NBR: Interviewing

I could use some opinions and feedback - I got an email this afternoon from one of the job recruiters I've been working with, and he was able to get me an in-person interview with a company next week. I will be about 20 weeks by then, and depending on how things go during the interview, I don't plan on disclosing my pregnancy unless the extend an offer. Being that this position is only a 12 month contract and not long term, I am hesitant to get my hopes up.

My question: What the heck does a pregnant lady wear to an interview? The interview will be in a professional setting for a Project Management position. Jeans aren't appropriate obviously (not that mine fit anymore anyway), and I don't have any dress pants that would fit. Would my black maternity leggings with a blouse that covers my butt and a pair of boots be appropriate? Other suggestions?

Re: NBR: Interviewing

  • I am all for dressing higher than the part you're being recruited for. If you don't have a black suit coat and dress pants you could wear, would you have a black dress you could wear with tights and boots rather than leggings? I also say black just because it's very slimming and can hide any bump.

Congrats on the interview :-) even though you're not getting your hopes up, I wish you the best!

  • I would second wearing a dress...or just using this opportunity to go pick up a nice maternity pencil skirt or dress pants. Will come in handy for other interviews (or wearing to work) for the next 6 months anyway.

Thanks @NicknShan and @Emztron500! I do have a black dress, but it's fairly short and significantly above the knee. I may have to make a Target run to see if they have anything more appropriate for dresses/skirts. Regular pants are not going to cut it, and I'm not about to splurge on a pair of maternity dress pants that I will likely only wear once!
  • A-line or pencil skirts with looser tops and a nice blazer would be both figure flattering and appropriate.

Waiting for a clothing montage from you! :) GL on your interview, so exciting! My suggestion: buy some maternity slacks, preferably no tight ankle, or wear a belly band with your old pants. A loose black or dark blouse that hits around hip and a suit coat/blazer. Ankle boots or pumps for footwear. The loose blouse and blazer duo will hide the frame of your bump even when sitting or picking up your purse/briefcase.
  • Ooh yes @HBMama2B is right--yes to ankle boots or pumps.

Also I'm so rude! Congrats and good luck.
  • I wore my black dress pants that didn't fit anymore with a black belly band and a dress shirt that was loose fitting around the stomach. I got the job and they didn't know I was pregnant. I just told them today actually
  • Looking forward to the pics! I love Target it's a serious problem lol. If you don't find anything, do you have any friends or family that have a pair of maternity dress pants you could borrow?
  • Y'all have the Redcard and Cartwheel, right?!

@mrsschmity so happy you stared this thread. I am taking my NCLEX on Jan 26 and will be interviewing for RN positions at 21+ weeks. I honestly don't think my bump is disguisable so I'll probably just rock it. I'm thinking I'll probably go the black skirt or dress route. Good luck at the interview! I Hope you find something cute at target.

ETA you might have luck at a maternity second hand store to find a pair of black slacks that were worn one time.
  • I'd second all the votes for black slacks, dress, or dark maternity pencil skirt. Like @WSU2015 said, you might find a great option at a maternity consignment store, if you have one accessible.

Congratulations on the interview! Wishing you the best of luck, @mrsschmity!

Good luck prepping for the NCLEX @WSU2015!
  • Congrats on the interview! I don't think leggings are appropriate in any professional setting. A dress with a blazer or a suit, even if I had to purchase one, would be my go-to.
