how much is your LO sleeping?

My little Elliot Jane is 5 weeks old and I feel like she sleeps ALL day! We do her last feeding at midnight and lately she's been sleeping until around 5:30 am. We feed her again and go back to bed until about 9. After her 9 o'clock feeding we open the curtains, get her out of her pjs, do a bath if it's bath day, and get her dressed. She's awake maybe 2 hours then back asleep. She's exclusively on breast milk. I EP and during the day we wake her every 3 hours to eat. It takes forever to eat 3.5 ounces. Usually she takes about an hour to get through her bottle. Falling asleep several times, we change her diaper during the middle of the bottle to try and get her up. I went to Dr. Google and read that a 5 week old should be awake up to 10 hours a day. This got me worried! Just wondering how old your LO is and how often they sleep.

  • Haha I worry about this all the time too. My LO still sleeps a ton during the day, and he is 9 weeks old!
  • My first only woke up to eat and slept the rest of the day for over the first month. I asked my pedi about it and he said so long as he was waking to eat it is fine he can sleep as much as he wants.
This LO had never been awake 2 hours straight and she is 2 months old today.

  • My LO is awake most of the day, takes a few cat naps here and there. Go to bed around 9 and she's up every 2-3 hours to eat. Goes right back to sleep tho and usually up for the day around 8.

Babies as young as ours should not have long wake periods. This article has a chart detailing how long they should be awake. I did a lot of reading on sleep because my son wasn't napping. Reading up on baby sleep has helped me to look for my almost 8 week olds tired cues. Most of the time he needs help asleep, but it doesn't look like you have that issues.
  • No way my 8 week old is awake 10 hours a day, maybe 6? I don't keep track, but she eats every two to three hours unless she's going through a growth spurt, then it's like every 45 minutes to an hour (like tonight!) and snoozes in between
  • I thought for sure that did not sound right! Thanks ladies :)
  • Z is 9 weeks and sleeps a lot still. I vote normal.

  • Lol mine must be defective, she's awake all the time. Unless she's in my arms. She does a big (2-3 hour) snooze after lunch, then again after dinner, then again from about 10p to 2a (which is the only one I can put her down for). That's about it these days. That's not nearly enough sleep, I guess all the tiny cat naps make up the rest, but they're so short I have a hard time adding them up.
  • My LO likes to be awake most of the morning. When I try to get him to nap I maybe get 30 min and he's back up. Then the past 2 days he's been taking a 3-4 hr nap in the afternoon, then will sometimes take a 2-3 hr nap a few hrs before bed. The last 5 days he's been up at 5am to eat and after that he's up. For the life of me I can't get him to sleep until 7, which was our original wake up time. I'm getting tired of being up at 5am for the day everyday!
  • I feel like my kid has a major case of FOMO. Like he thinks we're going to take down the ceiling fan he loves to stare at if he goes to sleep. I'm fairly certain I spend more time trying to get him to sleep than he actually sleeps. (But I know he needs to sleep because he's fussy and yawning all over the place)
  • @rachswi what is it with ceiling fans? Nine stares at it all day! Even if it's not moving.

  • @rachswi my kid is the same way. It takes twice as long to get him to sleep than he actually sleeps.
  • @SweetTooth126 right? Our fan has never been on. But it's a dark wood and our ceiling is white so it's pretty big contrast. I find it funny that he would rather stare at the nonmoving fan than our Christmas tree full of pretty lights. Must not be enough contrast for him yet.

And @cdepperschmidt - seriously took 1.5 hours to get him to fully nap this morning and then he woke up after 30 minutes because he was hungry again! Then he had a poopsplosion and needed a bath. Fun morning.
  • I really doubt there is a normal! All 3 of my babies have been so different. Ds1 was textbook. DD was a bloody nightmare lol barely slept ever, god knows how she managed to grow?!? DS2 is shaping up to be a good one so far but at 7.5 weeks who knows...
  • I wish my son slept like that at night. .he's still up every 2-3 hours all day and night like clockwork. ...he's 10 weeks
  • My lo does not usually nap during the day unless we're out. He wakes up every 2 hrs at night, he's sometimes up for 2-3 hrs at a timr at night unable to go to sleep I think sometimes due to gas pain, just wants to feed.
  • Any tips on getting LO down at night? It takes me forever and I'm getting real tired of doing this every night.

It doesn't always work, but our routine is bath and/or pj's, swaddle, reading while feeding, then cuddling and down in the pnp with white noise. Took a few weeks to find the right combo, and I've had to switch it up a few times, but for now it works more often than not. Keep trying new things till you find the right routine then stick with it until it stops working!

Similar to others, we do warm bath (alternating nights w soap), clean diaper and PJs, mom sings two songs, read a book, feed well, swaddle, rock for ~10 mins, place in crib. The process takes from 8:00 until right around 9:00 (sometimes about 10 mins prior). We also try to cut the evening nap short (no more than 45 mins) if he falls asleep after his dinner feed. If he sleeps too late in the evening, he wakes earlier in the night. With our routine, he typically stays down until btwn 2 and 3 (so he's getting a 5-6 hour stretch).

  • Well today LO refused to nap yet again. He took one 10 min nap (if you even want to call it that) and a 30 min nap. Then he slept from 5-8, got a diaper/Jammie change and a bottle and went back to sleep. BUT, he slept until 3:30 am! He just ate 5oz and passed back out. So I'm hopefully we might get past 6am for his wake up time.

Odd thing though, he's a grunty baby before he usually wakes up for a bottle/diaper when he sleeps but tonight he would grunt/kick but never opened his eyes, then he'd settle back down. Then eventually at 3:30 he started to whimper and his eyes were open. Sadly I can't see inside the PNP from my bed due to space so I had to keep getting up to check to see if he was up as this is the longest stretch of night sleep he's gone.
  • Clearly there is all kind of babies... And it changes fast too. Since week 3 she had been sleepong 5-6hours stretch at night, and beautiful 3hours nap during the day, but the last 3 days she now awakes every 1-2 hours during the day.... I am just happy she kept her big strech at night !
She has been having long calm awake time since week 2 - usually after her bath in the morning, from 9 to 12she is awake like 2 to 3 hours, and in the evenings, from 7 to 10pm, she is observing. We are having dinner next to her and we have a conversation lol.

I just wish she would sleep by longer stretch during the day to get things done :)

Surprisingly, my baby sometimes doesn't want arms to go to sleep. I lay him down on his side with the pacifier in his mouth and pat his bottom. A few minutes later he's out and I turn him face up.

  • @rubirubi89 Elliot doesn't always want held either. She likes to lay on her belly to go to sleep. I sit right beside her and as soon as she's asleep I turn her over and if it's night time I swaddle her and put her in her RNP.
  • Little man has been fighting sleep like its his job these last few days. He's so tired but he will not sleep. He screams and fusses and has bags under his eyes but just will not go to sleep. And once I finally get him to sleep he wakes up for no apparent reason after 20-30 minutes. Last night he thankfully got 5 hours because I would put my hand on him to calm him when he stirred so that he wouldn't wake himself up completely. I'm so stinking tired. It's like he senses when I'm about to fall asleep because 3 times today I've gotten him down and I tried to lay down too then he is suddenly awake and fussing again.

...and of course because it's Sunday, DH has spent most of the day watching football rather than help me get LO to sleep. :S
  • @rachswi I saw this thing on Pinterest tonight about filling a glove with beans/rice and heating it in the microwave and then swapping them out once they fall asleep. Of course your LO seems to know all the tricks!
  • I've thought about it but I'm afraid it would be too heavy and cause lo problems with breathing. Which I already freak out about since he only sleeps on his stomach :/
  • Maybe try putting it more towards his butt?
  • After 3 to 4 hours awake, for om 7 to 11pm, including 3 feedings, grunting, gas, cries and playtime she sleeps 6 to 7 hours at night. Followed by another 2 to 3 hours nap. But she was already sleeping 5 hours at 3 weeks during the night (we are currently in her 6th week). I just wish her gas did not bother her so much.... Seems like not many of the babies here push hard to get them out...
  • Hallelujah, we are working on our 4th nap today! 5th if you count the 20 min catnap this morning. Looks like he is getting back into his nap flow and hasn't been a cranky pants at all today! Please Lord let this continue!
  • @smnewby mine is the same way, he cries and cries and the only thing that will console him is walking him around the house, but that lasts maybe 20 min then he's back to crying. Today is the first day since Christmas he has napped like he used to! I'm hoping he keeps going, just have to keep my MIL away so she doesn't undo his schedule again.

Lol. My mil is the worst over-stimulator! She is supposed to be our childcare starting next week when I return to work! She is coming over tomorrow for a dry run and I am hoping she heeds my warnings! I will feel bad for lo if she doesnt...then again maybe it would be a one and done lesson for mil!

Same here. DD recently started bawling if she's awake for more than an hour during the day. She just gets so tired so quickly.
  • @snewbaby oh geesh! Yeah I think once she has to deal with an overstimulated baby for 8 hrs her tune will change! Good luck!
  • Since about 3 weeks(give or take a bad night in the mix) DD usually feeds and is up from 9-11pm sometimes 12. Then she sleeps until 5am up for a feed and then back down until 8-9am. Sometimes she throws me for a curve ball and stays up from 5-8 and then goes back down. She's usually up for an hour to two and then naps for 2-3 hours sometimes longer/shorter. We really are all over the place during the day and she does whatever she wants. I try not to push a schedule yet as is seems pointless but I'm such a planner type person it's taken a lot of adjusting.
  • Okay, I have a sleep question and this seems as good a place as any to ask.

I know they say never wake a sleeping baby, and I've gone by that since he regained his birth weight. But for the past three nights he's gone to bed at 8 as usual and has slept until between 6:30 and 7:30. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about this sleeping through the night thing, but my friend was trying to scare me with this story of a friend she had having a baby hospitalized for low blood sugar because he slept all day and wasn't waking up to eat. Now, I think that's a little different than sleeping all night, but it did get me a little concerned that this may be too long without food for him. Every day he's woken up in the morning full of energy, this morning he woke up smiling and making happy baby noises. His diaper output is good, and he does seem to be eating more during the day to compensate for no middle of the night feeding. But I just want to see what you all think, is it bad for me to let him sleep that long?
