Has anyone refused to take the 3 hour test?

I royally failed my 1 hour test with a 193 and the sugar spike and crash was so bad I missed work. I already know what the outcome of the 3 hour would be and I'd really rather just skip the torture and accept that I've got GD. My mom had it with both of her pregnancies and is now type 2 diabetic, so I'm really not surprised. I'm already used to using a glucose monitor (years of my mom chasing me around to make sure my levels were good), and I have no problem adjusting to a diabetic diet since that's what I grew up on.

Is there a point to the 3 hour other than just a diagnosis? And am I being completely irresponsible by not taking it even if I'm willing to just take the diagnosis and go from there?

though it sounds like there's a good chance you have it, i personally wouldnt skip the 3hr test. a lot of ladies on here have failed the 1hr test, but passed the 3hr test. as much as it sucks (it made me insanely sick too), i would do it. you never know, you may pass!

  • @Poppy0419 I would ask  if you can skip it, the worst they can say is no.  I'm wondering if for insurance purposes they'll want to see you fail before covering additional expenses, but hey, I'd ask!

  • @FutureMrsCaesar I hadn't even thought about insurance purposes! Thanks for pointing that out.

@kyraaD I honestly never even considered the fact that I could still pass. I guess if I end up taking it, there's a chance for hope and Christmas desserts at the end of this!
  • I failed the 1-hr and just passed the 3-hr!

But if you really don't want to, ask! Like PP said, the worse thing they can say is no.

    Good luck, @Poppy0419
  • I'm 28w 5d and failed my 1-hour today with a 168. My doctor seemed confident that I would pass the 3-hour, but I think she was just trying to be positive. I don't get it. I'm a healthy weight and I eat healthy. My doctor said 10% of healthy women get GD. Three hour is on the 31st, so wish me luck!
  • I fasted all day and took off work early to do mine a couple Friday's ago...only to be told last week that they lost my blood and I have to go back and do it again. NOT looking forward to it! Gahhh
  • I failed my 1 hour taking my 3 hour tomorrow it happened with my second baby also. I tend to fail the 1 hour but pass my 3 hour I didn't fail by much but they still want me to take the 3 hour.
  • I was diagnosed with GD a week ago. Since taking my blood four times a day, I discovered I am actually hypoglycemic...without changing my diet. I went to the nutritionist and she said I'm not getting enough carbs and she wants to see me back in two weeks to see if my numbers went up. So I said, "So if I am force-feeding myself carbs to get my numbers up, then I am not diabetic...." They are still insisting I am and making me go to doc appts, scans, etc. and eat and drink tons of stuff I normally don't consume. I don't eat sugar and do a Paleo-type diet. Drinking 100 grams of sugar in under 5 minutes for a blood test is not an accurate test for me, in my opinion. I am feeling extremely confused. Has anyone else dealt with this? Am I just being ignorant or missing something here?

  • Just got the call that I failed my 1-hour, got a 148 when I needed to be under 140. She said not to get upset about it, enjoy my Christmas, and come do the 3-hour on Tuesday. Based on how close it was, I'm not really worried about GD, but I am totally bummed that I have to go through the 3-hour, it seems so miserable.

I'm finding that I've got the same issue. I failed my 1-hour and my doctor cleared me to not do the 3-hour as long as I was checking my levels and nothing was coming back high. My numbers are actually very low, but they're going to treat it the same as if I was diabetic. No one has said anything to be about adding more carbs to my diet, though. My Doctor is okay with me continueing to eat my normal, mostly Paleo diet but they'll be doing scans to check baby's growth.

I definitely agree with you that the tests don't show the whole picture of what's going on, which is why I refused the 3 hour. I assumed I had GD based on a heavy family history of it.

Any blood sugar issue, be it high or low, does really need to be watched closely, especially while pregnant. Try talking to your doctor and nutritionist again about your concerns. Maybe they can more thoroughly explain their thought process.

  • I got the same call today. I was in tears after speaking to the Dr. I also have to see a nutritionist and a high risk dr. Pregnancy is stressful enough. Now adding in having to check sugar levels 4 times a day while working a non regulated retail work schedule is going to be even more stressful.

I just wanted you to know you are not alone. I'm sure it won't be so bad once we know what we need to do to control it. Take care of yourself and the baby! Best of luck!

Being diabetic isn't necessarily equivalent to only having high blood sugar. A lot of diabetics get dangerously low blood sugars. Any abnormal reading be it high or low during pregnancy should be carefully monitored.

You have GD based on the fact that your body can't regulate your blood sugar (if it could your glucose readings would have been normal during the test). I have a friend who failed the three hour and was diagnosed because her sugar got really high for the first hour, was normal for the second hour, and way too low at the third hour. Your body should be able to regulate your sugar for 3 hours, not get too high or too low, both are considered abnormal. So her body wasn't metabolizing things correctly or regulating her sugar.

It's great that you can prevent high readings by controlling your diet, but you also have to prevent low readings. The goal is to have steady levels that are neither too high or too low.
  • Thank you all so much for your responses and information. The doctors have been of no help at all in the explanation department, so I feel like I'm getting a clearer picture of this whole GD thing through you!

  • I'm so confused how everyone had only 1hr? I just did the drink and I was told I come back in to draw the blood in an hour and AGAIN the following hour! So basically mine is 2 hours?! Ugh, so annoyed. This is my first one for this pregnancy, so it's not like I failed one prior. I really don't remember it taking this long with my other 2 pregnancies.
  • @LoA I did the two hour test instead of the one hour also. My doctor prefers it to the one hour which has a high fail rate. Unfortunately I still failed but since I had done the two hour I didn't have to go back for the three hour. It was nice to only have to go through the process once.
  • Took my first 1hour test yesterday. Won't get the official results back until Monday but my doctor isn't confident that I passed. She said there was a lot of sugar in my urine. I'm just praying I don't have to do the 3 hour test! The one hour was bad enough, had to pack a sandwich for me to eat after my blood was drawn. Not to mention I'm a baby when it comes to needles.. :unamused:
  • @lanatalia

I took mine and it came back at 44. The midwives didn't seem overly concerned about it. I did run 6 miles without eating or drinking anything prior to the test though, so I wonder if that makes a difference. With my first, I think my glucose test came back around 110.

My friend who is also currently pregnant had her's come back at 41. No one seemed too worried either.

  • I'm freaking out a little bit! My first baby I passed the one hour no problem. My second baby I failed the one hour by a couple of points after eating peanut butter toast and drinking coffee with sugar that morning, but passed the three hour test very easily.

Just got a call that I failed the one hour test last week by a LOT! I just had some almonds and cheese this morning and now I'm worried! I'm a healthy weight and exercise regularly, even though I haven't been eating well the last week because of Christmas. But I just wasn't expecting it and now I'm worried I've been hurting the baby eating all this sugar the last week!

I have my three hour scheduled for Tuesday. I feel so discouraged :(

  • On Thursday I failed my 3-hour. The doctor was out and hasn't called me yet, but I saw the fasting and 1 and 2 hour:
    Fasting-79
    1-hour-187
    2-hour-185
    3-hour- ???

Without changing my diet, I've been checking my glucose levels 4 times a day: fasting (when I wake up) and 1 hour after meals. They're all normal. Even today when I had beignets for breakfast (a French donut with powdered sugar) my glucose was 119 at the 1 hour (my highest reading yet). My readings have been anywhere from low 70's for fasting to 100-119 for the 1-hour postprandial.

I know it's important if you're diabetic to watch for not only highs, but also lows. Mine have all been normal. so a few questions:

1.) If you have been diagnosed with GDM, when and how often do you check your levels? Like I said, I've been checking fasting and 1-hour after meals, but I'm wondering if I should start checking 2 hours after meals instead.

2.) Has anyone else failed a 3-hour and been diagnosed with GDM but have regular readings without even changing your diet?

3.) I'm thinking about requesting an A1C if my doctor insists that I have GDM. Has anyone here had an A1C checked or requested it if you thought your diagnosis was wrong? I don't want to seem pushy, but I also want to take an active role in my healthcare.

    Thanks!

thanks! I went back for an unrelated issue and mine was in the normal range. I think it could have just been an outlier. No one has mentioned it and my dr. is not concerned.

  • I'm in the "failed both tests" camp as well. :(

I had my one hour test at 27w5d. The nurse at my OB's office said to eat something high protein with some complex carbs before I went in so I had an egg over medium and a piece of whole white wheat toast. I normally get very dizzy after blood work, but this time I was fine. In fact, I felt great afterwards and thought there would be no way I could fail. I was normal weight and BMI before getting pregnant and have only gained nine pounds so far. My baby measured in the 60th percentile in an ultrasound several days before so based on all of that I naively thought I was in the clear. The next morning I heard from my OB's office and my results were 152, so I failed by twelve points.

I went in for my three hour test at 28w0d. I was told not to eat or drink anything after midnight, so I went ahead and had dinner at 7:30pm and drank nothing but water until my test the next morning at 7:45am. Everyone, including my OB nurse, said the three hour test was a terrible experience and I was very nervous, but it went just fine. I couldn't stop shivering for about ten minutes right after drinking the orange drink, but other than that I was fine. I sipped on water while I waited to get my blood taken and didn't feel dizzy or nauseated. The next morning I got the call that I passed my fasting and two hour draws, but failed my one and three hour draws by eighteen and two points respectively. The nurse said that due to failing two of the four draws I had to be classified as having gestational diabetes. I have to go fill a prescription for a blood glucose meter and have my pregnancy co-managed by a fetal maternal medicine specialist. I meet with him/her next week to learn how to manage the GD and have another ultrasound.

I'm pretty bummed about it because I feel like this probably could have been prevented if I had a better diet or exercised more. But I'm grateful that the tests themselves weren't as traumatic as everyone was leading me to believe, and that I have access to quality medical care to help me manage. So I'm trying to see the bright side of this.

I was diagnosed with GD about three weeks ago and I also blamed myself but have come to realize there is nothing I could of done to prevent it. It's all about how our pancreas and placentas are working together.

I've been checking my blood sugar for almost a week now with minimal diet change and my one hour numbers after eating are always under target, however, my fasting number in the morning tends to be borderline and I've gone over by 1 point twice now. I have a follow up appointment on Wednesday and I'm really hoping for some leeway with the fasting number.

Honestly the worse part about the diagnosis is how time consuming it is to monitor everything. Between having to eat 6 times a day and testing 4 times a day plus the weekly appointment with the nutritionist it feels like GD has taken over my life.

Thanks for the reply! It's encouraging to hear that your experience is that it's more annoying/inconvenient than anything. I think it will be interesting to see what kind of changes I'll need to make. I just hope I won't require insulin because although the glucose testing helped ease my fear of getting blood drawn, I'm still fairly afraid of needles and can't imagine giving myself injections. Dr. Wikipedia seems to indicate that since I failed my one hour and three hour draws that I have type A1 and should only require diet and exercise modification. I'm clinging to that for now!

Good luck to you on the rest of your pregnancy, SarahJean!

  • You do not fast for the 1 hour, but it is 8-14 hours of fasting before 3 hour. For the 1 hot they are just trying to get an accurate gauge of where your normal blood sugar levels are. For the 3 hour hey are monitoring the way your body is processing the sugar.
  • Coming back to update. I had failed my one hour with a 191. Got the call today that I technically passed, but one of my numbers (the one hour) was elevated. So they want me to follow the diet, but I don't have to test myself or anything. So I guess I'm relieved, but just trying to figure out the diet stuff right now. I guess I'm just supposed to count carbs?

  • Found out today I passed my 1 hr at 120 yay! ..surprised though I thought for sure I would have to take the 3 hr like last time
  • I failed the one hour by 5 points :( Took the three hour test yesterday morning and still waiting for my results. Thinking about calling my doctor this afternoon to see if they have them because I'm getting really anxious about it.

  • Yay, my "no news is good news" theory was right, I passed my 3-hour! The doctor told me that if I had failed they would have been hunting me down right away... Hoping that's the case too for anyone else waiting for results!
  • @annamakesthings I certainly hope you are right! Still no word from my doctor. Tried calling to get my results but their office sends you to leave a voicemail for lab results. Fingers crossed I hear something tomorrow!

  • I know this is an old post, but I am actually going through the same exact thing that you are. My husband and I eat very clean, maybe not necessarily paleo though. I do not eat 50 grams of glucose in a day, yet maybe 3 days. I failed my 1 hour test, and my score was off the charts. After doing some research and talking with several different doctors and a naturopath, it seems like the pancreas isn't used to the overload of glucose, therefore like you said, for us it is a false result. I have been taking my blood sugar 4 times a day, the only time it went high was when I ate a gluten free brownie (go figure). Just remember, if your dietician changes your diet, you'll see those numbers reflected in your sugar levels. I know this post is late! How are you doing now?

I've been taking my blood sugar 4 times a day and my numbers have been completely normal, if not a little low. I failed the one hour with a whopping 190 something. My diet has been WAY worse this last trimester than the first two...seriously no self control left over here.

My doctor doesn't think that I have GD but there's absolutely no harm in being over cautious and taking your blood sugar anyways. I'm going to continue doing it just so if for some reason my numbers start being off, I'll be aware of it. Better safe than sorry when it comes to anything with our babies!
