    First meal of rice cereal!

(Yes she has a cold and her cheeks flush super easily. She's fine).

Did you match the bib to the spoon on purpose?
  • Lo had avocado and some oatmeal. She loves the oatmeal but tasted the avocado and wouldn't open her mouth. So I snuck a little bit of avocado on the spoon with the oatmeal so she could get some of it. She has had avocado before probably about 3 weeks ago but seemed crabby those 2 days we tried it so I stopped giving it to her and figured I would try again today. Anyway.. She was still sitting in the high chair after eating and she threw up all over herself avocado and I assume the oatmeal. She did not throw up the last times she had avocado and she had more those times also. I'm wondering if this could be an allergy to avocado or just random thing that happened after eating it..
  • Anyone have any tips for getting LO to eat? She refuses to open her mouth for food. I'll try and shove some in there and she gets so mad. Thicker rice cereal she does okay with (okay is a stretch) but sweet potatoes she closes her mouth like Fort Knox. Do you guys warm up the purree? The rice cereal is kind of warm.

  • @dancegurl1118 It's against all good advice, but have you tried something that actually tastes good, like apples or pears?

I only warm up the purees if they're actually cold from the fridge. I wouldn't worry too much if she's not eating yet though. She'll eat when she's ready.

@dancegurl1118 I agree with @ChardeeMacDennis ! Find something she likes. Does she like to put your fingers in her mouth? In the beginning I would put whatever food on my finger and let her pull it to her mouth and suck on that. Also like I said earlier, clearly she doesn't like avocado... But she loves her oatmeal and squash the best

Eta - I use cold breastmilk for the oatmeal and she doesn't have a problem with cold food
  • @dancegurl1118 we have only tried sweet potatoes and carrots so far, but carrots were definitely a bigger hit than the sweet potatoes. I did warm them a little bit, I don't know if that made a difference, but she ate them.
  • @dancegurl1118 doesn't your lo require her bottles to be screaming hot? Maybe warming the food would help.

We aren't in love with sweet potatoes here. Carrots and squash are bigger hits, and bananas--he couldn't even wait for the spoon, he grabbed the bowl and tried to drink it.
  • Avocado and banana "pudding" was a good hit.
  • @423ang yes! And I was hoping to break that with her with food! Haha! Guess not..

  • I don't know if you subscribe to Lucie's list but she says it can take up to 10 attempts (in the same feeding) for a baby to accept a new food. I haven't started solids so I have no idea if that's true!

We tried peas for the 1st time last night and when we went up to take a bath I noticed LO was bright red in some places on his back and sides and had tiny little bumps. And I know peas are a legume and peanuts are a legume too, right? And I've seen someone go into anaphylactic shock from eating peanut butter. So am I just being totally crazy or should I attempt to feed him peas at the doctor's office next time? I figure if he has a bad reaction there they'd have an epi-pen at least. We are going there next week. I'm terrified the redness was like an initial reaction and the 2nd exposure could be life threatening, I think it was on Rescue 911 with bees once. Or is it usual for a food reaction to be mild and stay mild?

ETA LO wasn't showing any signs of itching or discomfort.
  • FYI The latest recommendation to prevent peanut allergy is to give them 1 tsp a week starting at 6 months. Our pedi said to swipe the inside of LO's cheek once a week. Talk to your pedi, but if you're worried about a food allergy, it might be better to do 1 spoonful a week than avoid it all together.
  • 1 tsp of PB or legumes in general?

So the best way to prevent a food allergy may be 1 spoonful each week instead of avoiding it altogether. Again, talk to your pedi if you have food allergy concerns. This is not a topic to listen to Internet strangers on.
  • Our NP said that there are some baby mum mum things made from peanuts that she reccomends since she considers peanut butter to be a choking hazard. I'm going to hunt these down!
  • I wish they would just make up their minds on peanut butter! My dr didn't tell me anything but I have heard the new theory is to introduce it early on bc it's supposed to reduce reactions.
  • My little dude is SO into food, and has been DYING for it for like a month... Until he tried it, and he was NOT pleased! His face was hilarious! He's had carrots (major dislike) and rice cereal (he eats it but looks pained). He likes banana a little better.

@caitlincunn my guy spit up a lot when he was trying carrots for the first time. I'm calling it a gag reflex and not an allergy, but I know NOTHING so don't base your response on me
  • @virginiaunicorn11 lo gags when she doesn't like something also! She did it when she first had food but now she doesn't unless it's something new she kinda gags and is like what is this?
  • Good to know about the carrots @virginiaunicorn11 We are on day 2 of carrots and LO has been throwing up the past two days. It's really mucus-y so puts could be from her teeth that are trying to poke through!
  • Guys, I need to create a freezer stash and have no idea what I'm doing. I'm so late to this party. And maybe in my sleep deprived state posted this elsewhere... But help! What are good resources to learn about when to pump?

My hand pump isn't cutting it. I'm gonna rent a pump. Any advice on companies for that?

    Thanks, sorry to be dumb

I'm pretty sure babies r us rents pumps, or contact your local lll or a local lactation consultant. I'm not site about what brand of pump is best to rent, but lll or a LC could help with that. Sorry, probably not super helpful

Eta super nervous about starting solids this weekend

@virginiaunicorn11 I think you can rent from hospitals, but I don't know of other companies. If you don't feed off of both sides, pump the other side when you're done feeding. Otherwise pump both sides after feeding, but know you won't get much at first. If you can, pump before you go to bed since you said LO doesn't eat every night waking. I also pump after feeding first thing in the morning since there is usually a surplus. Good luck!

ETA I've had too much wine and typing is hard.
  • @klirwin82 I think if your LO was going to have a reaction strong enough to need an epi-pen, it would have happened that first time you gave the peas. However, I'm not a doctor, this is just conjecture on my part

  • @virginiaunicorn11 I think kellymom.com has good pumping info. I just started with pumping after feedings to tell my body I needed more milk. Don't be discouraged if you don't get much right away because your supply is established and he is probably emptying you with feedings so it may take a few days to signal to your body to make more milk. Pumping to create a stash sucks. It is a labor of love.

  • Honestly, @virginiaunicorn11 I have an electric double sided Ameda pump that supposedly is 'hospital grade' that I used (tried to use) for maybe 3 weeks before it was obvious I don't respond to a pump. You should be able to get one thru your insurance, but if for some reason you can't you can have mine. Its got a carry bag and everything

  • @virginiaunicorn11 I EP, so I can't really give tips on how to work it in with breastfeeding based on my experience. But, my sister used to add a pump mid morning between the first 2 feedings of the day. She felt like she had a good supply then.

If you don't want to rent a pump, you can get a spectra pump from Amazon for under $160. I use Medela, but reading the spectra reviews, it looks pretty good!

Or, you may be able to get a free pump through your insurance?

I googled rentals and found a great local business that rents out all sorts of baby gear, mostly to moms who are traveling to the area.
I agree, don't get discouraged at first. I take all the supplements (fenugreek) and eat lots of oatmeal... Whether it makes a difference who knows, but at least it makes me feel proactive.

  • Thanks, ladies. I can get 1-4 ounces per session, total, from both boobs. Usually more on the 1 side (sometimes less, so I wait a few hours, and try again. No point in freezing less than an ounce, is how I try to do it.)
I get more from hand expressing into the pump vs pumping. But it leaves me sore.

@mellymar Not sure I want to buy a pump, even if it's free, because we will be changing countries... But not for a few more months. I can't decide. Kind of thinking I need to wait for the next kid for the free pump, but I know that sounds ridiculous. Thanks so much for the kind offer. I may come back to buy it from you.
  • @virginiaunicorn11 You can look at Craigslist too. I got a barely used Medela PISA with brand new tubes, valves, carrying bag, and battery supply power for $25. The battery pack alone is more than that!
  • @virginiaunicorn11 mine came in less than a week from insurance and I think you are entitled to them each pregnancy so getting one now would not prevent you from getting one in the future... I never even ended up using mine because I just hand pumped when I needed to but it was a really good medala one.

Also just a warning not to use any used pumps even from family members. The only pumps safe for reuse are hospital grade from the hospital or rental company which I am sure you know but a lot of people don't realize that even when you replace all the tubing it can still carry germs and diseases etc...
  • I think some insurance only allows for one pump every so many years... But I could be wrong!
  • ^ they do... I think I can get one every year (as long as I am pregnant lol)

Why? Its not like anything actually goes into the mechanism? It's like a car battery, it just provides power?

  • ^^^^ I'm sure Google says not to. That being said, I was going to use a friends if I couldn't get one through insurance, with new parts of course. My friend used her step sister's pump and everyone survived.

Not a Google recommendation. This was told to me by my doctor, the lactation consultant, both breastfeeding classes I attended, the FDA and you can read about it on kellymom.com.

Even without all those medical recommendations I would not use some else's pump.
  • I have a hard time creating a surplus for my freezer stash. I *should* pump after each morning session but I'm lazy and hate the pump. That's the only time I can pump when I'm home with LO otherwise I can't keep up pumping and feeding LO throughout the day. LO can't get enough milk from Me.

i second the kellymom website. She has great advice and information.
