I had my first appointment yesterday and found out I only get one ultrasound, the anatomy scan. A good friend who is a physician assistant in women's health thought this was really strange and suggested looking into other ob's in the area. Has anyone else had this experience??

Edit: The appointment yesterday was only to go over medical/family history, no exam until 12 weeks.
  • @court5608 My practice is typically the same way unless you choose to have the first trimester screening/ Ultrascreen testing (they use it to check for issues, seeing the nuchal translucency, etc.) That test is somewhere between 11-13 weeks roughly.

  • @ramoseecology Thanks for the input! We decided not to do the screening you mentioned. I guess I was just surprised that they would wait so long. I'll have to be patient!

  • @court5608 More and more doctors are heading that way. It came up a few months ago that those 3D ultrasounds, being done more often, (especially for vanity reasons) can cause dangers to the baby.

    https://www.wtsp.com/story/news/health/2015/03/31/3d-ultrasounds-fda/70540264/

In response to this finding, a lot of doctors have scaled back how many ultrasounds they do - weighing it against medical need. Most of the problems were arising from shops, like the ones you see in the mall, offering "prenatal portraits." Normal ultrasounds haven't been shown to be dangerous, and the effects of the others aren't totally known, but I think doctors have been heading towards better safe than sorry!

  • @Allisun85 thanks for the info! I appreciate it! The 3D/4D ones are so neat, they are tempting. My biggest concern is wanting to make sure the baby is growing as it should be, but I guess I don't have any reason to believe otherwise.
  • Just reading everyone's comments, am a little concerned, my dates work out to be due 27th August and we found out Xmas eve so I've called the doctor but I won't have a scan until Feb over here in the UK :( Is anyone else in the same boat?

I had my initial ultrasound at 6 weeks (if it works) I included the picture of our nugget. I go for my second ultrasound on January 7th and I'll be 10.5 weeks for that one.

  • Hi everyone!

This will be my 3rd baby! Can't believe it! My husband and I each have a son from a previous relationship and we have a 1 year old daughter together! This pregnancy was a bit of a surprise for us as we will now have 4 children 7 and under when this new addition comes!!!

I am due August 4th! (One day after our wedding anniversary)

Here is my little bean, ultrasound was 2 weeks ago, I am 9 weeks & 3 days today

  • I went for my first US last Tuesday. I thought I was 6w3d baby measured 6w4d! We saw the flicker of the heartbeat :-) the doc said it was too early to count the HB.. Not sure why because it looks like others had the heart rate this early? Maybe this machine was old?

I'm due August 30th and my first appt with the Dr to listen for heartbeat isn't until I'm 12w in February. With my DS, we didn't see the Dr for hb check until 11w. The only reason we had an u/s then was bc he was so low they couldn't find his hb with the regular monitor. I think it depends a lot on the Dr and your medical history.
  • Had my 1st OB appointment today!! Measured 7W and 5d. Heartbeat of 158.

  • Congrats @rikopy. Only fraternal twins are more likely in families that others in your family have twins. Identical twins are not!

  • This is my U/S at 6 wks 3 day!! Got to see the heartbeat and it was 128 BPM!! I'm thinking boy!! I'm 9 wks today!!
  • That was same for ours to the t
  • Went yesterday! I thought I was 8 weeks but actually 9 weeks 3 days! Due date was moved to August 6th! Question: did anyone's little one not really move a lot ?
  • First us today! Measured right on track at 6w5d...saw the heartbeat, but the doc wouldn't let us listen...according to her you have to wait till week 12 which I don't buy. I have another us on Thursday with the MFM doc, and I'm hoping I'll get to hear it then. Here's my little blueberry
  • We are 6w6 days but measuring 6w3d! Heart rate 124

  • Here is our LO. As usual there is always a little drama. Despite me charting this babe is measuring four days behind, so my OB tried to tell me I probably ovulated later than I thought and moved my due date to 08/26. While that is in the margin of error it is nerve wracking for me. Heart rate is 140 bpm. I already have an appointment with my perinatalogist for next Friday. Hopefully, this baby will have caught up.
  • @Jodiggity What a great scan--starting to look baby shaped now!

  • @ramoseecology thank you! I can't get over how much it's grown in 3 weeks:)
  • My first ultrasound is tomorrow! I can't sleep I'm so excited, I love all your pics!!! Congrats everyone :)
  • Had my first appointment today after experiencing some pain. Turns out the pain was from an ovarian cyst that my doctor said is perfectly normal during pregnancy. And our baby is measuring ahead! It's actually 8w1d instead of 7w6d like I thought. The little guy even wiggled for us!
