Trying to Get Pregnant

  • @MissAmeliaPond Congratulations on the new job, but that is a tough one!  Do you know your new employer's maternity leave situation?  Whether they do only FMLA leave or if they offer anything else as well?  For me, if my employer would give me actual paid maternity leave if I'd been there a year, I'd probably TTA a few months to get that.  But if you're dealing with FMLA anyway, which is just unpaid leave, I'd just budget to figure out whether I could afford whatever the unpaid portion was before making the decision.  If they really want to hire you, and you work really hard before you go on leave, they probably will be willing to hold your position for you for 12 weeks, whether you qualify for FMLA or not (and if you haven't signed a contract yet, I would suggest negotiating a guaranteed 12 week unpaid leave into it before you do so, just to be safe).

I will offer, having had a baby 7 months ago and taken a 12 week leave (6 weeks at 100% pay, 6 weeks at 0% pay), while I was looking forward to going back to work at the 12 week mark (I had zero intention of being a SAHM), I was also so worried about how daycare would handle LO.  Fortunately, she came out of her Crazy Screamy Time around 13 weeks, and started sleeping through the night then too, so it wound up being ok.  but if my job was like "we'll only hold your position for 6 weeks and then you have to come back because you don't qualify for FMLA protection," I probably would have quit my job (I am lucky enough that we could live off of DH's salary alone if we wanted to) and found a new one when I was ready to go back to work.  There is no way I would have felt ready to go back before 10-12 weeks.  I mean I was getting maybe 5 hours of broken sleep a night at that point, and I would have had a nervous breakdown bringing my kid to daycare that early, knowing she'd just be crying for 8 hours a day.  That's not to say it would be impossible - I mean people have to do that all the time because of the terrible parental leave policies in this country - but if I had the option (as you do now, since you are not pregnant yet), I would not go back that early.

Obviously this is a completely personal decision that no one else can make for you, and it could take you 6 months to get pregnant anyway, which would make this a non-issue. But I'm a planner and would want to make sure I had my ducks in a row if at all possible.  On that note - if the Short Term Disability policy at your new employer is optional, sign up (as that's often what will get you some money during at least the first 6-8 weeks of your leave - though some policies require a year of tenure before kicking in that benefit as well...and some won't cover "pre-existing conditions" if you are already pregnant when you sign up for it).  Basically, do your research on the various benefits, ASAP. :-)

Anyhow if this happens it will actually allow me to O without SO knowing about it which will help his performance anxiety around O day massively!! FX!!!

It's just me and my sister. My sister is my best friend. She lives in San Diego and I live near DC so we don't get to see each other often anymore.
My parents got divorced when I was 18 though and so now I also have a step-brother. He's a year older than me.

  • @schwee25  As others have said, temps will typically be pretty rocky for a bit in the beginning of a cycle, I know TCOYF talks about that as well.  Since it's your first cycle temping, you could also be getting yourself worked up about looking at your temps, I know I did, and who knows how much that screws with them!  Just keep going and over time the chart will hopefully form a pretty picture.

@MissAmeliaPond  Sorry about CD1, but yay for the job!  Hope you can find peace in making a decision about TTA or not.  Could always just NTNP and if it happens of course you will be happy but if not, at least you may not have as much stress as actively TTC.

WAYDTGKU: Vitamins, Temps, CP/CM, everything else

R/R/CS: Hello ladies! Newbie here. So far things feel like they are going OK. DH gets home this Thursday for the weekend. We have a strange living situation bc we are in the middle of moving across the country. He got promoted and left at the beginning of January while I stayed behind to transition my work, etc. I haven't seen him for 5 weeks! It was nice in a way bc I was able to observe my body without obsessing about a BFP, but it didn't stop me from obsessing about everything else. Ha! Still in a place where I just don't know if I'm 'Normal' or not. My temps looked good last month but this month they have been 97.1 or 97.4 every other day. I guess since it's been so consistent, it shouldn't be a problem, and I haven't O'd yet. Hoping that DH homecoming and O'ing will time perfectly but not expecting anything from it. We will start seriously trying next month when we are together again. I would appreciate anyone's insight if you'd like to see my charts!

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)? I'm the oldest in our family (1 younger sister). Ironically enough, DH is the oldest in his family, and we are both the only oldest siblings. Meaning both of my parents are the youngest in their families and same for DH. Stuff like that is really interesting to me.
  • @itsmehere1212 I can't imagine what you must be going through.  Be good to yourself today.  (((Hugs)))

R/R/CS:  Well, today is officially my worst TTC day in 10 months. Its CD1, and we got H's SA results back. No bueno. 28% motility, 0% morph. I'm stunned. I know you can't tell these things at all, but my H is perfect. Healthy, gorgeous, strong, no issues whatsoever. Best guy in the world. This has completely devastated both of us. He has to go back for a repeat test, but hope isn't really where I am at now. I know we are looking at IVF, and it is just so unexpected it seems laughable. I'm 28 and hes 29.  We make decent money, but with law school loans we haven't even been able to buy a house yet. We were hoping that would come a few years after baby, and now we are facing IVF and who knows how much money. My head is reeling, and I'm thinking of just going home from work to cry in peace. Thank god today for having my own office.

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)?  I'm the middle between an older brother and younger sister. All 4 years apart.

(Warning: grouchiness ahead. I have enough of a cold that I feel really crappy right now.)

Also, I literally just sat down to start working and my MIL called and wants to rant. Very frustrating. She's on yet another diet for this cruise she's going on and says she didn't eat yesterday and she's not eating for the next three days. Right. Because this is really going to contribute to lasting scale success, and also why does it even matter?!?!?!?! And now she's getting in on my writing business, worrying that I'm not going to reach out to agents now that I've finished my book, and when I tell her that I already have reached out to an agent, she's like, "Ooh! Is it a girl or a boy?" and I say, "It's a man." and she says, "We're getting a boy!" I just...I just can't stand the way she talks about my business like she's in on it. I'm super glad she supports me, but something just rubs me the wrong way when she tries to get in any further than that. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh.

Also, my husband asked for some Bible commentaries for his birthday and she bought him the whole freaking set. That is all.

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)? I have an older sister. She's the best, but sometimes I worry about her.

R/R/CS:  So ends my first month TTC.  If anything, this forum has given me realistic expectations of TTC so I don't feel surprised that I didn't get KU last cycle, but I'm still disappointed of course.  However, my DH was sweet yesterday when AF came and when I asked if he wanted to try again this month he said yes (he was having some doubts about trying again).  So I'm still feeling pretty optimistic and all things considered I'm in a pretty good mood.  I will take advantage of being able to drink freely for the next couple weeks, the sun is shining today, and I have a hot cup of coffee next to me.

GTKY:  I have a sister that's 10 years older than me.  We weren't super close growing up because of the age difference, but now that we're adults we're very close and I love it.

R/R/CS: Well, on to cycle 10 :( trying to remain optimistic today. I got my AMH blood results back and they are excellent (ovarian reserve), so that was encouraging, and I have my hysteroscopy scheduled for next week, so maybe we'll have some answers then. DH is starting to get concerned that his DNA fragmentation results are the cause of our lack of pregnancy at this point; he's trying to get more info from his doctor on that. I tried to reassure him that we are a team, and it's doesn't matter who has the less than ideal numbers. I hope he doesn't get to discouraged if we end up with a MFI diagnosis after all my testing is done.

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)? I am one of four and I have three brothers.  One of them is older and two are younger, so I am in the middle(ish?).  Also My DH is one of four as well and he has a younger sister and two brothers which is a weird coincidence.  We don't get to see his family that much cause of where we live, but we are close with my brothers (one of them actually introduced us).  My older brother is married and my younger two both have fairly serious girlfriends, so just one sister in law so far.

My thought was, since it hasn't been easy going thus far for me, that I would always be wondering "what if", what if I don't get pregnant for a long time and one of those months would have been my month, etc. It wasn't worth it to me to TTA. Not that how I felt about my situation has any bearing on what you should do. Really just saying that I understand where you are coming from :). Good luck!

R/R/CS:  was up all night last night getting sick.  Feeling like I may be on the other side of it.  Guessing my toddler brought something home he didn't get, but I did.

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)?  I'm the baby, I have 2 big brothers - one 4 years older, one 8 years older.

  • @itsmehere1212 I'm so sorry. Sending you all the hugs!

Sorry about CD1 @MissAmeliaPond and @ReesaAnne16! But, congrats on the new job @MissAmeliaPond ! That's really awesome, and I'm sure you will figure out what the best strategy is for you.

    Month/cycle: 3/3

    CD: 10

    WAYDTGKU: sex and vitamins

R/R/CS: I'm OK. Excited about upcoming FW - we are going away for the weekend, and my estimated O is on Sunday i.e. Valentine's Day - I have a good feeling about this :)
Here's a question: regarding coffee consumption, do you guys follow the same rules as for EtOH i.e. "drink 'til it's pink", or do you (try to?) limit intake compared to pre-TTC? Just curious what people do. I personally get very cranky without coffee, and medical literature says 1 cup daily is OK in pregnancy... I'm currently drinking 2 a day, but thinking about cutting it down.

GTKY: Do you have brothers/sisters? Where do you fit in (oldest, middle, etc.)? I'm an only child... but I have lots of cousins that I'm close with, and also 2 wonderful SILs

  • @mj8215  I don't drink coffee because I think it's gross, but I've read that drinking a lot of coffee can affect fertility. I haven't looked too much into it and someone else will probably be able to give you more information, but 2 cups a day seems fine (I assume you mean 2 mug-sized cups, not 2 super grande or whatever the largest size Starbucks has is called)
  • @rosenyc123   Hey cycle buddy, don't get too discouraged about the SA results. Sometimes it is just a bad sample, your doctor should definitely be recommending a recheck. How were the numbers overall?
DH's SA results were kind of poor in Dec (37% motility, 2% morphology). Our doctor said it's uncertain how much morphology plays a role in infertility. I started DH on some supplements (I can pm you the list if you want) and a healthier diet, and he had a recheck SA about a month later. It was too soon for the supplements to be helping, so I think it was just a better sample over all, but all of his numbers were improved (by a lot) and normal.
Don't lose hope, and definitely have another sample done :)

  • @delujm0 Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful advice. It sounds like I definitely need to wait until I can get in and look through the handbook at their maternity policy. I'm going to be an at will employee, so no employment contract for me. We have state SDI where I live, so a lot of employers rely on that to supplement pay while on leave (and don't pay anything themselves or offer private SDI) - I'm not sure if the company offers anything extra, but definitely worth finding out!

@Sparty18 Thank you! I told DH that we could try NTNP  this month and he told me I'm too Type A for that to work. I think he's right because I'm going to keep charting...

@JamieMichelle12  That's what's been bothering me, too. I'm going into month 6 of TTC, and I feel like giving up any cycle at all could potentially be the wrong cycle to give up! *TW loss* Someone posted an article on here recently that had some statistics about trying during the first three months after a loss vs waiting until 3+ months after the loss, and the difference of live births by percentage was staggeringly in favor of not waiting. I'm going into my second cycle after my CP, so I'm afraid if I put off trying, I'll miss out on the all the sticky fertile magic. I know that's silly, but the study was pretty compelling.

In other news AF is screwing around with spotting, and it looks like REAL CD1 will be tomorrow... and my LP is going to be longer than usual? This whole cycle has been wonk-tastic.

  • @mj8215 I cut out coffee all together when we started TTC cause plenty of articles seemed to indicate high amounts of caffeine can interfereasily with conception.  I would rather be safe then sorry in that regard.  However most of what I read did indicate one to two cups of coffee a day was probably not all that hurtful but I have impulse control issues so for me it was easier to just cut it all out.

  • @ReesaAnne16   Thanks so much, cycle buddy. His count was good, but his motility was only 28% and morphology was 0. I know second tests can be better, but zero is pretty tough to deal with. I think I am going to start him on supplements even though the nurse said they typically don't recommend them. I feel like it can't hurt, so whatever. Send your list on over if you want! I am wondering when to schedule the second test. The clinic said as early as two weeks after the first, but I am considering having him wait a full three months so we don't feel like we can't trust the second sample.
  • @rosenyc123 My hubby had low motility on his first SA so I got him to take "Fertility Blend for Men" from GNC. When he went back for another SA about 3 months later, his motility had improved. I don't remember the actual numbers. I've heard that women shouldn't take supplements, but I've never heard anything about men. Just wanted to share our experience. Hope everything works out for you.
