"Diaper Bag"

"Diaper Bag" is a terrible name. Diapers are gross. So I call it the "mommy bag", and because I'm the one lugging it around, I want it to be somewhat stylish and not scream "this bag may at any given moment carry clothes with poop all over them". In short, I want a stylish tote that just happens to carry my sweet baby's things.

But it also has to be functional. And I don't want to use my current bags because I'll be formula feeding and I remember a few spills with DS.

Anyone else searching for this dream bag? Right now I'm really liking the Lily Jade bags. They have a washable inserts and look like a purse. Any other great bags out there?

Re: "Diaper Bag"

  • I bought a Vera Bradley diaper bag to match my purse before I was even pregnant. It's pretty great and even comes with a matching changing pad.

  • I have two Kate Spade diaper bags and I love them. They look like any other upscale nylon/leather tote from the outside, but the insides are fully wipeable/leakproof and have lots of pockets, stroller loops, etc.

  • I've been dreaming of one of the oemi bags. $300+ is a lot to spend on a diaper bag, but it's so not diaper bag looking I can't stop going back to it.

  • Why can't you use a regular purse? Do you need to bring a lot of stuff when you go places? I was just thinking about a diaper a tissue and maybe another pair of clothing.

You can use a regular purse, but a diaper bag is great for when you inevitably spill something (or need to hang it on a stroller, etc.), plus it's built to hold the things you might want/need, like bottles and a changing pad. You'll want a couple of diapers, wipes, an extra outfit, a bottle if you use them, probably a burp cloth. I always also had a wetbag, some formula and a bottle of water, a pacifier, a small toy, maybe a receiving blanket. Then she got older and I had to start bringing a couple of snacks and a book. I try to keep the bags cleaned out so stuff doesn't accumulate, but it's a full-time job since my husband's approach is to toss in everything he sees like he's throwing together a go bag for the apocalypse.

So yes, you can live without it, but I choose not to.

  • I have a Tory Burch diaper bag & while it was a splurge, I don't regret it! It's amazing.
  • I use my various regular purses (usually totes) and throw in a cute linen pouch that holds diapers, wipes and hand sanitizer. If we are going to be in a situation that warrants it, I just throw in some cheerios, a sipppy cup, and a toy or two. I did use a Kate Spade diaper bag when he was a baby because I felt like I needed a lot more things and to be honest, I was a new mom and loved the idea of an adorable "diaper bag".

You totally can! I love hearing about moms who have learned to pack light. I'm totally not one of them...as much as I wish I was. It probably doesn't help that we live in a very rural community so anytime we go anywhere it's at least and hour away from home and it's usually a day-long event. So I've learned to pack for many possible scenarios.
  • I use a backpack--not fancy, but I love the ease of it.

We also bought a backpack, a "diaper" Eddie Bauer backpack.

Lurking from July. I'm a bag girl in general, but I got the Skip Hop Chelsea Downtown Bag and it's amazing.. Totally looking forward to using it

  • I got a Kate spade "mommy bag" for Christmas from SO and I love it! Very stylish and I definitely wanted something that looked like a purse! It's black with white polka dots so still gender neutral because we're team green! Going to get SO a "daddy bag" that is a back pack like the Eddie Bauer ones
  • I also had a Vera Bradley diaper bag and loved it. I've since bought a Vera Bradley backpack (a normal one with two cup holders on the outside - they have a new diaper bag backpack now too!) and love it! It's so much easier for museums, the library, etc.

  • I was originally going to use my new lululemon gym bag I got as a gift for my bridal shower (still might though), but when I ordered a new wallet from Nordstrom, I got a Petunia Pickle Bottom zip-up that just happens to also have a matching diaper bag, my mom insisted I get the diaper bag. So now I have 2 bags I'll be using.
I also got my hubby a DiaperDude" dad bag for Christmas and he is beyond excited to use it.

  • @HMcDade1 Good recommendation on the Chelsea bag! I just registered for it :)
  • I love the Lily Jade bags, but not the price. I picked up a Skip Hop Duet diaper bag that seriously looks like a purse, so I'm pretty excited about that!
  • JujuBe bags are really nice - the whole thing is washable, so you can just throw the bag in the washer if you have a spill. Some prints/styles are less "diaper bag" looking than others. Personally, I ended up with the backpack style BFF. It doesn't really look stylish or anything, but I finally caved realizing how convenient it is to be able to wear it on your back while chasing two kids around.

  • I'm looking at the JJ Cole backpack/shoulder bag since having the multiple carrying options seems really handy.
  • I've got my eye on a gorgeous Kate Spade "baby bag" ...but, with the price tag attached to it, I'm clearly living in a dream world!
I will definitely be using the bag as my purse, as well, so I want something that looks nice/fashionable, but that's also practical. Apparently I've very picky (or just have champagne taste) because I'm struggling to find anything I really like that's affordable, lol. Time to win that lottery!

  • Agree with the Kate Spade. You can get them for around $100 during the secret sale.

  • @DeePaddy24 is there a Kate Spade Outlet near you? The one near me carries diaper bags sometimes (granted a limited variety) but they do have them! May be worth checking out! Or when I go if theres a certain one you're looking for I'd be happy to look for you... its only 10 mins from my house!

I have had friends recommend the JuJuBe bags as well. Many of the fabrics in the JuJuBe Legacy collection have a less "diaper bag" feel.

  • @MsBeachNJ There is one, but being in Canada I'm not sure the selection would be the same. The bag I've been eyeing is on the US site (with free shipping to the US, but likely not to Canada...bummer)...but I wasn't able to find any on the Canadian site. I'll have to go for a drive & check!

  • I second the secret sale at Kate Spade. I'm waiting for an opportune moment this spring to buy one! I think I signed up for the notifications on their Facebook page. You will get an email when the sale starts and you put in your email address to access the sale.

Also, if you aren't a member on Gilt they have a lot of sales that include diaper bags.

  • I second the petunia pickle bag it has an attached nice thick changing pad that zips down with a place for diapers/wipes right there. Stylish and super easy to clean and use.

  • I got this one on clearance at BRU for $25. It has a bunch of pockets and comes with a changing pad and a stroller strap. I might splurge on a Kate Spade bag later.

  • I absolutely love my petunia pickle bottom bag.  They have semi-annual sales as well where you can get them up to 70% off because they are pricey. I love that I can wear it as a bag or as a backpack.  It has been really functional as well.
  • I went with a Petunia Pickle Bottom bag. My sister had one and loved it. It was easy to keep organized and get to everything. Not to mention I think they are adorable.
  • @BPaisley Do you love it though? That's at the top of my list.

  • I'm a "light packer" for sure, so I don't know how good my advice is. I typically carry one spare diaper and a wet bag (I cloth diaper so I have to carry around a soiled diaper in the wet bag if I change it) and maybe a couple of toys since my kid is older and gets bored. I honestly just use a large-ish Fossil tote bag that I love. I had a diaper bag for about a month and HATED it so I got rid of it. Maybe you could just buy a purse/tote you like and buy a cute wet bag to carry bottles/formula without risking leaks?
  • @mrsmartinez16 I do love it, personally. The best things about it are 1) ability to wear on your back or across shoulder. 2) the way it unzips, so you can easily access things in the back, where a traditional tote style you sometimes have to dig into the bottom grabbing for things.

I used to way over-pack and use huge bags and this has helped me streamline a bit. It doesn't have a ton of space, but enough for a change of clothes, diapers, snacks for two kids. I also have a matching Be Quick where I keep diapers/wipes so I can grab just that for carrying into bathrooms and a Fuel Cell, which I plan to use for storing milk bottles when this one arrives. Both of those have straps that clip, too, so you could hook them onto the outside, as well. They're very mom-friendly.

  • I have a big leather coach diaper bag that I'm obsessed with. It was around $450 but I got it when I was pregnant with my son and had a great job and could afford it. I'll be reusing it for this one! Wipes clean, beige leather, looks like a big ol coach bag outside but is a fully functional diaper bag inside
  • My Kate Spade bags came from one of those surprise sales. Got them both for less than the cost of one full-price bag. Get on their email list for sure.

Also, there was a Diaper Dude recommendation above -- my husband has one too, and although he never remembers to use it (seriously, if it's not sitting in his lap...), when he does, he really likes it.

  • I have a coach diaper bag and I absolutely love it especially since I'm going to be hauling things around for 2 children here soon. I don't love the price tag that was attached but my husbands aunt bought it for me before I could say two words.
