Feeding LO - January

Re: Feeding LO - January

  • @klirwin82 We did 2oz formula to 4 oz bm for a week or two and just this week went to 50/50. You might have to try a few brands, but this seems very LO specific. We're using Gerber Soothe without issue, but obviously every baby is different.

  • Fuck me, I think I have thrush.
  • Well my kid has RSV. Won't eat at all
  • @klirwin82 for a very long time I was bf and also feeding similac advanced. Due to chronic low supply I had to supplement from the beginning. I've only just recently gone to 100% formula in the past month or so. But I've been using the similac advanced from the beginning with no issues anywhere along the way

  • At least she has teeth ^^ haha
We're working with nothing over her. My fiancé gave her a puff the other day and ended up shoving his finger into her mouth to get it out..
  • ^Be sure she's really choking before he does this or he could actually make things worse. If there's coughing, gagging or any air at all getting through then they are working to get it out, otherwise it could be pushed further down by our fingers. She may have actually been choking just wanted to make sure he knows this
  • Pretty sure LO is going to be using mesh feeders and eating purrees until she's 20. I cannot get over my fear of her choking. She uses her teeth to rip pieces of things off so she won't just gum food anymore.

I'm with you! We have no teeth either @caitlincunn
  • Ok good to know @janit368
This is why I don't suggest having kids 5 years apart! I don't remember anything. Even when we give her cucumber or peppers to chew on while we eat she bites pieces off somehow so I'm nervous about it. I should look into blw to calm me down.
  • LO took a huge piece of shredded chicken yesterday. She worked on it for five minutes while I sat there with my hands clentched, tearing up, and struggling not to reach into her mouth. She would gag every minute or so. She finally gagged it up to the front of her mouth to wear I could safely grab it. She was totally fine, and that's what they are supposed to do, but I will be shredding them much finer from now on. DH wasn't nervous at all. He said he knew he could easily flip her over and heimlich it out. Thank god one of us is confident.
  • @dancegurl1118 we are in similar boats maybe! LO uses her teeth to buy off huge chunks of things she can't possible swallow so I'm chickening out and sticking to purées :/
  • We haven't had any choking moments yet, a few gags, but no choking. Thank goodness! I'm much more relaxed with her eating than DH is. I watch her really closely, but I like to let her do her thing and learn from it. So far so good. We haven't tried proteins yet.
  • We actually just today had a potential choke, on a fricking baby mum mum of all things. He had broken it into a piece with his hands, all the way across the width of the mum mum, but only as 'tall' as the width of my pinky (basically, a skinny ass rectangle). I was watching and was thinking, 'if he's going to choke on this, it will be on that piece right there'. Sure as shit, he 'bit' it in half (with his gums, no teeth yet) which left a piece the size of my thumbnail in his hand, and another same sized piece in his mouth. And he immediately started gagging and doing the neck stretch thing. So I grabbed him up, flipped him over / upside down, and pounded his back. It came out along with a little bit of foamy spit up.

    1) really glad DH is baby CPR certified and we've a few times gone over what to do if he chokes
    2) while he did manage a whole mum mum later without incident, I know now that maybe we should proceed a little more slowly with actual food.

  • Man, I neve worried about choking. Now you all have me thinking I need to learn the baby heimlich. Which I should.

Again, why is feeding a baby so damn complicated?
  • ^^^^ this. A friend told me they had to do the Heimlich on her baby (he's 18 months) 3 times. WTF. Tell me that's not normal 2nd time moms!

^ None of the moms I know that have done BLW have ever had to intervene

Edited I have heard to like count to 10 or so on gags helps to make yourself wait and let baby clear it... Remember if there's coughing or other air coming through its not choking. We did take a cpr course though
  • ::looks up baby cpr course::
  • @janit368 last night we let lo munch on a slice of pepper while we were eating dinner, she loves chewing on it. She broke a piece off and started to gag so I sat there staring at her making sure she was ok and trying to see where the pepper was in her mouth, She stopped for a second and then kept doing it but when her mouth was opened i saw the pepper was towards the front of her mouth in her cheek kinda, so i grabbed it from there. Thanks for letting me know not to worry right away, as she did get it to the front of her mouth!
  • @amccoy129 That's not normal. We never did purees with DS and never had any issues with table food. So far, the only thing I had to do was get a teething cookie that was stuck to the roof of her mouth. She wasn't at risk of choking, but she couldn't take her bottle.

From my understanding of choking at any age, as long as they are getting air (coughing, gagging, etc) it is more dangerous to try to intervene. If they are silent and choking, then it's really choking.
  • ^^^^ I was wondering if they possibly intervened too early. It scared me when she said that!
  • ^^ yes I wasn't sure in my situation if I should have waited a bit longer to see if he could work it out for himself or just go ahead and act. Next time I will try to let him work on it longer as long as he is able to breathe (or at least until he is really beginning to struggle). But it was a nice confidence booster to be able to react and 'solve' the problem. Kind of a practice run so if I do have a real emergency I've at least gone thru the motions before

  • Awesome @caitlincunn !! My LO eventually spits out the big chunks himself too. What gross babies :)
  • ^ yep, mine bit off a decent piece of banana, gagged a couple times, and then spit it out. She's actually starting to consume things these days! She loved pierogi and mushrooms and onions last night. Definitely prefers savory over sweet which is fine by me.
  • Pretty sure LO is going to be using mesh feeders and eating purrees until she's 20. I cannot get over my fear of her choking. She uses her teeth to rip pieces of things off so she won't just gum food anymore.
Seriously. After reading up on this thread, I was so excited to give LO some chunky stuff. But as prepared for it as I was, the gagging thing was super freaky. Won't be ready to try that again for a while.

  • LO hasn't had anything but store bought purees. At his 6 month appointment, they said no finger foods until 9 months. We are still in stage one foods, but wondering if he's ready for stage 2. I've asking again on February 5 when we go for his flu booster. He really watches us eat and I think he wants something else.
  • Um if anything I'm just getting more anxious reading this thread. I deal with potential emergencies all the time at work but I'm so scared I'm going to freeze and not call 911 if the back blows aren't working. Just thinking about our poster friend too who has this turn out tragic and I'm so nervous. Purrees forever.

  • ^^ yessss. This is what is always in the back of my mind too, @dancegurl1118. It actually takes some of the 'shine' off of trying foods, because in a part of my mind I am grieving for her right then.

@KarasTwin my pedi said at his 6m appt we could go to stage 2 purées, for something 'thicker'. Tho to me, they look like the same thing except more of it. Anyway, maybe your pedi said the finger foods thing at 9m because by then they (most babies) should have a well developed gag reflex? I'm totally guessing. I have no insight into the whole 9m thing

(Tho, side note, yikes! That's so close!)

  • @mellymar he's going to be 7 months in a week. How is this possible? Wasn't I just a big, miserable pregnant mess just yesterday?

I was just saying as I got LO out of bed this morning "when did you get bigger? I missed it"

  • I constantly tell Henry to slow his roll. It's fun watching him grow and learn, but it's too damn fast.
  • @dancegurl1118 after her chicken experience I looked at DH and said "didn't that freak you out?!?!" Nope. He was calm cool and collected. I'm so afraid that if its my own kid, that I'll freeze and blank on what to do. I need to practice on a doll or something to get some confidence.
  • Can someone who had their milk dry up explain to me how I would know if this happened?
  • @mellymar we had the same experience with a mum mum a few weeks ago, he bit off a huge chunk and of course got the whole piece in his mouth and started gagging. Freaked me out, and after that he wanted nothing more to do with the mum mum! I've tried them every now and again still and he will take a few bites but really isn't interested.
This boy loves being fed with a spoon.
I moved him to stage 2 purees at about 6.5 months, they do seem the same consistency as stage 1. I have been mixing them with either rice cereal or oatmeal to make them a bit thicker so he gets used to the thicker consistency.
  • @mellymar we had the same issue with a mum mum just the other day. He literally bit off more than he could handle and I realized the issue is they get sticky before they get mushy.

It stuck in the back of his tongue and instead of gagging he started to try and intake air quickly. It was big enough that I swiped it out before he could inhale it.

No more mum moms here or if I do they will be pre moistened so they aren't sticky and they are easier to manipulate in his mouth.

  • Lo loves food more than breastmilk now. She nursed at 3. 5:30 we gave her dinner. I made oatmeal, she ate a whole 4oz jar, and finished her jar from lunch! I don't know if she's getting enough milk she seems so uninterested.
  • so my frozen milk is off and this makes me sad :(

@upandbelow off how? Does it smell funny? Mine has high lipase and smells NASTY but LO doesn't mind and drinks it. It smells like old metallic nails to me. I don't know what new nails smell like but...this definitely smells like old nails.

  • @dancegurl1118 like sourish...but not like bad milk sour? It's hard to explain lol. I really notice it when I test the temp on my wrist and then wipe it off. The spot where I rubbed it smells awful! But either way LO turns it down :(. This doubly makes me sad because my supply sucks and she also turns her nose up at formula so I'm not quite sure what to do.
