What is it with men and stripper names? My husband and his brother insist my middle name (Hope) is a stripper name, no matter how much I argue that no-one was thinking of that at the time (it's a looong story as to why that I my middle name the short one is ( I'm adopted, the name was my birthmother's wish, mom and dad only did it b/c they knew her) but every time it comes up, that's my stripper name *shakes my head*
O.O crap, I just realized that while I don't have to worry about DH joking about giving a future daughter a stripper, I may have to worry about his brother....at least about him saying any names we pick are stripper like.....gah!

  • I need honest opinions on this name.

Canderous Willliam.  Middle name is my grandpas and as a nick name we would call him Cander.

my husband came up with this and at first I wasn't that into it but to be honest it's starting to grow on me, but I feel like it's a little too different.  On the other hand it's nice because it's different and there won't be a million Cander's around.

I like it because it's strong, but I'm still on the fence. Does it sound odd?
  • Thank you for your honest opinions.  I do agree with you guys and I knew there was something that wasn't sitting right! haha
I think we will still keep Cander on our maybe list but keep it shorter like you suggested @rakel88.

I also like Finn and so does my husband but we are afraid it will be extremely popular this year due to the new Star wars movie.  :(  So that one is out unfortunately.

    Anyway thanks for the advice.
  • DH is completely stuck on names for both a boy or girl, and I just can't decide if I am on board.  He has said no to every other name I suggested.

Our DD is Madelyn Sue (nn Maddy),  or DS is Owen Christopher (middles names have all been family names so far).

DH wants Zander (spelled that way) for a boy, middle name probably James after my uncle.
For a girl he wants Emelia (spelled that way), with middle name Irene (after my grandmother).

So Zander James L or Emelia Irene L.

    Thoughts?

I think Emilia is the Spanish version of Emily... so I personally would spell it with an i in the middle but it's very pretty either way and I love honoring someone for a middle name.

Zander is not really my style and I'm not sure how it goes with Madelyn and Owen (Zander seems trendy to me and Madelyn and Owen have a more mature, traditional feel to me). I love the name James though...

    What are your favorites??

I hear Candor.... which means truthfulness and honesty so it's a great association, but just wanted to through that out there....
  • DH is obsessed with the name Nyx (we're having a girl). We spent a few days at Mardis Gras last week and one of the parade themes was Nyx, which he took as a sign. I think it's a cool name but I will always think of 'nix' as in, 'get rid of'. Thoughts?

That's my first thought too. But maybe try calling the baby that for a week and see how it feels?

Nyx is the goddess of the night, which is why the krewe took the name (they are a night parade!) In Greek mythology, Nyx was seen as "a veil of dark veil of mist drawn forth from the underworld which blotted out the light of Aither." I do hear "nix" when I hear the name although because I live in NOLA, I'll never hear that name and not think of the krewe and the parade (not that it's a bad thing). Anyway, just some food for thought :)

  • I love this thread! I am so stuck on a girls name, I don't like very common names and was hoping or something with a K because I have a daughter McKenna whom we call Kenna and a son, Kohen. Any ideas on what would sound good with those? TIA!!

I love the name Caterina - and you can spell it with a K, Katerina. It was one of my girl choices, but my husband wanted a different one so we compromised on that.

I like a few K names for girls. My daughter has a K name. One I think is really cute is Kiska. I think it's Russian but it's not common.

edited because my reading comprehension is apparently terrible. I wasn't trying to be an asshole.

If we have a boy we are naming him Nixon. Naturally, "Nix" will be a nn that comes out of it but idgaf. I feel like you can turn most names into something with negative connotation and on the relative scheme of things, this one isn't that bad. Look at "Ashley". Most people nn to "Ash". Not bad until you really dissect it and then it's just gross you're calling your kid cigarette dirt.
  • Thanks for your input but what I meant was that I already have a Kohen,  he's almost 5 and no controversy yet!

I don't think of the parade because I have never heard of it (nor am I anywhere close to it). So the first thing that I thought of, was someone trying to be creative with the word "Nix", like trying to be trendy. Seeing that is the name of a goddess doesn't change my mind though. My sister's dog is named Isis after the goddess. You can imagine how many times someone asks her dog's name and she has to start off with "Well, her name is Isis, and she was named after the goddess....blah, blah, blah." Each time she would just answer with "Isis", she got weird looks, people would start to act awkward, or they would make some sly negative comment about the name. After a year of dealing with it, they now call the dog Icy or Ice (she will respond to both).

Thanks! Yes, since the Nyx parade is one of two that we attended, he got very excited with all of the 'Nyx Turns Five' stuff and of course is planning on saving all of it until her fifth birthday. I think I will suggest we name her Druid since that was the other parade we went to! In all reality, I don't think he's holding out much hope that I'll agree. Just wanted to check in with all of you to make sure that my aversion is reasonable!
  • Id just think someone was a really big Knicks fan... Although I will add that Lux is a guilty pleasure name of mine and is got a similar vibe to it
  • What about
    Alexa nn Lexi or Lex
Nicole or Nicola and you could maybe use Nyx as a nn
    Beatrix nn Trix
    Maxine nn Max
  • Bump

I knew someone who went by Zander as a nickname; full name being Alexander.

I really like Emelia. That name's on our list, but spelled as Emilia

  • What are your takes on finding a name with a nice meaning behind it? And if you come across a name in which you like but are not too fond of its meaning, do you scrap the name and come up with something else? This has been my dilemma for the past couple of days. Hubby and I finally agreed on 'Melanie' for baby girl but when I looked up its meaning, I am just not too sure now. I know it shouldn't really matter but......Thoughts?

I never even bothered to look up what my DD's name means. Don't care either. Love the name, its legit, its spelled correctly, and its feminine. As much as I love picking out names, and talking about names, I don't really focus too much on the meaning. I would steer clear of a name more because of something bad it may be associated with (like Adolph), than I would its meaning. Its not like I walk around saying "Hi...my name is _____. It means _____." I don't think I even knew what the meaning of my name was, until I was in high school. And that was for a project and the only time that it ever came up. That was like 16 years ago.....

  • I'm glad to see after reading this thread that other people's DH's are only thinking of silly names or no names at all. This morning just as I was running out the door for work he finally wanted to talk about names! We thought of only 1 boy name and 3 girl names in the short period of time before I left. I was just glad he finally wanted to talk about names seriously...we like Becca, Molly and Brynn for a girl or Henry for a boy which is a family name. Any thoughts or other suggestions for names along those same lines?

"Derived from the Greek Melaina, which is from the root melas (black, dark). The name was made popular through its association with two 5th-century Roman saints, a grandmother and granddaughter remembered for their piety and good works for the poor."

    Whats wrong with the meaning?

Oh, I didn't see the second part. I only read that it meant 'black, dark'. I immediately interpreted that as 'dark and gloomy' hence my hesitation.

Ha same here Brynn is probably my number 1 but my DH's #3. We'll both have to keep working on selling the name to our DH's.

  • @abpl2014Haha yes! I think it's so simple and pretty! He loves Harper for a girl. I like it too but it's so popular right now.
  • What do you think of Preston? I absolutely love it but now I'm hearing/reading online that's it's really preppy or pretentious.
