3.5 month milestones

Okay first of all I'm going to apologize because I feel like I have been posting a lot on here lately! Lol! But, I am just wondering what exactly every one else's babes are doing at around 3-4 months. My son just started rolling from tummy to back and he chews on his hands non stop. However, he doesn't really grab for toys unless we put them in his hands. He will chew on Sophie the giraffe, only if we put it on him or in his hands. He holds his head and body pretty steady if we sit him up but cannot sit up on his own.

I know every baby is different but I have a friend who tells me all the time how advanced her son is (exactly one month older) and it makes me wonder if my son isn't developing at the normal rate, or if she just exaggerates things.. For example, her son is standing unassisted, as well as sitting unassisted. He drinks from a sippy cup if he isn't nursing, he rolls around the living room (tummy to back, back to tummy), and has slept thru the night since he was born. I realize he is older than my son but he has been sitting unassisted for at least a month now. Is she exaggerating? Or are we just super behind?

    16 weeks here. Not rolling. Not sitting. Likes to stand with help. Can't really pick up toys but grabs the rings on her activity mat.

    Every baby is different they have different things that interest them so they will learn how to do it first. We are the same age and she will ocasionally grab toys does not role but loves to sit up. They will not sit unsupported until closer to 6 months from what I have read.

    This is so reassuring! I am so NOT a one upper type of person and it seems she is always doing it to me. Or, comparing babies I should say, with hers always being way more advanced. Thanks for your input :)

    I agree with @ItsmeagainR30 . every baby develops @their own pace. I doubt her 4.5 or 5 month old stands on his own without assistance, sitting i believe but standing? But who knows you have to see to believe. The whole sleeping thing it depends on your routine and how much you're feeding at bed time and during the day. My twins only feed once at 1am but dont wake up i wake up and feed them before they wake up on their own and they eat asleep and stay asleep. They like to stand with my support of course. One of my twins reaches for his toys on his chair while my other twin just stares @ it. One of my twins started laughing before the other.one rolling before the other and they are only 5 min apart. Your son will do things when hes ready and he seems to be doing what hes "supposed" to be doing according to my kids doctor.

    LO rolled back to front today, at 17w. She's been going front to back for a while. She can grasp and wave a rattle, but it takes a long time to pick it up herself-misses more times than she gets it. Sitting is a long way off. I think most people who say a baby under 6m is "sitting by themselves" just means they can stay sitting once put in that position. Babies I've seen generally are on all fours and push back into a sitting position when learning to get up by themselves. DD1 was 7mo, I've seen other babies do it earlier, but none at 4 months.

    My little one is 16 weeks. She still has no interest in rolling, and I try not to let it bother me! But She grabs her toys like no other and loves sitting and standing assisted.

    This exactly!!

    I'm not a bit worried...... Just means I have more of a break time before I have to be running around after this little one non-stop! :) I'm soaking it all in while I can!

    My son is 3.5 months and is doing very similar things to your son. Some of those things sound pretty far fetched for a 4/4.5 month old but who knows. My son was an early roller, but a late smiler and babbler. I have a friend with a baby the same age and he was the exact opposite!

    I agree all babies will learn skills at different times and rates and in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter. By the time they are 1.5 nobody will be able to tell which babies were early or late rollers, crawlers, walkers, smilers, etc. They'll have evened out. I know it's hard when you have someone making comments like that, but try to brush them off!

    Honestly, this sounds like exaggeration to me! Have you seen her kid do any of this stuff lol? I guess it's possible he's doing these things, but it seems really early for some of it. Plus I feel like kids are usually advanced in one or two areas and typical in others, and aren't globally advanced like your friend is sort of claiming. Your baby sounds right on track to me! FWIW, my son is 4 months and has never rolled, and doesn't seem like he'll start anytime soon, but he tries to crawl during tummy time! I sort of think he's going to skip the rolling and move right to crawling.

    My son rolls back to belly, but only to the right lol. Then he gets tired of being on his belly and fusses, and when I roll him into his back he immediately rolls back over and gets upset!

    My LO is one of the oldest on this board (born Sept 2nd, he's almost 19 weeks) and falls pretty much in the middle as far as milestones. He isn't sitting unassisted, has only rolled tummy to back a couple of times and that's been weeks ago, he still hasn't really even laughed! So don't worry. As far as your friend goes.. everyone has one obnoxious braggy friend, especially when it comes to having a new baby. The truth is you can do absolutely everything right and your kid is still going to do what they want when they want..

    And as a side note if she is legitimately giving her 4 or 5 month old a sippy cup that's dangerous. They can easily aspirate when the flow is not controlled like it is with bottle nipples. That is way too young for a sippy cup.

    My guy is 4 months old:
    - rolls occasionally onto his side only
    - Not reaching for toys
    - Not laughing
    - Not sitting up yet but tries
    - if I put a toy in his hand he will hold it for a minute
    - always has his hands in his mouth

    Have you physically seen her baby do all of these things? I feel they all can't be true. Sleeping through the night since birth? That can't be possible when they need to eat every 2 hours. I have a friend who's son is 17 days older then mine and I try not to compare my son to hers but it's definitely hard not to so I understand how you're feeling. My son is excelling in growth but her son has been rolling over since 9 weeks old so I thought my son was super behind.

    My son is also one of the older ones on here and born September 3rd. He was 15 days early though so I have to remind myself he may do things a few weeks later then I expect to see. He's technically 18 weeks and he's not rolling over and hasn't done it once. He can rock to his side from his back but that's all. He grabs and reaches for toys with both his hands and can bring them to his mouth. He sat up unassisted at 14 weeks one time but he's working really hard on doing it himself now. He has his hands in his mouth all day everyday and refuses the binky now. He's started laughing too but he's a tough crowd

    Enjoy the no rolling while you can!! My son born on sept 7th has been rolling for a few weeks. He does what I call 'the gator roll' and I hate it! He rolls back, tummy, back, tummy and will travel five feet in two minutes. He has been reaching for things for a long time now. Everything goes straight to the mouth. So for over five weeks I have to sanitize stuff nonstop! He talks up a storm and does this high pitched scream. It's crazy what changes in five weeks time. I do enjoy listening to his laugh. I don't even know the milestones or when they are suppose to achieve things. Is there a good resource everyone is using?

    No, I haven't physically seen her son do these things but she "reminds" me of it all the time! I feel like she is exaggerating and making it a competition but I just didn't know if that was just me being a defensive mom lol. I feel a lot better hearing what you all have to say! Good to know he is right where he should be! He has his 4 month appt jan 28 and I planned on talking to his doc about it bc I was worried! I can rest a little easier now :) thank you all so much!!

    Well your friend's baby sounds like a perfect baby lol. You shouldn't be worried, if it makes you feel better my son doesn't roll over yet. He doesn't really like tummy time but he is pretty strong and is picking up his head just fine.I tried a few teething toys but he doesn't like them yet. I noticed he chews on his pacifier lol.

    Haha, my son is 17 weeks and does this exact same thing!  He rolls back to belly, but cannot get himself back over again.  He'll be fine for awhile on his belly and then gets upset, so I roll him back and he immediately rolls back onto his belly again, too funny.  Never ending process with him!

    On a daily basis, my LO: (4 months)
    * Smiles
    * Laughs out loud
    * Babbles
    * Grabs toys within reach but only holds them for a few seconds
    * Reaches for things hanging from the activity mat
    * Rolls onto his side
    * Sits or stands assisted
    * Has good head control
    * Spends an insane amount of time chewing on his hand and drooling- lol!

    He hasn't rolled from tummy to back or back to tummy yet and doesn't really seem interested in doing so.
