Themes?

Re: Themes?

  • My shower was a really nice brunch with pink patterns for the linens and pink flowers. I don't hate themes but they aren't necessary either. Now, I do hate games, so we just had mimosas and talked instead.

  • I didn't have a theme. Just yellows and greens. My friends hung some baby things on a clothesline across the mantle and used it as part of a game later. They wanted it to feel elegant and didn't want animals or cartoon characters around. (Not there's anything wrong with that!) They had glass plates and flower arrangements.

I went to one shower where the theme was she's about to "pop" and they had specialty popcorns (with pack your own take home bags) and unique pops/sodas.
I saw this idea on pinterest. My SIL & MIL are planning my baby shower and asked me....I'm not big on themes either but if I had to pick the "ready to pop" had some great ideas such as the pop corn favors, soda "pop" I even saw someone had "pop rocks" and lollipops for favors....cheap but cute at the same time!!!

  • Ok, so we may have a theme even though I said there probably wouldn't be one. Still nothing too crazy, but with the dates that are available in May, the shower may fall close to cinco de mayo. Since I'm part Mexican, it also works. So a fiesta baby shower may happen...we'll see!
Haha, that's my birthday and I was thinking of doing our bbq/my birthday in one! Margaritas for everyone (except me, boo).
  • @Nerdchild what a fun idea! Happy early birthday - olé!
  • When is a good time to have a babyshower? I'm due July 5th, my mom originally picked May 28th as the date but we just realize it's memorial weekend. So now she asked me if I would rather have it May 21 or June 11th... What date would you pick? I'm almost thinking the 11th is too late and won't give hubby and I enough time to buy the things we need but didn't get off our registry.
  • @Shelby00519 - DD was due 1/6 so my showers were really early to avoid the holidays. Family shower was last weekend in Oct and friend shower early November. I loved having them early because it gave me time to watch sells and to look for good used deals on whatever I didn't get.
  • @Shelby00519 my mom is throwing mine May 15th. I am due on July 2nd and that gives me a good six weeks to finish setting up and shopping before my due date. I know some people like to have them closer to the end but I was worried about being uncomfortable towards the end and in June it's my mom's birthday, her anniversary, and mine and my husband's anniversary too.
  • I'm due July 9th and mine is on April 24th. My sister and my mom are throwing it. My sister is due with twins on June 17th, so it had to be early to make sure she can be there.
  • My shower was a Little Peanut theme. I have always adored elephants and my son was a preemie aka Peanut or Peanie so it was fitting :)
  • Mine will be June 4th I think. We were tossing May dates around, but couldn't find one where other things weren't going on for family and friends and hubby's job. I'm due July 12th so that leaves about 5 weeks to finish shopping and organize before baby.
  • @Shelby00519 I'm having a dilemma with mine too.. Was first supposed to be 4/17 or 4/24 but now those dates don't work, I guess? So it's either April 3rd which I think is SO early, or June 5th, which I think is too late... I'm due 7/4. And they want me to decide..
  • @rakel88 Mine with my side of the family is April 3rd, too. I thought it was super early, but it's the only time my mom, sisters, and I are all available on the same day.
  • Mine will be on May 22nd and I am due June 30th. I am not excited about being huge and hit then, but it is the only time that works unless we do the first week of April, which I think is too soon for me.
  • I'm stressing being forced to come up with a registry when MIL won't be planning my shower until late May/early June (she's a high school counselor, super busy til then) and I'm a planner who already has a good 80% of everything I could possibly need.

@pandaferh I figured that people mostly want to buy clothes/fun toys and shit off registries, not the practical stuff. One of our showers is in April and one is in May (we're doing one in the north and one in the south), but I'm going ahead and buying the important stuff that I know we'll need. That way if people want to give us gifts it can help us decorate the nursery with art, or built the baby's book collection, etc. Stuff that is nice and that we want, but that isn't critical to the baby's initial few months.

ETA: I also put all the stuff I will buy for myself anyway on the Amazon registry to get the discount. If someone wants to buy me a sitz bath that's awesome, but I'm expecting to buy it myself in June.

  • My step mom is all about the themes, and I don't really care. We ended up getting on a conversation about Disney themes that can be unisex (since she plans way far in advance and we won't know the sex till 2/26) and coming up with Dumbo. She found a place that is already decorated like a circus and provides circus/fair type food. We're doing it 5/21 and I'm due 7/7.
  • My shower was about 7 weeks before EDD and I thought that was pretty good. I wouldn't want to be pushing it up to the last month or so just in case baby comes early. Plus, you want time to get organized.

  • At first I thought this was a thread about nursery themes. Now I'm panicking, because I literally had no idea showers should have themes! Mine will be in mid-May; I'm not due until 7/26 so it's early, but we'll be moving in June so we'd rather have it done before then. My MIL is planning it, and now I feel like I need to spend a couple hours on Pinterest to get theme ideas to send her way!
  • Showers don't have to have a theme, it just seems to be popular right now (I blame Pinterest!) One of my friends is having a Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star themed shower. I think I'm going to let whoever throws my shower deal with what the theme is though if it's my mother it will probably be a book or book-related theme.

  • Showers definitely don't have to have a theme, my mom is just adamant it.

Im due 7-19 and mine is planned for 5-21. I'll be 32 weeks. I'll (hopefully) still be comfortable and it gives my husband and I time to get everything put away and buy whatever we still don't have after the shower. Plus time to relax after.
  • My mom and MIL are planning the shower, and due to scheduling conflicts it will be when I'm 26 weeks. It's a bit early, but we'll definitely have more than enough time after to get everything in order and purchase what we weren't gifted.  The theme is mostly...baby! Cutsey animals, and chocolate bottles as favors. Each table will have a baby book so guests can write a message in it or sign. It'll be a mix of themes, just like our nursery :)

I also have an early shower - I'm traveling to a conference on the East Coast where I'm from, so guess what? Free airfare trumps waiting longer! It feels a little weird but whatever. I'm also having another shower out here in the West, but not until some time in May.

  • I don't think my shower plans have even started yet and I feel embarrassed to ask (don't want to be rude). I know we were thinking of doing it in my parent's backyard so late May, early June when the weather is nice. My work friends are having a shower for me on May 5th (Cinco de Mayo theme??). I wish the shower was earlier because I'm a huge planner, but later works better because of the weather and possibly moving into a new house around that time (crossing my fingers we find something soon!)

  • My showers were when I was between 30 and 34 weeks. DS was due in early April, and I was working in public accounting at the time, so it was a little difficult to plan around my busy season. I was still completely comfortable, so that was not an issue. If traveling, that might have been more of a determining factor, since some doctors recommend no travel after 30 or 32 weeks. Additionally, we had all of the big/necessary stuff, so being too close to the due date was not a concern either. We had the crib and other nursery furniture all set up, plus we had bought our pack-n-play, and I knew my co-workers were purchasing our travel system for us. Since that's pretty much all you need to bring baby home, I didn't stress about it! DH and I were still returning/exchanging baby items after DS had arrived and didn't complete our registry with the discount until afterwards - it's not something you HAVE to do before baby gets here!
  • I threw my SIL a baby shower last summer, she didn't have any requirements besides the fact that she didn't want to play any weird games.  We live in the country and my father has a dairy farm.  My brother really was into the "red tractors" theme for their little boy, so I did a whole red tractor themed shower.  I had cute grey/white/red chevron invites made that I saw on Etsy, along with a cute pendant banner, and cupcake toppers.  The cupcakes were all red, white, grey, colored as well.  I bought a few little red tractors for the tables and sent them home with the kids when we were done. It turned out great and everyone commented how different it was!

  • Lurker from August BMB. I am having a boy and my shower theme is going to be baseball. My invites look like baseball game tickets, we will also be having a wooden bat for guests to sign, along with basic ballpark food and other baseball themed stuff. I'm super excited, baseball is my favorite sport and DH used to play it.
