were having an ordeal settling on the spelling of this little ones name. It's not 100% decided but it is on our short list. We are having trouble spelling it either one of two ways: a) Brookelyn b) Brooklyn Personally I'm more prone to the first version with the E in it, esp when it's shortened to just Brooke. But my mom thinks it's weird and so does LO's dad. Pssssh. What do y'all think?
Great advice. Thanks! I will never make the mistake of telling our baby names again. Now that I think of Carrington, I can only think of the negative reaction my mom said. That won't stop me from naming her that if we can't find another name we like better.
@hallgire If you go with Brookelyn she'll have to deal with her name being misspelled for her whole life. I'd go Brooklyn (still nn Brooke if you want) or Brooke Lynn.

I say Brook-kell-lin when its spelled Brookelyn...stick with Brooklyn
We love Carrington but now my mother has expressed her opinion on the name (she doesn't like it) and it is clouding my judgment. We also like Ella Rose, Eleanor nn Ellie, Ally, Camille and Veda. Not really into trendy names. Any other suggestions?
@HCRussell26 Carrington sounds very trendy to me, especially compared to your other choices that seem much more classic. I love Eleanor, Camille, and Veda, although the others are pretty too. Eleanor/Nora/Ellie/Ella are all quite popular right now (if that matters to you - we went with Norah despite the popularity because we loved it enough), but I haven't met any little Camille's or Veda's
@hallgire I say spell it how you want to spell it. People have been spelling my name wrong my entire life and it really has not impacted me in a negative way like most people seem to think it does. It's your baby and if you like Brookelyn then go with it. I think it looks pretty. It almost makes it look more feminine

Nope. Just no. It doesn't look more feminine to spell names or words wrong; it makes the parents look like they either had no idea how to actually spell the name or were just too ignorant to care.
Ok so which name do you like better? These are the top 2 my husband and I agreed on. Wade is a family name and we decided it would be the middle name regardless of boy or girl. Thoughts?
I'm also someone who haa had their name misspelled my entire life and Lately I get stupid unique spellings of it instead of the traditional spelling. I find it really annoying myself

I've had credit and debit cards sent to me with the wrong spelling, even though the names were TYPED into a system by someone I spelled my name to over the phone. U and V are nowhere near each other on a keyboard, mind you, and don't sound alike when spoken in English. My o.b. office had me down as Tavni at my first appointment instead of Tauni, which 100% would have fucked up billing. I'm still 'Tavni' at my vet office and at nearly every hair appointment. Would I have this problem with Tawny? Probably not, because that is everyone's default spelling when I saw 'No, TAW-NEE'. Throw a U and an I in there are you effectively shut down the brain of every customer service rep in a 5 mile radius.
@MrsRo731 first of all, there is no wrong way to spell a name. That is 100% up to the parents.
I, too, have had my first and last (maiden) name spelled wrong my entire life. I'm a perfectly fine human being who is not annoyed by it or suffered emotional damage from it.. It's a part of life. If I type my name into a system and someone else makes the mistake of misspelling it that is 100% their fault and not mine or my parents for spelling my name uniquely.
That being said, my advice to OP was spell your child's name how you want to spell it. It was not my advice to anyone else who decided to comment on my comment. OP said she wanted advice between Brookelyn or Brooklyn and that she prefers Brookelyn. That's perfectly fine for her to choose Brookelyn because it's her child and how she wants to spell it.
A friend of mine is Tawney, add in the "y"! Just to confused people more, have another spelling! This shouldn't be so difficult, why must people screw with spellings?
Try Jamie for instance. Or is it one of these: Jaime, Jaimie, Jami, or Jayme? Or maybe when they read it in an email, they think your name is Jim/James because you're in a male-dominated field. Lol. Names & spellings SUCK!

@ashleighhughes - There's a huge difference between having your name spelled wrong by people and just making up your own spelling of a name. It doesn't look unique to make up your own spelling. Again, you didn't change my mind.
@MrsRo731 again, I wasn't trying to change your mind. As you were not the one asking for advice... My answer to OP was not directed at you in the first place?
And as far as making up her own spelling, let's agree to disagree. I am positive there are many children/women in the world with the name Brookelyn.. She didn't "make up her own spelling"
Brooquelynn, however, I'm sure is a "made up spelling" of the name Brooklyn. Totally different.
There actually IS a wrong spelling. Tavni is 'TaV-nee' not 'Taw-nee'. Or maybe in magical rainbow land V can sound like 'Vee' 'You' or 'Elemenopee', because rainbow-glitter-kittens.
I should totes use this argument on my Masters thesis and see if it flies. 'No, Dr. Price, I don't think I should be docked points for common grammatical mistakes, according to people on The Internet there is no such thing as a wrong spelling'. Think that will work, guys?
@Nerdchild if the correct spelling is Tawnee and someone spelled it Tavnee then yes I would agree that is a wrong spelling lol. But the correct spelling of your name , Tawnee, is not an incorrect spelling as that is what your parents named you. Get where I'm going with this? A parent can name their child any name they want and spell it however they want.
@ashleighhughes Your tone is duly noted. This is obviously a sore spot for you. Maybe you should talk to a professional about your anger and resentment towards others who prefer to spell their children's names correctly.

the e is weird and not correct.

Except my parents went with 'Tauni', which has caused one too many teachers to stare at the attendance sheet in panic and venture '......Tony?', which caused this really funny nickname of 'he/she' to stick for about 8 years. I totally want my kids name to be so confusing it causes her classmates to refer to her as a hermaphrodite, it builds character.
@ButterMyBiscuit anger and resentment huh? Lol no, just general annoyance at the fact that my advice to the ORIGINAL POSTER was soley meant for her and no one else, as she was the one asking for opinions on Brookelyn/Brooklyn. I gave her my opinion and then everyone else seemed to have opinions on my opinion. Unwarranted opinions I might add. But that's the thing about opinions! Just like buttholes- everyone has one.
@ashleighhughes - I have to agree with @ButterMyBiscuit on this one. You're carrying a lot of resentment here.
Also, I'm not saying there aren't any Brookelyns out there; I'm sure there are which is unfortunate. Have you read 'Freakonomics'? Just curious, because there have been extensive studies about how a name starts out popularity within higher socioeconomic groups and then trickles down to the lower socioeconomic groups. That's usually when the 'unique' spellings start to occur. So yeah, I would say it generally gives out a bad vibe to the world when you misspell a name. And yes, it's misspelling it.
@hallgire Brooklyn. I'm pro-"spell your kid's name correctly"... although of all the names to choose in the world I wouldn't choose one of the NY burroughs. (DH is from Brooklyn)
other PPs:
-Carrington is just a big no in my book. You had other lovely options!
-Olivia Wade or Sydney Wade are both nice, I slightly prefer Olivia. Do you have a nickname preference (Liv/Syd) --- does that sway you one way or another?
@ashleighhughes Just because you have a different name spelling and it never bothered you doesn't mean it won't or doesn't bother others. This is kind of like the argument "I never did X and I grew up fine."
That's the beauty of threads like this. You ask for opinions, then you get to see what a majority thinks, which not only tells you what people prefer, but gives you the best possible odds of a name your own kid will enjoy as he/show grows up
And it seems the majority of people here who have uniquely spelled names themselves, as well as the majority of people giving opinions, agree that the common spelling is better. We're giving her a set of opinions she can use to get an outside perspective, which can be helpful when making a choice. No she doesn't have to go with the majority, but hopefully it helps.
Also, you said Brookelyn makes it more feminine, and the majority of us disagree that adding a letter makes a name more ... anything.
Anyways, not sure how my advice to @hallgire started a debate on spellings of names. She prefers Brookelyn and my advice to her was go for it. I think it looks pretty. Again, that was my advice to her, not anyone else. If you want to spell your child's name the traditional way then good for you! Not everyone does. And that's perfectly ok.
