I would explain to my son that the lady is feeding her baby. My son ( 2.5 yrs old now) will be exposed to me breastfeeding my soon to be born daughter and by the time he is in elementary school, he won't think twice about people breastfeeding in public.

I explained to all my older kids (DS-13, DDs-11 and 7) what breastfeeding is and have done it in front of them hundreds of times. None of them see it as anything but normal.

I never had a problem with others breastfeeding in public but it was something I knew I personally wouldn't do ... But then I had my baby ... And now I feel totally different. When baby was screaming the other day and was inconsolable, I breastfed right in front of my FIL - I tried to be discreet - but was not self conscious at all.

Also, even without a cover, I'm showing less breast than half the women I see walking down the street with tight tops on.

Totally didn't expect this to turn into a giant beef with someone shaming women for naturally feeding their babies. My favorite comment probably has to be the "explain to your elementary aged son why a woman is half naked" I mean really?! Who the hell gets half naked to breastfeed? What kind of parent doesn't teach their children about natural body functions? Are you teaching your son to sexualize a breast in elementary school or are you teaching him about the beauty of the human body and how it functions?

really?????????? 1. Girls dressing like sluts does not compare to breast feeding. 2. Women should not be shamed for men "not being able to control themselves". 3. Girls don't even have to be dressed like sluts anymore without being sent home to change. Apparently shoulders also turn boys on. Acting like boys are animals that can't control themselves is exactly what's wrong with this world.

That's the great thing about this - no one is making you breastfeed without a cover in public! However, you don't get to choose if other women do. It's not up to you. Also, there is obviously a large difference between nursing a baby in public and defecating or having sex in public. That is a ridiculous comparison and extremely rude to breastfeeding women everywhere.

It is very rude to children and men of older generation to expose half of your upper body and make them look at you and try to keep their appetite. Is it that hard to cover up? Comparison of natural bodily functions, nothing ridiculous. How would you like someone farting next to your plate in a restaurant? Very natural

Except no one is making them look.

@Knottie82382906 : Except other's opinions ARE getting ridiculed and shamed by her. She has a right to her opinion, but her rights end where she hurts or infringes on another's rights. Shaming and hurting nursing women with your words, glares or antiquated notions is not a right. No one is entitled to hurt other people.

Interestingly, in the 13 years I taught high school and middle school, I never worked with a single teacher who found kids attractive.

Wow. I explain it to plenty of young men: baby needs to eat and this is how babies eat. Sometimes they have bottles, but often this is how they eat. Most school age children just shrug and say "ok".

1.) If exposing "half of your upper body" "is very rude to children and men of older generation" I guess we need to stop wearing strapless wedding dresses or stop allowing children or older men to come to these events. How rude to have wedding cake there when they won't even be able to eat it after seeing such exposure!

2.) As PP said, no one is MAKING THEM LOOK! If it's no big deal to cover up, then as PP also said, those who are offended can put a blanket over their own heads.

3.) Most importantly of all, when I breastfeed my baby at a restaurant, they are having a meal, just like the person next to me. I don't eat pork but I wouldn't be offended if someone at the next table ordered bacon, because I am a rational individual with the concept of individual liberty.

Your sentiment is antiquated at best, and offensive and damaging in reality. If more people felt the way you did, it would be illegal to breastfeed in public, but it isn't. I really think you need to reexamine your bias on this issue and figure out what is at the root of your problem with this.

In the mean time I suggest you keep these opinions to yourself, or at least attempt to qualify them as personal opinions, as these kinds of sentiments and the statements stemming from them can truly impede some women's ability to breastfeed their children.

Why would a woman be half naked?! I've never once removed my shirt and bra and sat in public with my jeans on feeding my kid. It just hasn't ever happened.

Well I itend to breastfeed where and when I need to for my baby...if a few idiotic people take offence then that is their problem!! Perfectly natural thing to do and they can take a hike! I will not be covering up my baby and myself with any silly contraptions either...I'm surprised there are some mums on here who actually think breastfeeding in public is wrong though...!!! You see more boob at the beach and anyway what is wrong with seeing a woman's breast...it doesn't need to be sexualised all the time and the next generation need to learn that, as do some adults apparently!!. And as for my step kids seeing me breastfeed,I want them to feel normal and unembarrassed about this kind of thing. So not an issue.
