Trying to Get Pregnant

Will this really help?

I unfortunately lost my second pregnancy on Sunday after a first miscarriage early in November.  My OB office was able to get me in for an appointment yesterday and I met with a doctor who put my mind at ease.  He said we could wait for a 3rd miscarriage to do testing or he could start the treatment typically started after a 3rd miscarriage anyway.  He said it's great that I was able to get pregnant so quickly, now it's just a matter of supporting the early pregnancy as best we can.  He also thought that I only knew about the last pregnancy because we were trying, otherwise I would have just thought my period was late due to the last miscarriage.  As soon as I find out I am pregnant again he's starting me on progesterone, baby aspirin, and a higher does of folic acid.  Has anyone had any experience with these 3 treatments?  Any success?

Re: Will this really help?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I too had a very early MC in November. I don't have any experience with progesterone, baby aspirin or higher doses of folic acid but I think those are fairly common ways to add extra support during early pregnancy. I would say, as long as your doctor is recommending it and is going to monitor you and do the necessary testing, I wouldn't think it could hurt. I know that's not very helpful, sorry.
    Good luck.

  • Yep, one of my best friends went through almost the exact same thing as you.  Three MC in less than a year so they started treatment.  Next pregnancy she got progesterone and everything went perfectly.  She now has a 20 month toddler!
  • I'm sorry for your losses. I don't know about the treatments, but I certainly wish you well.

I'm sorry for your losses. Has your doctor checked for genetic reasons for the mcs?
  • Just wanted to offer ((hugs))

No, he said he could do a $3000 work up but 9/10 times it shows that the aspirin, progesterone, and folic acid will solve the problem.  He said based on my history I'm still super young and I haven't shown any problems getting pregnant so to just keep trying and see if the supplements help.
  • I never had a miscarriage, but when I first found out I was pregnant with my son I had low progesterone. They said it could lead to a miscarriage and they gave me meds to for that. It worked as he stayed put until I made him come out.
  • I have nothing to offer in terms of treatment; but I can say welcome, and good luck for the future!

I'm curious; were you told to wait a cycle or more after your first MC? It seems to be the most common practice; to make sure your HCG levels come back down to zero before you start trying again. It doesn't seem like this was done for you?

  • No I wasn't told that.  I asked my doctor if we should and she said that since it was such an early pregnancy that there was no reason to wait.  I had a first HCG of 31 on 11/4 then when I started bleeding and cramping on 11/6 I went to the ER and my HCG dropped to 11.  I followed up with my primary doctor a few days later and had me go in for another test.  At that time my HCG was only 2 so she said the miscarriage was complete and there was no reason to wait for another cycle.  I had no idea I would get pregnant again this quickly!
  • Just got a call from the doctor, my HCG is now 44! I know theres the possibility of there being leftover products of conception or it being an ectopic pregnancy but for now I'm going to let myself be thankful and happy.  He called in the progesterone and folic acid/vitamin B to see if that helps things progress.

If I were you I would request an ultrasound ASAP. That sounds like an ectopic and you will need immediate treatment. Waiting for things to progress could result in a loss of a tube.

    * dirty lurker, TW, pg mentioned*

    Hi there,

My sitch is a little different in that I was doing other fertility meds for my current pregnancy to GET pregnant, but to maintain the pregnancy was similar- I was put on a huge dose of progesterone suppositories 2x a day starting at 3dpo and for the months we were trying, I would start that until pregnancy was either confirmed or 16dpo and negative test (I was using trigger shots and multiple ultrasounds so I knew when I was ovulating) and would stop taking them and my period would come.  For the cycle we did get pregnant on, I continued the 2x daily progesterone until 10 weeks, then dropped to 1x week for a week, then stopped altogether.  You can see my history under my signature, its not quite the same as yours, but after what I thought was a second miscarriage (really was an unresolved and slow to progress ectopic) my doctor wrote me  global referral to see an RE and thats where I later did my fertility treatment from after losing a tube.  Thats just how my insurance happened to work out- they let me go before three miscarriages; I did have the recurrent pregnancy loss panel done (18 vials of blood) and was found to have elevated thyroid antibodies and began thyroid meds in the summer on my hiatus, and will take those through the end of pregnancy.  They cant confirm since I did not have any testing on my first miscarried fetus (no reason to), but my thyroid issue may have been a factor in losing that pregnancy.  I did not go the baby aspirin route but I did look into it prior to the RE prescribing the other things, they just didn't think I needed to.  If your doctor thinks it would help you, I'd listen to their advice. But, maybe just to give a positive outcome (so far), the progesterone, thyroid med, and all along folic acid, have at least sustained this pregnancy to 17.5 weeks.  Best of luck to you!

ETA: I also had an HSG done prior to starting the fertility meds on my remaining tube. I got my global referral (which meant the specialist was covered and not out of pocket) from my general practitioner who I never ever see...again not sure if that was just lucky or what.

  • We're going to see what the HCG says on Saturday, depending on how that goes they will get me in sometime next week.  I felt a strong twinge the other night when I twisted in my sleep, I'm wondering if I pulled something that caused the bleeding.

Sorry for your losses, but I'm super confused by the bolded statement. If you just lost your second pregnancy on Sunday, why would you be happy that your HCG is climbing again two days later? Did I miss something?

  • ^^ you should listen to her. I lost my left tube due to an ectopic. I'm lucky it didn't rupture.
  • We didn't wait because my doctor said there was no reason to but we also didn't think I was going to get pregnant again so quickly.  My HCG was at 2 after the first miscarriage and the ER doctor said my cervix was already closed.  The doctor thought I had already miscarried when I saw him yesterday, he didn't do a pelvic yet though.  We'll see what Saturday and next week brings!

So if you had no confirmation that you miscarried on Sunday, why did you come here to ask this question? Better off just asking on your BMB.

Yea I'm really confused now myself....
Because if you read my initial post it was asking about if the folic acid, progesterone, and baby aspirin will help with future pregnancies.  Not this one that I am currently working to find out what is going on with it...
  • The very start of OPs post said ... I very unfortunately lost my second pregnancy on Sunday after a first miscarriage in early November... No?

    So confused too ...

  • I posted the original post thinking I had miscarried because I hadn't gotten my most recent HCG level from the doctor yet.  I was asking if others had used those supplements while they were trying to get pregnant.  Hence why I put it on the "Trying to Get Pregnant" board.  A couple hours after I submitted the post, the doctor called me saying my levels had actually gone up a reasonable amount indicating I was still pregnant and hadn't miscarried like I had thought in the original post.
  • That makes sense then, well glad to hear everything's ok, I haven't had any of those medications, only the normal dose of folic acid but wouldn't mind looking into this baby aspirin thing...

Thank you very much.  I was shocked to get that phone call yesterday.  My HCG went from 13 on Thursday to 44 on Monday.  There was still some light spotting throughout the day but I'm not stressing out too much about it.  I know there is a chance it could be an ectopic pregnancy but he didn't seem too concerned with that possibility yet.  I'm going in for another blood draw on Saturday so we can figure out where to go from there on Monday.  Now I'm on a two-pill prenatal vitamin combo, high dose folic acid/b vitamin, 200 mg prometrium, and an 81 mg baby aspirin.  We'll see if that helps change the course of things!
  • **lurking

I don't think its "super awkward" .. I think she's asking a question about getting pregnant. I have not personally tried that combo of things to get pregnant but thought I'd chime in as a close friend of mine was prescribed that stuff from her Dr and is now 5 months pregnant :) so good luck hope it works
  • Next time read the full original post... I posted this when I thought I had miscarried.  After I posted this the doctor called and told me my numbers actually went up so I could still be pregnant. Waiting to hear if my HCG went up again on Saturday, today.

So yes this post was intended for "Trying to Get Pregnant."
  • It was a miscarriage, my level dropped from 44 on Monday to 5 on Saturday.  My doctor said not to worry about taking the progesterone or higher dose folic acid until I get another positive but I am thinking about just taking half of the dose he had me on to see if that helps with regulating my periods more in the meantime.
  • Thank you.  No I didn't but I did some reading and I don't think I'm going to take it.  I was thinking about taking it after I ovulate to see if that helps get more progesterone to pregnancy earlier but I think I'm going to wait.  We're planning on waiting for me to have another period or two before trying again.  We tried to wait a cycle last time but that plan didn't work out for me.  Hoping giving my body a break for a cycle or two in addition to the progesterone and folic acid when I do become pregnant again will help me have a successful pregnancy next time.
  • Sorry for your loss @Caitie81490
