I know my due date is early in the month so some of us haven't done this yet but I'm a FTM and just got my results back for the 1 hr glucose test. I failed. Should've been less than 135, I was 169. I can't say I'm super surprised (I was never a big sweets girl but chocolate has been my biggest craving) and I'm definitely disappointed. I am DREADING the 3 hr test and the Dr said to do it in the next 2 weeks. Have any STM's gone through this? Advice?

I only have to go two hours without eating before mine. I read that yogurt (probiotics really) have been correlated to reduced GD, maybe try that too before your next test? (If anyone has additional research they've found on this please share!) Not sure if yogurt will help. I think this is a great thread though, as many of us are coming up to the 1hr test. GL!
Tricks for the test? You might get sick. Do your best. I got woosy the first time. The second one I handled fine. To be real TMI, both made me have to run to the bathroom a bit in. I'd ask the tech when you can drink water and how much. I think that really helps.
Good luck!
@MsBeachNJ I had a friend say she had an egg the morning of but I was scared eating would elevate my sugar. So much for my flawed logic!
HBamama2B That's so much better. She convinced me that taking it in the morning was a good idea. I'm a little worried because it feels like with the amount of fasting and the time I took it, my sugar should have been down. I don't have signs of GD, but I'm scared to be diagnosed with it.

I was tested early because of multiple risk factors (being overweight, being over 30, and having a family history of diabetes). I failed the 3 hour (barely) and bawled my eyes out in the doctors office. But I've been able to watch carbs, and be more careful in what I eat, and I'm happy to know I'm working hard to keep me and baby healthy.
Good luck on the 3 hour! Bring a good book or something to do, and maybe you can actually enjoy your time! (And for what it's worth, I had an orange drink and I didn't think it was that bad).
Good luck!!
@tawny87 Good luck! I hope the alternative is a good one!
VikingGirl12 That doesn't sound terrible at all! I'm going to a diagnostic lab so I'm not very optimistic about my circumstances. Is it evil of me to hope there's a friendly preggo there to chat with and keep me company??

I was also told by my doctor that you will either have it or you won't. It won't matter if you are eating lots of chocolate or carbs. Your body is either handling the sugars or it isn't.
I failed both tests and was diagnosed as having gestational diabetes in December. I was in your shoes, trying to figure out what I could do to give myself the best chance of passing the test without actually "cheating" on it. That's because I didn't realize I had ZERO control over whether I'd get gestational diabetes, it's just something that can be caused by the placenta. If you have it, there's nothing you can do to hide it and if you don't have it you should pass without any trouble (although you may fail the first test because they design it to catch more cases due to how dangerous undiagnosed GD can be).
I wrote a very detailed blog entry about my experience with the tests and the follow up visit with the Maternal Fetal Medicine group (https://maybemommy.weebly.com/). I haven't updated it in awhile, but I have been testing my blood sugar four times a day and following the recommended low-carb diet. Luckily, I haven't had to go on any medications and with only one exception where I was testing my carb limits I haven't had a single blood glucose reading outside the recommended range. In fact, today I was given the green light to cut back to testing blood glucose every other day and skipping my next MFM appointment. So while the diagnosis may be scary, it's manageable and it's important to be properly diagnosed if you do have it.
If you have any questions, need some support, or just need someone to vent to about it, please feel free to reach out to me via PM. Being a first time mom who hasn't delivered yet I don't have a lot of pregnancy or parenting wisdom to share, but this is one area I feel I can actually help.

Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!
allowed water in the morning.
I love that to see if you're diabetic they fill you with sugar and expect you to feel well enough to sit around for 3 hours. It's not fun.
I'm in a complaining mood, but it is super important.
Something like 50% of women who have to take the 3 hour due to failing he one hour pass the 3 hour. I actually
have no recollection of the actual statistic and I'm too lazy to look it up but it's a lot. (So much science).

I can definitely empathize with the needle phobia. Just don't look. Focus on something else in the room and concentrate on your breathing. Let the lab technician or nurse know beforehand that you don't do well with needles and they'll take that into consideration when choosing the needle size and who draws the blood. If you get a skilled phlebotomist it's over in just a few seconds. I still don't love the idea of needles and can't watch one being used on someone, but after those tests, the Tdap, and 4x daily blood sugar testing I'm getting used to being a pin cushion. You can do it!

Needle phobia is something I've always struggled with... I think anytime I have to get blood work the whole thing is just so scary. At my first appt to get the most bloodwork done early in my pregnancy, the medical assistant couldn't get my vein. Which was very visible!! She ended up sticking me 5 times in one arm & 4 in the other. It was terrible! That didn't help my fear haha.
