I had my 1-hour GTT today. It was as trivial of an experience as it gets. They gave me a beverage that tasted like a sweet orange Tang. Drank it in 5 min, 1h later had the blood work, nothing out of the ordinary. Just wanted to share.
I am headed to mine in about an hour. I forgot I had it today when I ate two strawberry donuts for breakfast and an iced coffee. derderder
I ate, like, 6 cookies right before mine. I am *hoping* that is why I failed the one hour. I took the three hour on freaking new years eve, after having family and all their cookies in my house for a week.
I took my 1 hour test at my 24 week appointment (a week and a half ago). I failed, but I didn't pig out on anything necessarily before my appointment. I think I had a banana and peanut butter for breakfast and maybe a yogurt? I was not asked to fast of do anything different besides drink the glucose drink 1 hour before my appointment so I didn't have to wait in the Dr's office.
Last Wednesday I had my 3 hour test and I was asked to fast - nothing to eat after midnight. Once you start the 3 hour test you cannot even drink water as it will dilute the glucose drink in your system. That was probably the hardest part because it was so disgustingly sweet I was dying for a drink of water. For those who haven't taken the test and are wondering the procedure of the 3 hour test - you have your blood drawn before the drink, then you must drink the drink in 5 minutes. After that it's 3 more blood draws - one at 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours.
I'm hoping to get my results later today or tomorrow and praying it's good news!
I'm supposed to do mine this week. I have a needle phobia and I usually have panic attacks from having blood drawn. I asked my mom to go with me and it turned into this huge fiasco of her wanting me to go to the dmv immediately following for my brother to get his lisense, and I'm an asshole for telling her it isn't a good idea that day. Now I'm going by myself, and I've been in off and on hysterics over it all night.
Sorry, off topic. I'm just really upset.
Fellow needle phobic here, and you've got all my sympathy. I've been doing better than I anticipated with all the blood draws, but this one has me more freaked out than the others. Knowing that I'll have to be in or near the lab for at least an hour doesn't help, since I typically start going all jello-legs the minute I leave my home or work and don't exit panic mode until the whole experience is over. So far the big thing that's been helping with the pre-needle anxiety is doing all my blood tests on the fly, the same day that the doc prescribes them for me (this one, unfortunately, I wasn't able to schedule that way). Same with the flu shot... a fellow pregnant needlephobe friend texted me to let me know she was getting hers last week, and within a few minutes of her text I was on my way to CVS to get mine in the name of solidarity.
Best advice I can give you: if you can, go today. Screw whatever else you had planned, just go and get it over with, because anticipation is the worst and if you're anything like me, the more time you have to work yourself up about it the worse the ensuing panic will be. Or, if you want solidarity and don't already have an appointment, I'm headed in at 7:45 CST on Friday for mine; I'll be online and ready to bump/commiserate if you want some virtual hand-holding
I had a terrible reaction to the drink but that is because I've always had a sensitive stomach to sugars. I don't digest fructose, dextrose or maldextrose well. I had all kinds of GI distress including diarrhea and vomiting. It took 4 days for my appetite to return. All that being said, I passed my test and now don't have to think about it until I have another baby. Maybe for the next one I'll see if there is another option because my experience was horrible.
@NOLA520 at first they gave me a red one (I had the red one last time, not horrible but not great) and then I asked if they had orange (also had last time for the 3 hour test) so they switched it out. The orange one is delish!!! I am taking my test today and not going to lie, kind of looking forward to it lol
@NOLA520 - I was super excited because they let me pick between the orange and lime instead of just giving one to me at random. I dislike orange flavored beverages that aren't orange juice, but lime is my favorite flavor of everything, so... Yay!

I actually liked the orange one as well. But I really, really wanted to brush my teeth. It just felt so syrupy. But I liked the taste!

How did you do?
I did okay. I was in before they had any other patients, so the phlebotomists and the receptionist were all pretty chatty, which helped distract me during the 1 hour wait. I even managed to hold it together while they were doing the blood draw... right up until the phlebotomist had to move the needle (first time that's ever happened!) and told me "I can see why you're so scared, you've got tricky veins. Not just anybody could stick you." Well then. Nobody's ever told me that before, so I just assumed I was an easy patient (you know, other than the shaking and the crying) and reassured myself that whoever was sticking me would have no trouble getting things done super quick and super easy. There goes that line of positive thinking!
@AGK2015 I went from 9:30 the night before to not getting the first draw done until 11, drank the drink, spent the next hour trying to not vomit, got my blood drawn again at noon, almost passed out, and didn't get to eat until about 1:30. Drink was terribly sweet to me, and I had a hard time finishing it. I did rinse my mouth out several times with water throughout the process and that helped immensely. (Rinse and spit lol)

They did my first draw at 8am. It's just mean to make anyone (but especially a pregnant woman) wait that long! I was out the door and eating by 11:15am.
Apparently they do the test differently at my current doctor versus what I had with DS1. With DS1, I had to fast for 8 hours, have my blood drawn, drink the nasty, and then have my blood drawn again after an hour. This time around they told me that I do not need to fast and only need to have my blood drawn once. They even gave me the drink in advance so I could drink it right before my appointment! Last time I almost puked. Hoping things go a little bit more smoothly this time around when I take it later this month.
Sitting and waiting for my blood draw now... I actually thought the (lime) glucose drink was delicious. Maybe this won't be SO bad after all.
I'm secretly hoping I get the orange and that it's delicious. I've craved orange crush soda a lot during this pregnancy, so it's very exciting when people compare it to that.
As an 'orange glucola' surivor, I can say it's not exciting. At All.

Ugh. Luckily, they only drew blood once for me (THANK GOD), and I got to do it right around the time I'm usually just getting ready for work (and several hours before I usually eat anything or even drink any coffee), so I probably had it easier than you did. Fingers crossed that both of us pass with flying colors and don't have to do any follow-up.
Assuming we pass, it seems like we're almost done with the routine blood tests. Hallelujah!
I had my test on wed. The drink was the orange one that tasted like the syrup from a melted ice pop (not going to lie really enjoyed it) I drank it at home 30 min before my appt and then went in and took my blood exactly and hour after finishing it! I wasn't allowed to eat before my appt so luckily I made the appt 1st thing in the morning And I'm assuming I passed because the doctor said the results came in the next day and no news is good news woooo!!!
You guys are funny with the needle phobias! nothing like being pricked 4 times in one day to get over that phobia ) I had my 3 hour test today after failing the 50g with a 173 result. With the 50g I felt very sick the whole day after. The 100g I had no problems at all (fasting made all the difference) and I passed the 100g with flying colours!! Yay!!! So happy. I was so hungry after the last blood draw that I downed a tuna sandwich, mcdonalds happy meal and strawberries with Nutella today!!!
I had my test today (27w2d). The orange drink reminds me of this silly little juice jugs I drank as a kid. Maybe it's because I have a major sweet tooth and a mom who's run a bakery most of my life, but the only side effect I had was some shakiness right after drinking it. I just feel bad for baby girl because she's been active for pretty much the rest of the day.
I had the test the other day and yep, no big deal. I was surprised that the drink was not orange but clear-- it tasted like flat, super sugary sprite. That was the only shocker.
For anyone who has trouble getting through the sweetness of the 3 hour one, drinking though a straw helps a lot! The lab I went to really recommended it and I'm glad they did!
Just wanted to chime in after my glucose test today and say that everyone is different, because I honestly did not feel that it was bad at all. I had read the horror stories and was not looking forward to it, but it went better than I expected. I had lemon lime, which I've heard is the most palatable flavor, and I chilled it in advance. It isn't something that I would normally drink but I didn't experience any vomiting or diarrhea or really even nausea. I did have some gas, though. I've felt fine for the rest of the day, too. Hope that gives some moms hope that it may not be as bad as you're expecting!
I had mine today as well. It was freezing cold (orange flavor), and I was just fine with it. The description of flat orange soda was pretty accurate, so I definitely didn't want to sit sipping on it. I chugged it and went on my merry way. A few minutes later the baby was kicking like crazy from the sugar high, and I took a loooong nap in the afternoon, but no big horrific side effects.

I also heard so many horror stories about the glucose test and it wasn't bad at all. Even the three hour test (which I also failed) wasn't bad. The worst part of both was sitting around waiting for the next draw and taking off the band aids or tape each time. Now that I'm on a GD diet I'd welcome that orange drink just to have something sweet!
I wrote a very detailed account of my tests and an update on how the first visit with a GD nurse went on my blog. https://maybemommy.weebly.com/

I had mine this morning, too. The drink was rough but not the worst thing I've ever drank. I got really jittery about 15 minutes after I finished it, but the jitters gradually subsided the closer I got to the blood draw. It's been a few hours since I my blood was drawn, and I definitely feel more drained and exhausted today. Oh, and my doctor told me that it didn't matter if I fasted so I had some eggs for breakfast, because I knew I would feel awful if I didn't eat until I got finished at 9:30.
I didn't even know there was a 1 hour test. I was just told not to eat anything past midnight the night before and I came in at 10am and did 3 blood draws over a 2+ hour period. Drank the clear stuff. It wasn't bad. I was so freaking hungry though and baby was going nuts!

I feel you. I had an omelette for breakfast because I knew I would feel even worse without food. My results came back today - normal. Very thankful!
I just got a call with the results from my Dr that I failed my 1 hour glucose test. They said I failed to the point that they aren't going to bother with the 3 hour glucose test - and want me to go right to testing my blood 7x a day with a glucometer. Not the news I was expecting to hear. I never knew I had issues with glucose/blood sugar, so this was really a surprise to me to hear. Needless to say, I pretty bummed about it... but ill start testing tomorrow and follow up with the Dr in 2 weeks to see how things are going. I really hope this doesn't effect the baby and can be controlled. Anyone else have to do this? Any advice/support is welcomed. Thanks!

Holy heck, that totally blows! I'm assuming you have to adjust your diet as well? I thought I had failed badly... 130 was passing and I got 155, but when I called they said I just needed to take the 3 hour and go from there. I plan on cutting back a little on the sweets and carbs regardless, but all that monitoring?? I'm so sorry!

7 times?!? Holy crap! 4 is standard from my reading (fasting in AM and then 2 hours after each main meal)...do you have to test after snacks, too?

Can you request the 3-hour? I failed the 1 hour MISERABLY. Like, when I told my friend who is a midwife about it she was really alarmed- the result was 182, when it is supposed to be 130 or less. Then, at the 3-hour, I came in way under the limit and they cleared me.
I don't see why they won't at least let you take the test?
@carpediempeace Sorry to hear that. Did you eat a very carb-loaded dinner the evening prior, or a sugary breakfast/coffee the morning of? If you are at a healthy weight and genuinely feel you are eating a well balanced diet, you can push back a little and say you want to request the next tier of testing. If you suspect the test may be right though, it's better you know now and just get it under control. The ladies here are super supportive with one another I'm anxiously awaiting the results of mine as well, and I ate cheesecake with lunch the day before...

We have a support group as it were for us GDs. My first dietitian wanted me to test 7 times a day as well. 1 hour after every meal and snack and one fasting in the morning. I had to keep my sugar levels under 120 at that time. It got really old fast! I was hungry all the time... And probably not getting enough carbs. Thankfully we moved and I got a new group of docs and nurses that are WONDERFUL! If they didn't send you to a dietitian, diabetes nurse, and a perinatologist, I would seriously question your OB. Without the help of all my wonderful team, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be eating anything, producing ketones (which are bad for the baby) because I wasn't getting enough carbs, and give up. If you're stressing out over the plan they have you, let them know. My new practice thinks the diabetes department of the old one were a bunch of quacks. also, my family has no history of Gestational diabetes, regular diabetes, and although I have a little bit of a sweet tooth at times, I've always eaten healthy and been well within except able weight for my height and get plenty of steps and exercise. I think gestational diabetes is just purely random.
I'm taking the 3 hr test right now. Failed the 1 hr by 1 point. I haven't eaten in 13 hours, and I've been awake the whole time (I work night shift). This time I had to drink a red fruit punch flavored drink, I felt a little nauseous 15 min after drinking it. But I feel okay now. I still have 2 more hours though, its so boring! The baby is super active since I drank it and he is kicking like crazy. Im so hungry and already decided I'm going straight to Chic fil a when I'm done!!
