Re: Official Labor Watch Thread (L&D questions, concerns, and announcements)

  • I got the reading while I was at the doctor. After she took it, she asked several times if the baby was still moving a lot and reminded me about counting movements. That is sort of why I got concerned.
That would worry me too :( I don't have any experience personally, so hopefully someone else here can give you some insight. I hope all is well and maybe she was just being a sleepyhead!

I will be 40 weeks tomorrow! My baby's has been between 120-130 the past couple of weeks. My doc said its normal for the baby's heart rate to slow some the last few weeks as they start running out of room in there :)

I have a question. I had an appointment today and am 1cm dilated and her head is "very low." All of that was great news to me. The part that I am questioning though is that her heart rate was 120 when it has never read lower than 150 before today. Anyone have experience with the fetal heart rate slowing down in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy? I don't know if I should be concerned.

My midwife told me any baseline above 110 is normal

Hi, I don't post often, but I just wanted to let you know that a heart rate between 120-160 bpm is considered normal. Also, as you get closer to delivery it is common for the heart rate to get a touch slower as it will be eventually on the outside.

  • Well had an ultrasound today at 38w exactly and baby is measuring 8lb9oz. The lady did the belly measurement literally 6 times and when I asked how off the measurement could be, she said only a couple ozs because she took it so many times and it was still getting the exact same thing. My appt with actualy doctor isn't until tomorrow and I'm pretty worried she will start talking induction, though at this point I really don't want baby to get any bigger if I have a hope of med free birth. I really want to let baby come when he's ready but it seems like his body is ready now but maybe mine isn't? I'm mostly terrified this will lead to a section. Any body else get induced because of baby's size this early?

P.s- no idea where I'm at as far as cervix progress, I have turned down all my cervix checks because I just wasn't that curious and I didn't want to be told I was completely tight and closed and nowhere near being ready. So not sure how that plays into the induction.
  • I'll be 40 weeks tomorrow. Had my membranes stripped last week at 39 weeks which clearly didn't work, had it done again today praying it works and I go into labor this week because they scheduled induction for a week from today, really don't want to do that!
  • I am currently 39 weeks + 4 days, woke up this morning with some lower back & abdominal pain. I have been a generous 3 cm dilated 70% effaced for the past 2 weeks. I wiped away some pink tinged mucous like discharge this morning which I assume is the bloody show. I've been tracking contractions all day they are getting more intense now and come anywhere from 5 -12min apart. Definitely can't walk these off so that's how I know they are different from the Braxton hicks contractions I have had in the past. My water hasn't broken yet so I'm trying to hold off until they contractions get even closer....should I go into the hospital and get checked out just to be on the safe side?? FTM here not sure if I should keep waiting it out or not.
  • My MW suggests 5-1-1. Regular contractions 5 minutes apart last 1 minute for 1 hour. It wouldn't hurt to call LD line just to see what they say though!

My doctor has always asked me to come in if I have more than 5 an hour especially if they progressively get worse. FTM so I have no idea, some even say they wished they had waited longer at home because they just waited at the hospital and they would've rather been at home. But being my first I would want to be there early even if I am bored and more uncomfortable just so I know everything is going okay
  • I'm 36 weeks today - has anyone been diagnosed with preeclampsia in late pregnancy? I've been having issues with weight gain and swelling and high bp for myself and my doctor just now decided to listen to me after my bp got scary high and I gained 12 lbs in 2 weeks... She did tell me it was preeclampsia but didn't tell me any plan or precautions I should be taking.
  • My midwife said 5-1-1 as well. Five minutes apart, one minute long for one hour. However, I went in before that because I knew things were happening fast. Most of my contractions were only 30 to 45 seconds. But I felt like I NEEDED to be at the birth center. I was still able to talk through contractions until I was actively pushing. Baby came two hours after we arrived. My midwife was quite surprised.
  • @maddisonwallace pre-e can be diagnosed before and even after delivery. The biggest concern is kidney and/liver failure for you and issues with the placenta functioning properly for baby. So long as you aren't spilling protein in your urine, your organs should be functioning properly. I'd be asking for a 24 hr urine collection and a blood draw to be on the safe side. This is typical protocol for my OB office with elevated bp. If your baby has been measuring fine either by ultrasound or fundus, the placenta should be doing great as well and baby should be getting everything he/she needs from you to grow big and healthy. During delivery, ask if a magnesium drip is necessary for you. Magnesium helps prevent seizures due to high bp-it'll probably make you feel like complete crap but you'll be safe from seizing. I hope this helps! I'm a ftm but am high risk for developing pre-e so I've had this talk with my dr from the very beginning of the pregnancy. Good luck and just try to relax as much as possible!

Thank you so much!!! My mom had pre-E also. They've been watching me for a while, so to be on the safe side I've been taking a magnesium supplement already so that's comforting. All measurements are normal, I've done the 24 hour collection and there was no protein, so another positive. I guess what was most concerning to me was what in the world do you do this late in the game other than just hope for the best? Pre-e is a scary thing to just say "well hope this turns out okay!!" About.. But I'm glad my symptoms seem to be on the mild side of things
  • For induction I've been told by midwife to hook up the tens machine (if you have one) and use for 2 hours minimum from 37 weeks. If it doesn't induce it increases your pain threshold for labour which has got to be a bonus?! I'm 36 weeks today and fairly fed up but can wait a little longer. X
  • I've been having prodromal labor for a week now and I'm so over this. They get pretty painful and then they stop. Couldn't sleep until 2 am last night and then woke up at 7:15 when they returned. Plus last night I had my husband tell me it was too stressful for him to watch me in that much pain and that he didn't think I could handle labor since I have to breath thru the painful contractions. Not scream mind you, just breathe thru them. I feel so alone now. I don't know if I even want him in the delivery room. I just wish she would come so I could get this over with.

  • @MammaDoc, that wasn't a very supportive thing for him to say to you. :( I hope he either comes around soon and apologizes and/or finds a better way to say what he's feeling, because that was downright mean.

You sound really frustrated and obviously are exhausted at this point, but hang in there! I know you can do this and that when the big day is finally here you are going to be a rockstar! ;)

My high risk doctor last pregnancy was buddies with one of the best ultrasound doctors (I'm assuming he was one of the doctors doing anatomical ultrasounds or something. I don't remember what his actual practice was) and that guy was off his own baby's measurements by 2 lbs. If you really don't want to be induced, I would push back. They might be right and you might need it, but make sure you're confident of that before you agree to something you don't want. I needed interventions I didn't want last pregnancy and feeling confident in the reasoning behind them made me feel comfortable getting them. You can also try some natural things to hurry labor if you do need it, like membrane stripping, sex, nipple stimulation, etc.

Sorry that doesn't actually answer your question.
  • Had another exam today and baby is still a 'little high' but I am 50% effaced and not dilated :/ They are going to do an ultra sound on Thursday to check his fluids, etc.  Due date is Friday but it is not looking promising that he will be here then.
Getting a little annoyed - More so at people asking me constantly if there is a baby yet.  The constant texts/messages are super annoying.

Thank you very much for this. I'm so frustrated and have been crying off and on all morning. The contractions are painful again this morning but not regular or closer together. I'm going to try and go shopping and for a long walk to see if it helps.

  • @mg137 Thank you so much for answering. I know I need to be 100% positive with any decision and I reallllly don't want an induction but I have a diagnosis of GD( my sugars have been well under control) and I know that can lead to large babies so I'm worried if I try to wait he will get really big. I'm trying to tell myself that ultrasounds can be so off but it's really hard thinking about having him be any bigger if it is correct and dealing with the complications from being so large. I guess I'm not really sure what I'm looking for as far as answers, just someone who's induced for this reason and their outcomes?
  • @MollyA1011 - this is exactly me right now! I don't think I've had anything happen so far (bh, bloody show, mucus plug, etc) and baby is still sitting up very high! I just think he's really comfy in there and doesn't plan on vacating soon! I'm going tomorrow to get checked so hopefully there will be some improvement from the 0cm dilated, 0% effaced at 37 weeks last week! If not, I guess I'm in for the long haul and will just use this extra time to get some more stuff (i.e. Freezer meals) done before he gets here! I can't wait though - I just want to hold him and kiss his little face!!
  • @Ljohn43 I'm in the same exact boat as you, haven't had any of the things you mentioned, I'm 39 weeks - also get to see if I made any progress from my 0 dilation tomorrow.
  • @ChrissyD1203 - glad to hear it's not just me! I'm at 38 on the dot today. It's hard when I'm reading all the awesome birth announcements not to wish it was my turn!! I know our babies "will come when they're ready though" I just wish mine would start making his way to the exit!! :)
  • @Ljohn43 hoping we both get some positive dilation news at our appointments tomorrow (even if it doesn't mean anything about when labor is actually coming, mentally it will make me happy)
  • 38w6d today. I went in for my appointment and doctor said I was at 2cm and very soft. He stripped my membranes (holy mother of Mary!) And said usually labor starts within 48hrs of that. I'm so ready to be done! I've been crampy since and have had a few contractions this evening. So hoping they become regular and she comes out! I have a 12hr work day ahead of me tomorrow and the next day so I'm really hoping she decides this tonight or tomorrow night. I'd much rather not go into labor while dispatching at an ambulance company. Haha! Any STMs with stripping advice? This is #2 for me, but I wasn't even checked at appts with DD1 before I went into labor. Lol. This is new to me.
  • Random but does anyone still throw up? Almost every time after I eat I do. It's frustrating and L&D says its normal. My stomach contracts every time I do and it's painful!!! I stay hydrated but it is disturbing of course. I'm only 35 and 5 days.....

Anyone have thoughts on Castor Oil (for induction after DD)?

I have no experience with it (ftm), but my friend did not speak well of her experience with castor oil with her first baby...she said she "definitely will not do that again" (think lots of uncomfortable cramping and pooping before, during, and even after labor)... I guess it depends how desperate you get though! If I go past 40 I may be willing to try anything at that point!!
  • I'm 38w4d and have been 50% effaced and 1cm dilated for 2 weeks. My doctor has offered to strip my membranes next week, but I was reading about it online and saw that it may be risky for moms who are positive for strep B (which I am). I'm a FTM. Has anyone had their membranes stripped while positive for strep B?
  • Anyone have thoughts on Castor Oil (for induction after DD)?

    It's dangerous and not recommended.
  • @MelissaA225 I was strep b positive with my first and had my membrane stripped with no problem at all.

Yeah, I had a friend do it for a home birth and swears by it but sounds sketchy. Just was wondering if anyone had any stories, etc.

Do not use it. It can cause your baby to have a BM in utero and that is very dangerous.
