Glucose Test Results

I know my due date is early in the month so some of us haven't done this yet but I'm a FTM and just got my results back for the 1 hr glucose test. I failed. Should've been less than 135, I was 169. I can't say I'm super surprised (I was never a big sweets girl but chocolate has been my biggest craving) and I'm definitely disappointed. I am DREADING the 3 hr test and the Dr said to do it in the next 2 weeks. Have any STM's gone through this? Advice?

Re: Glucose Test Results

  • I haven't done mine yet but I've had 3 girlfriends fail the first one & pass the 3 hour one with flying colors! What did you eat the night before the test/ the morning of? Sometimes that impacts your results!

  • @MsBeachNJ I asked the nurse and she said that I could try and cut carbs but that at this point it's basically however my body is processing the sugar. I had chili for dinner the night before and  think I definitely had dessert but we don't really eat late...so maybe 7pm? The appt was at 9:15 but I didn't get tested until like 9:30am, and I didn't eat anything beforehand. The fact that I basically had gone 14 hours without eating prior to testing is what has me worried.

  • I went through it last time. It's actually very common to fail the first test. I failed mine terribly with DS. They said the results looked like I had just eaten a whole chocolate cake! I passed the 3 Hr with flying colors. you'll obviously have more blood draws and have to drink more of that yucky stuff but honestly, it's not that bad. Take an iPad to watch a movie or a good book. They may even let you leave and come back when it's time for the blood draw so maybe you can run errands in the meantime. Good luck!
  • Interesting, just wondering as My cousin tried to "trick" the test by not eating carbs for 3 days prior, which ended up backfiring because her 1 hour test she scored atrociously! (She passed the 3 hour)... Hopefully you have equally as good results in your longer test!! I heard to eat protein the morning of, so my plan is for eggs, my test isn't till week 28 though and I'm 22 weeks tomorrow.

Ugh! Sorry you have to do the 3 HR! Hope it goes better.

I only have to go two hours without eating before mine. I read that yogurt (probiotics really) have been correlated to reduced GD, maybe try that too before your next test? (If anyone has additional research they've found on this please share!) Not sure if yogurt will help. I think this is a great thread though, as many of us are coming up to the 1hr test. GL!
  • I failed the first one with DS too, but passed the 3 hour. Most of the people I know failed their first time. It seems like a gimmick to me (I know it's not..) but do what PP said and take an iPad or something to pass the time at the doctor. The next drink is the same size, just more sugar but not that bad. I have my 1hr for this round tomorrow and I'm still nervous! I think you'll be fine! Good luck!

  • I've always been told there is no trick.  You are pretty much screwed or not.  I have taken (and failed) two 3 hour tests and one 2 hour test (and a bunch of 1 hours).

Tricks for the test?  You might get sick.  Do your best.  I got woosy the first time.  The second one I handled fine.  To be real TMI, both made me have to run to the bathroom a bit in.  I'd ask the tech when you can drink water and how much.  I think that really helps.

    Good luck!

  • @etr152517 Thank you! That's really reassuring. I;m nervous about not feeling well. The original stuff made me really nauseous and I hope I can keep down this second batch.

@MsBeachNJ I had a friend say she had an egg the morning of but I was scared eating would elevate my sugar. So much for my flawed logic!

HBamama2B That's so much better. She convinced me that taking it in the morning was a good idea. I'm a little worried because it feels like with the amount of fasting and the time I took it, my sugar should have been down. I don't have signs of GD, but I'm scared to be diagnosed with it.

I was really nauseous the first time, I'm nervous about that. Were you ever diagnosed with GD? (I'm sorry if this is too personal, I'm just trying to mentally prepare myself if it comes to that)

Not too personal!  Ask away!  And PM me if you want.  Yes, I had GD with my first, then I was "glucose intolerant" afterward.  Meaning I didn't fail the post partum test, but I also didn't pass it.  I think it's similar to (or the same as) pre-diabetic.

  • I failed the 1 hr with my twins then barfed up the 3 hr drink in the bathroom. Unfortunately it turned out to be a whole day production as my dr had me wait an hour and go have a big breakfast then have my draws done. I ended up passing the 3 hr. This time she is going to give me an alternative test right off the bat and my 24 week appt is today so I will get to find out what that alternative is this afternoon.
  • I had GD with my first after failing the 1 hr and 3 hr. The 3hr test wasn't fun, the drink is even sweeter and they draw blood every hour for 3 hours. The place I went to was disgusting!! They have a new, much nicer location now tho ;). There was another woman there doing the test and we watched movies in our recliners. It wasn't the worst thing that could happen though.
    Good luck!!

  • @MrsAlliKat Oh, I agree. Don't get me wrong...I'm dreading the 3 hour test but I'm also really scared of being diagnosed with GD. My Mother's side of the family doesn't have a history of it, but on my Father's side diabetes is very prevalent (they're all overweight, though, and I've always been small. IDK if that makes a difference or not. I'm sure I'm still at risk regardless) and I'm not as close to them so IDK if any of them had GD. I never thought to ask. I don't know anyone personally who has had it, so it's uncharted territory.

@tawny87 Good luck! I hope the alternative is a good one!

VikingGirl12  That doesn't sound terrible at all! I'm going to a diagnostic lab so I'm not very optimistic about my circumstances. Is it evil of me to hope there's a friendly preggo there to chat with and keep me company??

  • I failed the first one with my second baby. But then the second was fine, but almost passed out in Dairy Queen after lol  So I suggest bringing snacks for right when you are done. :)
  • I'm thinking maybe I had a different test done, because I had to fast the night before. And I haven't heard you guys mention that.
  • @mrsmartinez16 it is a good one! She told me to go have a pancake and potato breakfast before hand.
  • @Incandescent I was told to fast as well. I didn't have to with my last pregnancy (different doctor).

From what I've heard the 3 hour test requires fasting the night before but the 1 hour test you're just supposed to not eat something sugary right before it.
  • Oh good, I was like, why would my doctor do that to me only! Lol
  • I have to go next weekend for the 2 hr test (maybe it's different in Canada) the first time. He's concerned just because I am plus sized so he said we are skipping the 1 hr test.....to be honest I didn't know this was a pass fail thing I thought it was purely for information....oops
  • @Incandescent I was told to fast as well. I didn't have to with my last pregnancy (different doctor).
I was told to eat a regular breakfast without too much sugar the morning before the 1 hour (they always do then at 11 at my office). I couldn't eat after 8pm the day before the 3 hour that was scheduled for 9 and got done at 12:30. Was starving.

3 hour test = awful. I'm dreading this b/c it's a bigger chance I'll have to do it than not. I had to do it last time. I barley passed the 3 hour last time. Bring a book, or a movie.

I love that to see if you're diabetic they fill you with sugar and expect you to feel well enough to sit around for 3 hours. It's not fun.

I'm in a complaining mood, but it is super important.

  • I've fasted before every glucose test I have ever taken--1, 2 and 3 hour.  I think all OBs have their own protocols.

  • I failed the 1 hour and my dr didn't even send me for the 3 hour. I've been monitoring my blood sugar 4x a day for about 3 weeks now. I was terrified at first but it's really not as bad as I was expecting. The diet isn't too bad either, although I really crave sweets so that has been a challenge. I'm glad we caught it early so we can keep it under control. The only thing that truly concerns me is that it raises your risk for pre-e which I am already at an increased risk for since I had it with dd. Good luck on your test, even if you do end up having it , your doctor will make sure it's well controlled! They do have oral medication you can take rather than insulin if you have to start on meds. I had no idea about that until my diabetes consult.
  • Last pregnancy I failed one hour, passed 3 hour and this pregnancy I passed the one hour with an 80. So weird.

Something like 50% of women who have to take the 3 hour due to failing he one hour pass the 3 hour. I actually
have no recollection of the actual statistic and I'm too lazy to look it up but it's a lot. (So much science).

I actually thought it was higher than 50%, like, a lot higher but I could be totally wrong on that.

You're right. I looked it up. 80% who take the three hour actually pass, the remaining 20% are diagnosed with GD.

  • Thank you so much, ladies! My husband and I had started to do a little research last night (like I said, I don't know anyone with GD so this isn't something that I had thought to even consider) and between that and reading your own testimonies I definitely feel better. I agree, if I have it I'd rather just be diagnosed and do what's best to keep her healthy. Hopefully the three hours pass quickly. Good luck to everyone else as they take the glucose test!!!!

  • Has anyone opted out of drinking the drink? I asked my Obgyn if I could just eat something sugary or drink an orange juice & he gave me the okay. Anyone else do that instead of the drink? My test is next month & im so nervous. Mostly because needles make me so sick. The thought of seeing a needle has made me faint.

The issue with doing an alternative is controlling how much glucose is in your blood. The drink they give you at the lab is designed to deliver an exact amount of glucose (50g for the one hour and 100g for the three hour) up front to be measured at specific times. True, you could measure out the amount of orange juice you need to meet that number, but I would rather leave it up to the professionals. I failed by three hour test overall by three points. I'd be pissed if I thought it was because maybe I had a little bit too much orange juice and I'd be tempted to ask to take it again. Honestly, people talked about how terrible everything about the three hour test would be and I thought it wasn't bad at all. I had the orange flavored drink and it was chilled. I expected it to be horrible, but it wasn't. Obviously flavor is subjective, but I think as long as you don't psych yourself out you'll survive.

I can definitely empathize with the needle phobia. Just don't look. Focus on something else in the room and concentrate on your breathing. Let the lab technician or nurse know beforehand that you don't do well with needles and they'll take that into consideration when choosing the needle size and who draws the blood. If you get a skilled phlebotomist it's over in just a few seconds. I still don't love the idea of needles and can't watch one being used on someone, but after those tests, the Tdap, and 4x daily blood sugar testing I'm getting used to being a pin cushion. You can do it!
    Thank you for the input.

Needle phobia is something I've always struggled with... I think anytime I have to get blood work the whole thing is just so scary. At my first appt to get the most bloodwork done early in my pregnancy, the medical assistant couldn't get my vein. Which was very visible!! She ended up sticking me 5 times in one arm & 4 in the other. It was terrible! That didn't help my fear haha.
  • What are the options of flavors? Lol. I have my test in 2 weeks and I don't do well with weird sugary flavors. I had to drink the contrast liquid a few years ago for appendicitis and a puked it all back up before they could do the test.

I know there are a few, but my office didn't give me a choice. They just handed me my drink. Luckily it was cold...I hear they aren't too good not cold. It really wasn't that bad, I kind of enjoyed it.
