@hoodoll82 What formula do you use? I'm going to start supplementing with LO and I wanted to compare what you use to Nutramigen (sp). I'm hesitant to try a dairy based formula.

We use Similac Alimentum. I think it's essentially the equivalent of Nutrimagen. Some say Nutrimagen is more broken down but that might just be a rumor. It's expensive as hell but so is Nutrimagen I think. If your LO tested positive for an allergy then your pedi can ask insurance to cover, so I'd try that route if possible!

You can also try Gerber Soothe first which is a step down from Nutrimagen and Alimentum to see if your LO can handle it. I would recommend doing the hypoallergenic ones only if your doc says you need to!

  • @hoodoll82 Thanks! I think we're going to try Soothe first and see if it goes Ok. The plan is to do 2 oz formula and 4 oz bm for her 3 daytime bottles. Hopefully that will ease her into it.
  • Good luck! I think starting there is good. I wonder if we would have been better off trying soothe instead of jumping to alimentum - because now she has had trouble stepping "down". I think the doc might have been overzealous. That being said, if after 3-5 days of the mix your LO isn't tolerating it, I def recommend alimentum. We've had no issues!
  • I really hate one of the pediatricians at my practice. He was on call when we brought LO in today because of our feeding issues and after he went through everything about how he's not concerned because she's still gained weight even though she's not eating he asks "well you're feeding her 8oz a feeding right?" And DH goes uh no like 3-5 and he's like um That's not enough. YOU JUST SAID SHES GAINING FINE. AND SHES FAT. He did the same thing to me at 3 months and I stopped going to him because he clearly doesn't understand breastmilk.

  • Geez 8 ounces a feeding? LO would barf! We top out at 6, even if LO signals she wants more - I try to pace her. Ugh. Sorry @dancegurl1118!
  • ^^sorry about the annoying ped, sounds fruatrating. But thanks for the reminder.

Those who are still exclusively bf-ing/pumping, how many ounces is you LO getting each time, now at 6-7 months?

I'm sorry, i know this gets discussed pretty regularly, but sometimes it's not clear who's talking formula and milk. We're making changes to lo's schedule and I want to make sure I'm prepared for daycare next week. Thanks!

    I EP.

My peanut babies eat 7 oz in the morning. Then 4 or 5 oz each time after that. Usually 5 feedings a day, sometimes 6. They almost always finish each bottle, but sometimes not. Sometimes they cry for more, so we give them an ounce or 2 more. Purees usually once a day, sometimes twice. Total breast milk is 20-30 oz per day each, depending on the day.

  • @mindaa We have been bm only, just starting to supplement tomorrow. LO gets 6 ounces per bottle 3 times a day and 7 ounces for her first and last bottles of the day. Some nights I feed her around 4 or 5 am and I would guess she's eating 3-4 ounces at that feeding. So 32+ ounces a day.

We're getting close to trying 8 ounces at night. She hasn't seemed interested in more but I would love to push that 4 am feeding to 5 or 6 am.

^ LO gets three 5 oz breastmilk bottles while I'm at work. She also does a partial feeding at 5 am, and two full feeds after I get home. I nurse during those times, so not exactly sure how much she's taking. She seems to top off at 5 oz. Sometimes she'll whine for a little more, but when we give it to her she spits up. She's also a peanut, but gains weight fine.
  • I know I am not super helpful since I FF but we do about 32 ounces a day plus 2 small purée packs right now - at 7 months. Largest feed is 6 ounces in the morning and then other feeds are 4-6 ounces. Again she probably could eat more but we try to pace her due to her reflux.
  • My LO with breast milk tops out at 4.5 to 5oz bottle and usually only eats 3-4 ounces. I think this is common with breast feed babies. Now he has a formula bottle or two while I at work in addition to breast milk but they are still small bottles.

If I was starting daycare I'd stick with the 4-5 ounce bottles and just pack some extra 2 ounce portions just in case they aren't satisfied. I pump into 5-5.5 ounce bottles but DH always refeeds leftovers and that usually isn't allowed at daycare.

  • Yeah EP here (trying to quit though)
He is a huge chunk and we've been at 5 oz since 3 3-1/2 months
  • Yeah we do 3-6oz (whatever she will take, 6 is always available and our max warm up is 2x I don't care what the "guidelines" say). She eats every 2-3.5 hours and goes about 12 hours overnight without eating. Total varies from 23-30 oz a day.

  • My LO takes 3-5 ounces every 3 hours still. He was taking 5 ounces every feed and since I introduced solids a couple weeks ago he is now just taking 3-4. That ped sounds like a moron, sorry. 8 ounces? That's a crazy amount of breast milk.
  • I offer 6 but most times she only eats 4-5 (formula though).... I cry when I think of the waste lol

Now that she is eating solids she seems to really want to skip the bottles.
  • And we have solid poop . . . Gross!!

I was excited because I figured this means he's eating something but then again maybe its the formula? Would one day with two bottles of formula cause pasty big kid poop or can I credit solids?

Sorry for gross question. Maybe it can go unanswered. Can't decide if I really want to know. Breastfeeding poop is so much easier with cloth diapers. I can't wait until the day when I never have to deal with someone else's poop.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • We formula feed but also didn't have what I call solid poops until we started solids!
  • ^^ This is what I was hoping. We let him feed himself and poop is really the only way to tell if he's actually eating or just faking us out. He's had formula off and on for a month, enough to use up a small can and he's never had solid poop.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • We use formula, he eats 5 times a day, all 6oz bottles except the midday one, which is 5oz and he gets a small tub of baby food purée

I'm not sure if by 'solid' poops you mean like actual little turds, or poop the consistency of slightly looser clay (not really 'wet'). Because we have had the clay like poops since before solids, and our pedi attributed that to the formula. Now that we have started some purées, the clay is thicker, like playdoh. We still have an occasional really wet poop tho, even tho we are now 100% formula (or purée)

  • So my girl won't take a bottle. She used to, but a couple of months ago she simultaneously gave up pacifiers and bottles. She used to take a generic store brand formula, and I'm wondering if something tastier would entice her to take a bottle again. She exclusively nurses now, pumping is a no go, and she doesn't get sippy or straw cups yet. We've also tried a few different bottles and nipples, but I'm not going to invest a lot of money in this.

    (1) Is there a type of formula that is generally considered to taste better? I know some are supposed to taste worse.

    (2) What do we think about juice in bottles? It seems insane to me since I never even let my older kids have juice at home, but maybe just a little mixed with formula? Just to get her used to a bottle again? My sister's same-age baby sometimes drinks straight juice from a bottle, on their pediatrician's advice.
  • Even prune juice (just a tad) might flavor the bottle enough @ChardeeMacDennis
  • At night when we were "experimenting " with formula in hopes that it would help W sleep longer.... We used "similac sensitive" orange can and he never had an issue..... And all he had ever had was bm.
  • My supply has tanked again. Stress maybe? I guess it's a good thing we've already decided to supplement with formula with the intention of switching over the next few months. I'm relieved and sad and a little disappointed in myself. With DS, I never had supply or pumping issues. This time is just different I guess.

Good idea! She gets constipated too so that might help.

We also tried the liquid pre-mixed formula tonight but no luck.

Mine too. I got a nasty cold right before Christmas, so I'm chalking it up to that, but it hasn't rebounded yet.

I'm using my freezer stash to make it without formula for now. I have at least a month's worth of I keep using it at the same rate I am now. Hopefully my production will ramp up a little again so I can use it a little more sparingly.

  • Thanks all for the reassurance! Its just been so confusing when LO used to eat so comstantly. He's doing OK nursing 1/2 the number of times, but my instinct is to cram some huge bottles down him to make sure he keeps getting enough.
Thanks for confirming that's not necessary :)

Ugh, Sucks. Hope it's temporary. Don't beat yourself up.

@henrytviii - do you use liners with the diapers? (Makes poop a little easier). I'll confess that when LO poops a cloth diaper, I hose it off in the back yard. :* These low flow toilets are worthless and installing a sprayer just isn't priority.

  • Question for you ladies, if you follow a breakfast/lunch/dinner schedule with solids does your baby have a preference for a certain meal time?
My daughter snubs breakfast everyday. I've tried banana, avocado (favourite), savoury purées and even a rice cereal rusk in the hopes that she might accept something. She'll never take more then a couple bites and throw a fit. I'm wondering why?!
  • I find breakfast to be when lo eats the most. Lunch is rough. She doesn't eat more than a few bites. Dinner is better but breakfast still wins.
  • Since she's barely eating due to this teething saga our solids have come to a halt. I'd rather her drink fluids because anything going in her mouth hurts (we have tried all teething remedies). I wonder if I'm being detrimental by stopping the solids? She won't eat them anyway each time we tried this week.

  • @dancegurl1118 We paused while DH and I were sick and LO picked it back up with gusto after. Didn't seem to matter
  • Sometimes I think about quitting solids for a few weeks because he hates every single veggie we have tried...........we have to trick him with pears on the end of the spoon. Everyone in our life says "just keep trying" so here we are !

  • We stopped solids for a week while we were sick. Started again a few days ago and she's just fine.
  • So, all of a sudden my nipples are bleeding, wft?  Never happened when LO was a newborn, must be the dry, cool weather.

So, I think I'm overcompensating for my lack of bm freezer stash by filling the freezer with purees instead! Gotta slow down... he's going to outgrow purees pretty fast.

    Use it in smoothies later?
  • We have had to pause on solids too. Teething. I feel like even trying was doing more harm than good. He's nit interest. He's back to sitting with us a the table and gnawing on a spoon. Or cucumber stick or pineapple core.

  • We started "solids" on his 6 month birthday and tomorrow he's 7 months. This week, he's really started to go at them in a way he didn't before. Cold fruits and veggies seem to be his jam while teething (peeled apple and pear have been the only things he's ever cried about when taken away!).

Today he also loved cherry tomatoes after he took the first bite to pop them. The first bite, poor bug made the worst face I've ever seen on him. Obviously we took video because it was hilarious to see that face, then watch him scarf down the whole thing in like four bites (I hang on tight so he won't choke).

Gerber stage 1 squash was our first big win, last week.
  • ^^ I tried the squash. Pretty good actually
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • ^^^ I try everything before I give it. The squash is pretty good. I think that's why I haven't fed LO meat yet. I can't work up the nerve to try those.

I also finally bought him some of those teething biscuits. I got organic happy baby ones. He loves them. They dissolve in his mouth pretty quickly but he also keeps them towards the front and chews them. No teeth here yet. I wanted to give him a little piece of noodle last night but DH is too scared and said no.
  • We gave a chicken drumstick last night. That was a fav!
