@aluicious Does he still feed at night? Can you find a daycare solution that will be okay with him just having purees? My LO is 8 months tomorrow. He takes 2-6 ounces of milk when I am at work and often doesn't drink any for 6-10 hours. Nurses plenty at night and is super healthy. Just reverse cycling. He definitely won't take a bottle if I'm around but he does if I'm gone and he's hungry enough. It works well for us. If we are separated for more than a day he seems to take a bottle no problem, we've tried this twice and those two days he guzzled milk bottles with me out of the picture. I suspect your LO will figure it out after a few days of daycare if daycare is willing to give him the time. He'll either start to take a bottle or establish the reverse cycling.
I ask because you are focused on the specific nutrition content of specifically organic eggs, @wheresilenceismusic . I don't really know you or your efforts as a mother, so that's why I was asking a question to try to understand your angle. I'm also trying to reconcile the specific focus on organic and nutrition content with the idea that it's a pain to feed your kid. It's a confusing mix to me, so one way my brain is trying to resolve that seemingly disparate information is by categorizing your profession or approach. A busy, working-mom nutritionist is one answer that came to mind.
Did you edit your post? You seem to have really rubbed people the wrong way here.
No, I'm not a nutritionist, to answer your other question. That's why I don't get preachy about food - especially on a forum that's not even the age group of my child.
Good luck with the carrot allergy and organic eggs and breastmilk. I hope food gets easier for you for your baby.
@aluicious - when I was overseas I used a hand pump that worked well (due to voltage issue - but I didn't pump much). Could that be a temporary solution?
I haven't had the bottle rejection issue, but my kid enjoys taking breast milk from a sippy cup. Any chance that could work?
@henrytviii has a baby who has reverse cycled - I think he nurses at night primarily since he won't take much during the day. Maybe your baby will do that, too?
Moving is stressful and so is new work, baby in day care, etc. Good luck, I hope you guys hit your stride soon!
@henrytviii The reverse cycling is a creative solution for sure, and I'm glad it works for your LO! My LO is STTN, and I sure like my sleep (I'm pretty emotional the next day if I don't get enough sleep) so I don't think I can bring myself to change that. If I can't get him to at least show some interest in taking the bottle this week, I'll need to talk with the daycare about options and how they can help. The unfortunate thing is they haven't seemed too willing to work with him, yet. We were military, so this daycare is on post, and because I'm only doing hourly care right now due to not having a job yet (they only offer full time to dual working families) I think they don't see the urgency of getting him to take one since I don't really "need" the care and can come pick him up whenever. We are living in Germany, and as much as I would like to go find another daycare (one that's certainly closer!), I'm worried the language and possible cultural barrier and Euro pricing would be a problem.
@virginiaunicorn11 I did not think about a manual pump! I'll look into that. Knowing my luck, after I get one my pump will come in the mail lol We did buy sippies, and I'm going to try it today, but the daycare said they aren't allowed to give sippie to children under 1 Not sure why, and I wonder if he takes the sippie if I can get a note from his pediatrician to say he has to have it. Hopefully LO likes these sippies and I don't have to buy a bajillion different kinds to figure out what he wants, like I did with bottles!!
@aluicious also get a sippy cup where you can take out the spill proof seal thing. My lo is 7 months and hasn't taken a bottle yet except for maybe 2 times when we were trying it when she was 1 month old. What we have found recently is that if we take the spill proof thing out and tip the cup up so it just spills out then she wil drink it and she's been sucking on the spout too. Next step is to fill the cup up with breastmilk and put the spill proof thing back in and see if she can drink it that way.
@caitlincunn thank you! I didn't realize you could do that with sippies. I don't see how I could with the brand I bought (of course), but could you recommend yours?
@aluicious the one I have been using is my other daughters from when she had a sippy cup, which thinking of it now I probably should get her own. I had gotten it at babies r us. It has her name on it. Not sure if they have them anymore, but it's small maybe 5oz green hard plastic cup with a hard spout.
I found this one that says it has a removable spout so that's what you want to look for.
Any similac moms see the stage 2 advanced for 6-12months? I haven't seen it in Walmart or target but it's online and says its for when you start solids. Need to get a call in to pedi about it, but was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this kind?
@aluicious when I lived in Germany, there were Expat parent Facebook groups for most cities. If you join your local one, you can ask about affordable childcare options, and will get great advice from people familiar with the local situation. I also was able to borrow a lot of great baby gear that way. I felt like those women were my guardian angels, with the way they came through for me on so many things and great advice.
You might know about the website Toytown.com already, but you could also look there for affordable childcare alternatives. It's an English-speaking expats in Germany page.

My MIL sent us two of the really big tins of this for Xmas (sounds weird, I know, but she asked what could help us and we told her formula and diapers, so that's what she got). I still have maybe 5 or 6 of the plastic tubs (the $25 ones) of the stage one formula (I really stocked up) so I haven't started using hers yet. But my DH and I did compare the ingredients (same, I think) and nutrition information. Its been a month so I don't remember for sure, but I feel like they are pretty much similar except the stage 2 has more of some nutritional stuff (vitamins or minerals, whatever) in it.
I have seen it at Walmart or Target tho. It looks pretty much just like the stage one, so your eye may be just sliding over when you're looking. I live in a pretty small town, so if I've seen it at one of those places, you should be able to find it on a shelf somewhere.
Share what your pedi says about it, if you don't mind, ok? At the rate I'm going, I'll be done with my stage 1 formula in a month or so. (Of course I'll ask my pedi, too, but its nice to compare)

See what your pedi says about it, mine said it was a ploy to spend more money on formula lol. So we've stuck with the same sim-sensitive .
@beckyk9109 So I checked the labels on the stage 1 and stage 2 similac advanced (the regular plain formula). The stage 2 has more protein, vitamin C, calcium, and phosphorus. Other than that they appear nutritionally the same. Still 100 calories per 5.4oz. I didn't check the ingredients because... There's lots of them.
I'm not sure why they would need more of those 4 items when starting solids. I have an appt next week and I'll ask about difference.
Here's pics of the two labels, stage 1 first then stage 2.
@mellymar keep us posted what the dr. Says. I've been curious about the stage 2 as well. But haven't wanted to switch because we just started formula a couple of weeks ago and didn't want to rock the boat too much.
@mellymar we have an appt next week too and I intend to ask there. I just find it weird stage 1 is 0-12month and stage 2 is 6-12month. My parents found it and asked, otherwise I wouldn't know any different. I'll be curious to see what different pedis say!
I researched formulas the other night at work because on the enfamil can I was sent it says "newborn" like we have at the hospital. So I was figuring I can't use it since my child is not a "newborn"
I looked up nutritional content of similac advance and enfamil "newborn" and the only difference is enfamil has higher levels of DHA and AHA otherwise they are exact same calorie wise etc........ So the "newborn" only part must be a ploy for ppl to move up to the next enfamil formula.
@mommaswizz@klkonwi my pedi said the same thing when I asked about supplementing if I needed to. She said its all the same and that Kirkland (Costco) brand is the same as one of the major ones, just with the label changed. As if formula isn't expensive enough.
We switched from Gerber Soothe to Target generic gentle with no problems. It's $10 cheaper for the 22 oz container. I've thought about Kirkland, but I don't want to switch again right away, especially since we've had no problems. But formula IS really expensive.
@virginiaunicorn11 I have found so many Facebook groups for where we are, and they are so helpful. I hadn't heard of toytown.com, so I'll check it out thank you!
For all the fuss we went through the first 2 months, LO seems totally fine. We're going to stick with the gentle formula just because I don't want to press our luck.
@beckyk9109@hudson202 and anyone else interested in the 6-12m formula vs regular formula. My pedi's office said the same as @klkonwi - its basically a ploy by the formula companies. They may add a little more of some vitamin or whatever to make it slightly different but he thought it was generally pointless to switch away from the regular (birth to 12m) formula
Tested peanut butter this weekend and i think we're clear! She LOVES it. it is normally a complete battle to get LO to eat her oatmeal, to the point where i was making it like 80% fruit with 20% oatmeal and she would STILL only take a few bites (same story with her rice cereal at daycare)...this weekend i mixed a oatmeal with breastmilk like normal and then stirred in MAYBE 1/4 teaspoon of peanut butter...and suddenly she wanted to eat every last bite. this morning i also added some bananas to trick her into eating some fruit, and DH said she ate almost all of it again. Victory is mine! (hopefully she doesn't have some kind of delayed reaction now, that would be a huge bummer).
Going to test out plain whole milk yogurt this weekend. And then eggs the following weekend. Hopefully she'll be better at chewing and swallowing by the time we get to eggs. My mom was in town last weekend and made a batch of meatballs, so we broke one up and gave it to LO for dinner last night. She got it in her mouth just fine, and seemed to LOVE the taste, but couildn't figure out how to swallow it, so she would get mad when she inadvertantly spit it out. ha.
Our ped said everything but honey and cows milk so that's what we go for does anyone else just wing it when it comes to how much you feed your LO because that's me like we tried eggs the other day and he liked them but I didn't feel like he ate very many so I gave him some apples after?

I give LO food until he throws it on the floor repeatedly, acts disinterested, or is fussy in the high chair. I don't really worry about the amount. I do give him some variety in case he doesn't want one thing.
My LO likes his purees close to watery (i make his food). I tried making them more dense, but he just gags. I'm afraid he might have a delay in learning how to swallow food. He also hates fruits!
We still have LO on size 2 bottle nipples... Can't seem to get her onto the next size without lots of choking on the formula. Any tips or tricks you all have?
Size 2 nipples here as well. My theory is that unless they're smacking it and frantically trying to get more milk then they're good on the size2. I'm holding off switching until as late as possible. Twins=so.many.bottles making it pretty pricey to switch
LO had a hard time keeping up each time we switched nipples. It took about a week before she got her groove back. I would take the bottle out of her mouth a lot during a feeding to give her a chance to slow down and swallow. I did this when she started sucking too hard and would drown herself. I switched up b/c feedings were taking too long (for both of us) and she was sucking so hard her jaw would get sore.
