going home clothes (for Mom) and bra question

I want to say I have seen a board with this part of my question discussed previously, but I can't locate it...I know we all have put thought into what our LO's will wear home, but what do my fellow Mamas plan to pack to go home in? I have a set of PJs that I really want to pack since jeans just don't sound comfy now (nevermind AFTER L&D), but because I'm sure my family will be taking pictures like crazy I was also considering a maxi dress. It's obviously not a fashion show, but I find myself packing, unpacking and repacking my hospital bag in these final weeks, just curious to see what others have planned to wear home :-)

Also, moms who are not going to BF, what are you doing as far as bras are concerned? I'm not able to BF our daughter but as a FTM I'm not sure how my breast will feel when the milk comes in and how soon it comes in... I'm not sure if I should purchase a nursing bra for the comfort factor since my maternity and pre-pregnancy bras may be too constricting and uncomfortable? Not sure what to expect and what to buy/pack! Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance ladies! :-)

Re: going home clothes (for Mom) and bra question

  • I'm going to be nursing this time (fingers crossed) but didn't nurse my DD. I'd recommend a sports bra for those few days of engorgement til your milk dries up.

For the hospital I have a comfy pajama outfit for the day after he is born (pants, cami, light cardigan) and for going home I'll have workout pants and a tee shirt ;) pictures or no pictures, I did just have a baby and comfort means more to me than looks at that point. Also considering all the blood and that last time I had to change pants a few times

  • I bf all my children and I will with this baby as well. I never wore nursing bras. I wore regular bras or sports bras. Sport bras did keep everything all together :). I've worn jeans, a tee and other times just yoga pants when it was time to go home. In the hospital I always just worn any types of yoga pants, pajamas or sweat pants.
  • When I went into labor, I was wearing a white maternity t-shirt and yoga pants + a zip-up sweatshirt. I wore the same pants home (immediately changed into a hospital gown, so they were still pretty clean) and a white nursing shirt + the same zip-up sweatshirt. VERY exciting.  :D

I do recommend getting some nursing bras (I actually have to wear them in pregnancy because underwire really bothers my ribs). I like the Bravado brand.
  • Last time I wore loose fitting work out pants, a tee shirt and big hoodie home. DS was born in January and since this one will be a winter baby also, I'll plan on wearing the same thing. And hope it's not below zero that day, lol. I will also be bring a nursing bra this time. I'd didn't last time ( no idea why, maybe I forgot)

  • Last time I came home in some yoga pants and t shirt but I didn't have anyone taking pictures and such. I can see how you may want to look a little more put together for pictures.
As far as nursing bras go, with my first (I BFed), I used a couple of wireless nursing bras during my maternity leave, but mostly, I was in nursing tanks, which I found to be more comfortable. When it was time to get back to work (about 12 weeks after) is when I purchased a bunch of proper underwire nursing bras and I am glad I waited because my bra size changed; not only the cup size which got bigger but the actual circumference size dropped by 2 within a couple of months after giving birth.
For you, I would suggest looking into nursing tanks (with built in support) for comfort, for after the birth (and you can continue to use it as a tank top later). You may also need some leak pads until your milk stops producing.

To help your milk dry up I would recommend wearing 1-2 sports bras a size smaller than normal. You actually want your breasts constricted.

  • Thanks ladies!!! I was thinking about packing yoga pants but in earlier pregnancy I found them to be really tight and uncomfortable (since I don't have a maternity pair). I'm thinking I'll pack the PJs and the flowy dress and just wear whatever is more comfy the day of discharge. Luckily, I'm in FL so I don't have to worry too much about the weather as far as cold is concerned

I didn't even think about using a sports bra!! I will pack one just to be safe. I've been told that the milk coming in is very painful so I wasn't sure what would be best. I received some breast pads at my shower and a nursing tank when I thought I could BF so I will pack those too. Glad I didn't return them!
  • I didn't breastfeed with my first but hope to with my second. I wore sweatpants, tshirts and a hoodie to the hospital and changed as soon as I got there and wore the same thing home. I stayed in the hospital gowns the two and a half days I was there last time. That way I didn't have to worry about bleeding through my pants. I did wear a housecoat when people came to visit. I wore my regular bra there and home. Once at home I started wearing sports bras. My milk didn't come in until I was gone for several days. The nurse did recommend avoiding hot showers if you aren't going to breastfeed. My boobs hurt but nothing more than the pain I had in the first trimester when my milk came in and dried up. I would not recommend jeans---soft comfy clothes. No one expects you to be dressing to impress right after having a baby.

  • Ok so reading this I have a follow up question.

If you're planning on being in the hospital for about 2 days after L&D, how many pants/sweatpants/pj pants (whatever) should you bring (cuz ya know . . . bleeding . . .)? Or does it just make sense to stick with wearing hospital gowns until you go home?

I definitely plan on just my comfy maternity yoga pants and a t-shirt & sweatshirt (plus whatever layers February in VT winds up requiring this year) for actually going home.

@Kimbarbour08 I personally packed a night gown for after L&D. only because I found a cute one on sale that matches our daughters outfit lol her room and reviving blankets and everything is all pink, gray and elephants so I couldn't resist when I saw it!

Maybe pack a nightgown encase you want to change out of the hospital gown, but I wouldn't recommend pants. seems like it would be a hassle with bleeding and if medically necessary, it wouldn't work well following an emergency c-section (but I'm a worry-wart who thinks ahead for things like this).

Side note though, if you plan to BF, the hospital gown may be easiest, unless you get a nursing nightgown. My cousin BF and she stayed in her hospital gown the whole two days to make feedings easier.

  • @summererdvig thanks for the tips! I do have a couple nursing nightgowns I got on sale, so maybe I'll bring one (but I don't want to ruin them right off the bat so not sure . . . ) since I do plan to BF.

    Thanks again!
  • if you're not planning to breastfeed, I would recommend a sports bra.  I know it will be uncomfortable for a few days, but it will help with getting your milk to dry up quicker.  The less stimulation and more constriction you have, the better it is.

  • I wore a jersey knit skirt (cheap from old navy) and loose fitting maternity tee home with DD and will this time, even though it will be cold. I wore it with a robe most of the time in the hospital, too, because it was more comfortable than having something tighter on my hips, crotch, or super swollen legs.

  • I can't decide!  Last time, I wore a maxi dress, simply for comfort, but it was also August!  I had a c-section and didn't want anything touching the scar!  I'm thinking about buying some comfy pjs this time in a dark color and probably a tshirt and sweatshirt since it'll be cold.   I definitely wore a nursing bra the entire time I was in the hospital and plan on doing the same this time also.
