica Marie, Rebecca Marie, Vanessa Marie, Paige Marie, etc.

Also, one of my close friends married into a family where it is tradition to take the husband's first name, and use it for the middle name of any son's that they have. So both of her son's have the same middle name (their father's first name).

So I wouldn't think anything of it.

@MDmomma1217 I think it's fine to do the same middle name, but I personally wouldn't. Do you have any other kids? What's DH's middle name? Does he have a name that has an obvious feminine variation that you could use? That way both girls have a middle name from their parent (Like Phillip --> Phillipa or Michael --> Michaela).
@DobbysSock I don't have any other kids, and this LO will be our last! DH's middle name is Joseph. I like the female version idea, but I guess it would be Josephine? Or Josephina? Not sure if I like how it blends with Jolene. When I was pregnant with DD, I had suggested Christianna as a name (DH's name is Chris) but he didn't like it. Maybe I can circle back to the Christianna idea (or some version of that) for a middle name.
  • @MDmomma1217 Oh I loooove Josephine it's one of my favourites! but I agree Jolene Josephine is really matchy. A version of Chris would be pretty with Jolene, and I think it would be pretty special for each daughter to share a name with one parent. I think it also could be special to all (you and your DD's) share the same middle name, I just have too many names I love which is why I wouldn't do it myself!
  • Looking for opinions. Our DD is named Daphne. We love Delilah is baby #2 is a girl but I can't decide if they're too cutesy together.... here are our top choices, thoughts?

I think Daphne and Delilah would be cute, but I don't think it's too cutsie! My sister and I are Maddie and Morgan

I think Daphne and Delilah are very cute together, and I love both names.

I personally would not have 2+ kids with the same first initial, but I wouldn't side eye it for others unless they're super matchy (like Noah and Nora or Cora and Cory, for example, or a real life example I knew, Chanel and Shishelle, not sure of the spelling)

Of your options, I think Daphne and Naomi are also a good sibset - very similar style of names. I also like Evie as a nickname but would prefer a longer legal name
  • Thanks all! I'm finding the decision much harder the second time around!!

    love Naomi! So underused.
  • I love the unique names, I had one requirement that we stay away from top 15 for the past 5 years. DH actually picked the first name I and got middle. Atm, we're going with Ronan Laurence. Laurence is my gramps first name, my dad's middle and my mom's name is Laurie so the fem version. I tried to kill as many birds with one stone as I could ha. I do know when people find out we're naming him Ronan I'm going to get some side eyes, but don't really care.
    @thebigoaktree
I think Ronan is adorable!

DH and I are juggling a few girls first names. It is either going to be

    Hallie Faye
    Hattie Faye
    or
    Hadley Faye

I am pretty partial to Hattie though

For the boy we have settled on a first name, Camden, but haven't come up with a middle yet. Suggestions?

any family members/heritage you'd want to honor?

In my husband's culture, all the kids get the mom's maiden name as middle names so...I vote for having the same middle if you like it that much. And it's a cute way to let your daughter feel included in the process, and hopefully create that much more of a bond when they get older.

@travelmunkie I too vote for Naomi. If you name her Delilah, I would expect all your kids' names to start with D (assuming you have more)

  • Ok so I think we have a name..
    Kynslee Isabella.

optional spellings for first name were Kynsleigh, Kynslee or Kinsley. No one but me and my mother liked Kynsleigh. And I preferred Kynslee over Kinsley.
  • I am team traditional spelling for ALL names and also meaning is important to us. We have rules out several names due to meaning. Like I loved Claudia, but it means 'lame'. So that was crossed off fast.
I agree with both of your points. For name meanings, if it's just kind of a pointless meaning it wouldn't rule out a name I really loved (for example, my name means "to snare" which I'm neutral about, and wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me) but if it had a negative meaning (for example, Mallory-unfortunate) it would rule it out for me. If it was between two names and one had an awesome meaning and the other was just ok, the awesome meaning would move that name into my #1 spot.

I've only known one Hattie (she'd be a freshman in high school now) and she was the cutest, sweetest kid. Hattie gets my vote! (Not that my vote realllly counts in naming your child, but you know)
  • @blissylissy86 I don't think you can go wrong with any of those names. I think I'd go for
    Cupcake Obama or
    Diamond Obama
  • @Tnallen107 I'm lurking too.. We should start a name board in August.

Anyway, I actually like all of your options. Hadley was on my original list but SO doesn't like it. I would of went with the nickname Haddie.

If you are thinking you want the nickname option Hattie (etc) to be used more frequently than Hadley, I wouldn't even use Hadley then!

  • Well considering I have a uniquely spelled name (and happen to love it that way) and many of my family members have uniquely spelled names as well.. I think I'll go with the unique spelling.

    Kynslee it is.
  • @HMcDade1 Ella Grace is beautiful
  • So I am late to this game, but now that we know it's a girl..our two favorite names are Alexa Janelle and Emmalyn Karen. Middle names are after our moms. Emmalyn is one we saw in a baby book and fell in love with, especially DH. But I'm not sure how to spell it.. we kind of liked the one N as its a nod to his grandmother Carolyn who recently passed away. But I've seen it Emmalynn or Emmalynne too, though I kind of feel like that's getting too long..
  • @schaze I prefer Emmeline. That's the only way I've ever seen that name spelled.

If you spell it Emmeline, it changes the pronounciation to Emma-leen as opposed to Emma-lynn. I would spell it Emmalyn if thats how you want people to say it. Agree the other ways are getting a bit long. Behind the Name offers that spelling as the variant of Emmeline.
  • Thanks @quartz02 and @PinkLady2015! We do want it pronounced Emma-lyn, not Emma-leen, which is why we thought the other spelling works a bit better than Emmeline. At this point we are leaning more towards Alexa, but wanted a good spelling in case we change our minds!

  • Our #1 boys name is Jacob (nn Jake). DH's cousin has the same name and so far, has a little girl (not sure if they are going to have a boy in the future, or if he'll give it a Jr. I wouldn't want him to think we "stole" the name). We aren't very close to DH's extended family and this particular cousin lives in SC and we live in MA so we probably won't see him too often. However, I'm very close with my family and consider it kind of strange to give our baby the same name as another (living) family member. We've given it a ton of thought and have a second choice for a boy's name but we don't like it as much as Jake. Any thoughts?  We're probably going to talk to cousin Jake about this and get his thoughts too, but I think I have to find my own peace with the idea.
