  • @JessHeppell I'm sorry I missed this thread, happy belated birthday lady!! I hope you were able to make it special with lo. :)
  • @JessHeppell nice bag! I doesn't even really look like a diaper bag at all!

  • ^^Super jealous. If there was dunkin donuts here I'd be right there with you.

  • Mmm dunkin donuts. I wish there was anything open today. I'm super bored home alone with only LO and small town means that nothing is open. I've considered going for a walk, but its pretty cold outside today and while I wouldn't mind him being outside for a little bit, I'd feel bad having him out there for any length of time that warrants the severe bundling I'd have to put him thru.

  • ^^ We just got back from the zoo. My solution to feeling cooped up every Christmas. I'd bundle him up and go out, it makes the day so much better to just go out. He'll probably enjoy it too. Any outdoor lights around? We took our kids out to look at light yesterday and LO was actually the one that dug it. Since its dark so early . . .

  • Not sure where to post this. I have been lurking since lo was born, but haven't quite got up the courage to post anything. I need someone to talk to and my husband, as supportive as he is, focuses on talking me down and that isn't helping right now.

I have had what I wanted to believe was just a clogged duct, but nothing I tried wasn't helping. We have been traveling (my parents, then my in laws). While at my in laws it started to feel beyond just the uncomfortable I had been feeling, so we went to the ER and was prescribed antibiotics. I was told to come back if it wasn't better in a day or two.

I feel even worse today. I am scared that this means I have a abscess and not just mastitis. I am scared of needing surgery to clear this.

After the struggle I had starting out breastfeeding I really hoped all would go mostly smoothly until we decided to wean. (Thank you to all who do post on here, because you helped me a lot in the early days)

By the way, sorry this was so long.

How long ago did you go to the ER? Are you home now or still traveling?

I'd probably go back to the doctor, either your own or maybe urgent care in the town you're in. Maybe you need a stronger dose of meds.

I'm not a doctor or any sort of medical professional, but I think antibiotics take a little bit to kick in. If you just started them, I don't think it's that weird that you don't feel better just yet. If you've been on them a few days, you might need a higher dose?

Mastitis sucks. I felt like I had the flu.

Keep us posted, and welcome to the board!

Started antibiotics just over 24 hours ago at this point. I was under the impression that I should see progress by now. I wouldn't expect it to fully clear up quite yet.

We are traveling home currently and the plan at the moment is to try to ER at home after we arrive.

Yeah, I don't know about the medical details. Dr Google says "you should see improvement within 24-48 hours," on a general search of "how long do antibiotics take to work." ER or Doctor when you get home is wise. But I wouldn't worry too much about it being worse than mastitis.

  • Yes 24-48 hours. If you have increasing pain, spreading redness or fever greater than 101 I would return sooner. Are you saying the clogged duct feels worse or you are feeling worse (mastitis symptoms). The duct may not clear in 24 hours. Antibiotics won't clear the duct, just treat/prevent infection. I'd start taking lecithin supplements to help unclog too.

The clog was feeling worse, this morning it was feeling like it was moving into my armpit area and extra uncomfortable to even lift my daughter.

It has felt a little better after getting a better feeding then we had been when I got home, but she has started to refuse to eat on that side periodically as well
  • @dmcoral I have not had to deal with a clogged duct, but maybe @dancegurl1118 can give you some pointers? (Sorry to throw you out there, dancegurl, but I remember you had lots of good tips) I feel like I remember heat, lecithin, and lots of nursing were recommended, but I could be incorrect there

  • @dmcoral Welcome!! Melly is pointing you in a good direction. Is there a lactation consultant to talk to in your area? They could assess and give advice without jumping to extremes like a doctor might. I used Sunflower lecithin and it definitely helped.

Oh and congrats on sticking with the breastfeeding. Hopefully you can get through this hurdle too.

I get lots of clogged ducts. Like weekly for almost 6 months. Massage in a hot shower, lecithin capsules, nurse on that side first. I also get milk blisters that make them worse. Do you have a white/yellow looking dot on your nipple? That could be an issue too. Kellymom has really great information on clogged ducts! Good luck!

    Eta: kellymom is a website
  • Part of what has me worried/ confused this time is I have had clogged ducts before, but they always came with a blister in the past. I have yet to see one this time.

I have tried chest compressions in a warm shower, while nursing or pumping. Also just nursing more on that side, and a warm compress.

There are lactation consultants, but I haven't had much luck with them in the past.

@jessieR358, @janit368. How much lecithin do you use?
  • I took 2 capsules two times a day for maintenance for a while. I would have to ask dr Google on how much for a clogged duct.
  • Hi @dmcoral! Resident clogged duct expert here (unfortunately). It seems like you've tried all the normal "go-to" interventions. When I get them they are usually so painful that LO even being next to them or touching my breast hurts. I've only had one milk blister with my 937473 clogged ducts so it's not usually the cause for me. I now take some Advil, pump leaning over (I EP now, stopped EBF due to chronic clogged ducts) and it's usually gone within 48 hours. I also use the sticky hot pads for muscle aches on my breast overnight to trap the heat. When I was still BF I found gravity feeding on all 4's with baby's chin toward the clog helped to break it up, and excruciating massage in the shower sometimes with an electric toothbrush. I really think gravity feeding helped the best.

I wish you luck...clogged ducts SUCK. I'm nervous for your experience at an urgent care as OB's tend to have limited knowledge on BF and breast care, let alone urgent care docs...

    Please keep us updated.

@dmcoral I used this which wasn't in capsule form. Took about a teaspoon a day which was less then the recommended amount. We got through it and I don't need to use anymore

Edited to say I used a lot of heat and massage too
  • @dmcoral Sometimes they do take a while to clear and if you did have mastitis you may be feeling the remnants of the infection and swelling, it doesn't necessarily mean a clog. I have mastitis 7 times if I'm counting correctly with my first and a lot of those I couldn't associate with a real clot. The hard red sport would be there but not so much a clot or milk blister. Had lots of those too! The hurt in the armpit often happened after mastitis and that trauma. If you think its still a really clog you could try hot compresses and then nurse over the baby on you hands and knees. This really works. What you are describing sounds like soreness though, can you feel filled milk ducts?

In addition to antibiotics, tons of rest really helped me with mastitis. Can you get in bed and stay there for 12-24 hours? Don't stress or despair about an abscess. It won't help and they are exceedingly rare.

My little ones often didn't want to nurse on the mastitis breast once it healed. Its production would be low and I think sometime was different in the first few days it was healing.

  • Thanks everyone for you advice and support. I am feeling a little bit better this morning. Last night we were able to make some progress with reducing some of the firmness. Still a ways off normal, but it is giving me a lot more hope.

I am trying to get off work today so I can focus on nursing.

Last night I started taking lecithin, and applied a warm compress while sleeping. I also let my husband try to clear it. He had found the suggestion online, and even though it was kind of awkward, I willing to try just about anything at that point.
  • So the bumps's thread had me curious, what are some NY resolutions? I was cleaning out some paperwork from my desk at work and I found my 2015 resolutions and I only made 1 out of 5. Time to make some more realistic ones this year.

    1) lose 30lbs by being more active and cleaning up my diet.
    2) watch less tv and read more
    3) clean up my spending habits
    4) take better care of my appearance (translation, put some effort in!)
    5) travel somewhere new
  • Get organized and lose weight.... Those are my standard yearly resolutions....
  • Not sure where to put this but has anyone lowered the crib mattress yet... I am thinking we will do it soon.

We are in the middle height right now.
  • @ElRuby Not yet but our ped brought it up at the 6 mo.appt since I have an early mover. We'll probably wait until we see an attempt at pulling up out of laziness.
  • She isn't able to get to the sit position but I am assuming we are close... I will put it on DH to do list for tomorrow...
  • ^^ped told me to do it at her 6mo appointment. She said "you don't want to discover that they have learned to pull themselves up one night with the crib mattress still up"

Stupid question.. Do you put it all the way down?

ETA: Dr. Google answered - and the answer is yes.
  • Ok we just moved it two down.... There is one more hole left for when she is apparently 12 lol....my back is going to hurt!

Probably shouldn't do this but we have 2 mattresses in the crib so it was high enough for me to reach.. I even used dd's stool when I had to put her down asleep! I will take the one mattress out soon I guess.
Eta- she isn't close to the top. My fiancé didn't use the instructions for the crib since he knew how to do it from dd. Well I though the setting could go higher but apparently not.
  • We lowered our crib the other night. I didn't think to research crib mattress height when we bought our crib and so ours only has 2 heights. Top or bottom. I feel like he's sleeping on the ground. It's super low but that's the only option. @hudson202 that's exactly what my mom told me so we lowered it.
