third trimester sucks!

Anyone else feel dizzy whenever they try to sleep on back at an elevated level? I sleep now on my sides but the back pain and pelvic pain is unbearable! Not to mention the random waves of nausea i have been feeling these are going to be the longest 11 weeks of my life!

Re: third trimester sucks!

  • i dont really feel dizzy at all. I'm just starting to get lower back/hip/rib pain now. laying on the left side is the most comfortable for me.

  • I just feel like baby is already 10lbs and busting out of my stomach when stretching and vag when she's sleeping. I could cry just walking into work. I don't remember it sucking this bad with dd1 until like week 39. I Black Friday shopped at 41 weeks last time around, and at 31 weeks now I hardly made it to target and back home on a Sunday!
  • The only problem I've had lately is like alligreer said, I feel like baby is enormous. I feel like she could come out anytime and it sucks to go to work when it feels like my stomach will pop open. She (baby) just feels like a huge concrete block sitting above my pelvis. Lol.
  • Try a dose of Tylenol before bed
  • I have low blood pressure so I do get dizzy but not from lying down. It's my understanding you're not supposed to lay on your back too long during 3rd tri, baby compresses some sort of large vein (vena cava?), anatomy class was too many years ago!
  • I still sleep on my back half the night because LO kicks and rolls around like crazy when I sleep on my side, usually left side is better than the right (I think he usually stays on the right).  He is also pressing on my bladders 24/7 so I need to use the restroom about 4 times a night which means no sleep.  No dizziness and back pain is still bearable (until my 19 month old wants me to hold her which happens ALL THE TIME).
  • There is an artery that gets compressed by your uterus when you lay on your back. This is what causes you to feel dizzy. Unfortunately I've been dealing with this since I was about 15 weeks since I'm having twins. It was a fun discovery when I was at the dentist. According to my doctor it's completely normal.

Good to hear everyone is doing ok! I think my biggest hurdle right now are the dizziness waves of nausea, loss of appetite t almost feels like my morning sickness is back i was reading it could be perhaps another growth spurt just got to hang on a little bit longer until i have this princess in my arms it will be all worth it!
  • Not the sleeping (on side with pillows) but yes, everything else is generally sucky. I feel so much bigger and slower and achier this time around and cannot believe I still have 10 weeks left. Gahhhhh.
  • The heaviness!!! I'm a FTM and I walked into the teachers lounge yesterday and said "omg he won't just fall out will be?!" Haha 29 weeks and already he's too heavy.... How the heck am I going to get through another 11 weeks?!
  • @cmerribury yikes! :( That sucks.

OP, I sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs which helps me not wake up with back/pelvic pain. I have a pregnancy pillow which was super helpful with my first pregnancy, but I honestly prefer just a plain old pillow because it takes up less space in the bed. :) If a regular pillow doesn't cut it, pregnancy pillows can be great!

  • I second the pregnancy pillow. I got one early on because I'm a stomach sleeper and had a hard time once I couldn't sleep on my tummy anymore. Now that I'm 31 weeks I would cut a person that tried to take it from me. I prefer it to regular pillows for tummy support because it's tapered and feels more natural and not bulky to me.

  • As a giant (I stand 5'11') the third tri hasn't been too bad... yet. My main complaints are that I can't sit in the recliner for very long without feeling feet in my ribcage (ouch!). I usually end up hanging out on my side in bed in the evenings. Either that or pacing through the house to try to get him to move into a more comfortable position! The heartburn is also lots of fun, so I'm trying to eat meals like soup for dinner so I don't feel like my dinner is eating away my esophagus!

I haven't had much discomfort while walking, but I'm sure that's just around the corner. Tall mom and dad = big baby. It's about to get uncomfortable, I know it!
  • So many random symptoms now! Restless legs like crazy every night. Carpal tunnel symptoms. Acid reflux. General insomnia.
Thus pregnancy was so easy until I hit the third trimester!!

Agreed second trimester was a breeze compared to third! We are almost there!
  • I thought the third trimester was horrible the first time around, however with an extremely active 2 year old and being a stay at home mom I feel like this time it's way worse. The lack of energy, pure exhaustion, aches and pains. Not to mention I'm still suffering from morning sickness. I'm counting down the days till Baby #2 gets here. (52 days in case you were wondering)
  • LO is so heavy-especially cause I'm all stomach sticking out (short torso). My hip is causing extreme pain and I had to stop working. Feeling a bit useless-though I got a prenatal massage today (gift from my dad) so hopefully my hip feels good for a few days. I feel like the boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark. And currently trying to move and take care of a very sick cat (we have to feed him 3+ times a day with a feeding tube) I'm kinda glad I can't work but also I feel like a failure-others can work through their pain, why can't I? I just hate feeling incapable of something.

  • Some days I feel like I could conquer the world and others I feel like I just want to hide in my bed for the next 9 1/2 weeks. Yesterday was such a flash back to the first tri that I may never want to be pregnant again. I have only puked once or twice (knock on wood) in the third tri, where in the first I puked everyday for 3 months. Yesterday I felt so sick I couldn't see straight. I don't get back pain until about 6 hours into a bartending shift. And around that point I can tell I'm really waddling like a penguin. The heartburn has brought me to tears a few times and sleeping is such a pain. Then again I dred getting up and trying to find something to wear, which again brings me to tears. I cry a lot. But baby seems to be on a schedule of kicking me in the bladder promptly at 4:15am everyday. Hmmm so many random symptoms. Could be worse, could be better I suppose.
  • If you're feeling dizzy when on your back, even if it's a position that supposedly ok, it could mean it's causing a circulation restriction. That could be unsafe. I would maybe avoid it until you get a chance to ask your provider about it.
As far as the pain.. At 29.5 weeks I can't live without the chiropractor. Already I'm having to switch to every week instead of very other week. But when I make the time to go I'm so glad I did. It makes such a difference.
I put it off for two weeks recently and regretted that so much. Now I've gotten adjusted back in place and i intend to keep it that way!
  • Right now I am seriously regretting eating so much for dinner. I wasn't even necessarily hungry when I ate, it had just been a while and I knew I needed to. WOW talk about discomfort. I really should have stopped while I was ahead (and I almost did) but it was just too good :( I've been doing pretty good about the amount I eat and what I actually eat, but I feel sooo HUGE. *sigh* only two more hours until I can go home and flop into bed and start tomorrow off with a better plan than today.

  • I despise SPD/PGP!! It's also so frustrating to feel full all of the time, yet hungry! And when you eat and can't physically have more, but you're still hungry, the food is delicious and you know that you'll need to eat again after 1.5 -2 hours! :#
  • I didn't think third trimester was so bad until I came down with the FLU!! It is the worst. Dr put me on Tamiflu which I hate to take not knowing if there may be risks but I guess the benefits outweigh the risks of flu complications... Hope no one else has to deal with this.
  • I have been fighting flu like symptoms for over a weeks. The nausea comes and goes but the diarrhea has been sticking. Plus I have a cough that never goes away (I have had it for almost 3 months now). Just started a coughing fit which led me to run to the bathroom, sit on the toilet and use the trash can too. Don't think I have moved that fast in a while.
  • Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing waves of nausea! I thought that was only a first trimester thing (although my morning sickness was very minimal anyway). Last weekend I got super nauseous almost as soon as I started eating at my fav restaurant :(

I'm also pretty short (5'3") with a short torso, so I'm feeling pretty big and like my lungs are being squished nowadays...less than 8 more weeks to go at least! :)))

sounds miserable!! Luckily my flu has not involved any nausea or bathroom trouble. At first I thought it was a really bad cough but the fever was what made me call my midwife and they wanted a flu test done asap. You might want to get tested although if your symptoms started a week ago it will be too late for Tamiflu which you are supposed to start within 72 hours.

Hope you feel better soon! I have been dealing with a bad flu for 3 weeks now. First started off with a fever, then really bad sinus congestion to the point where my gum and face hurt and now it's just a stuffy nose. The worst part is the peeing in the pants every time I cough, sneeze or blow my nose (I think I mentioned this before). Not to mention a really raw nose and not able to sleep with all the aches and pains. Awful experience!
  • I feel awful for everyone going through the flu!! I can't imagine.... For those that are congested, try using a Netti pot. I use mine once a week at least to clear my sinuses (I teach 1st grade and have been very lucky this year so far).

I'm stuck inbetween being super uncomfortable while trying to sleep due to my belly and wondering why my belly isn't getting much bigger! Then my fears of growth restrictions keep me up all night. FTM so I just don't know how my body grows babies and it's kinda stressful at times! I'm so anxious to go to my next appt and see if he's growing on schedule still. Last time he was a few days behind my EDD, the doctor said that's normal but I'm so worried about my baby. I'm praying now that I'm in single digits for weeks left (9 weeks and 5 days lol) that time will go more quickly.
  • Wow, I'm surprised to read so many people's stories of difficulty this trimester. I'll count myself lucky then... this is my first pregnancy and so far the third trimester has been a breeze. Tons of energy and no noticeable complaints except occasional heartburn. Well, and all the damn pee breaks in the middle of the night. I did have some serious muscle cramps in my legs for two and a half weeks but I noticed that they only happened while I was at home visiting my family for the holidays. I think it was because I didn't exercise *at all* while I was visiting. I was hitting the gym every day before the holiday trip and never had any leg cramps. Then when I got back from the holiday trip I returned to the gym and/or long walks every day and ever since returning I haven't experienced those leg cramps again. So if any one is suffering from those, maybe getting out for a nice walk and stretching a lot might help relieve them. I'm also supplementing with Magnesium which might be helping too. Not sure... Wishing everyone luck for the last few weeks. 9 weeks left myself! So excited to meet her!
  • Well, I'm now in FTM territory (never been this far along before) and let me tell you all this pain sucks!! The hip pelvic pain/pressure is killing me!

  • My hips are causing me a whole lot of pain right now, the right more than the left.
Legs are like tree trunks, ankles exist only in the first half of the day, feet started to swell last week & over the weekend swelled so bad I think there's internal bruising from the pressure. Got them to go down after elevating over my heart for more than 12 hours. Serious waddling going on at this point - waiting for a rash to break out from my thighs rubbing together.
Carpal tunnel full blown on the right side, developing on the left.
She will lay funny sometimes & put awkward uncomfortable pressure on my diaphragm. Small bursts of heartburn but so far Tums takes care of it.
Watching carbs, watching salt, drowning in water consumption & peeing every half hour around the clock.
  • My hip pain is worsening, and the stretching and exercises I've done with PT seem to be making it worse. I've "Dr. Googled" myself and don't like what I'm reading, I have myself convinced I have a labral tear in my hip. I can't sit, stand, or lay comfortably. I also have SPD and serious SI pain, and vulvar varicose veins (though these are managed ok with PT, massage, and a support strap). OB put me on work restrictions for 5 hours a day 3 days a week because I have such an active job. It's so hard to imagine that my previous pregnancy I had no issues other than being huge!

  • Is anyone else having pelvic pressure? I'm at week 31 and wearing a belly belt for support. I also started icing down below and sleep with a crazy body pillow. Is this real life? I'm sad this is legitimately my post. Any advice is appreciated.
  • Yep to pelvic pressure. It's normal.
  • The pelvic pressure is intense. Going from sitting to standing has not been very smooth.
  • I've heard the pressure is normal.... It's awful to walk around when it's like that. I seem to get it once a week all day, but mostly just around 2:30 at the end of the school day when I still have to walk all my kiddos out to dismiss them. He feels like a 50 lb bowling ball at that point!
  • I'm having both the pressure mixed with PAIN.  I had to take Tylenol last night to get the pain to stop.

  • Almost 31 weeks and last night was one of the toughest nights of my life! I felt super nauseaous that i had to go to bed early and take a bigger dosage of the phenergan. I talked to a midwife about it and although my glucose is normal and iron is a little bit low she said the nausea is most likely being caused by the pregnancy itself and good old morning sickness can be coming back the phenegran is a life saver just hate how loopy it makes me feel. Anybody else suffer morning sickness this late into pregnancy and did it go away? I also feel constantly exhausted with no energy..so ready to be myself again only 9 more weeks!
