Early Ultrasound to find sex at 16 weeks...

Just wanted to see how many others are going to get an ultrasound to determine the sex of the baby before 20 weeks. I will get an ultrasound at my doctor's office between 19-20 weeks, but I am THAT impatient and we are going to an ultrasound place to find out at 16 and a half weeks. Made our appointment today with an early Christmas present gift card from my grandma!

They said that if they aren't convinced they are correct that they'll bring you back the next week free of charge. He said that they won't say "We're 80% sure it's a ___!"

We did last time with DD, it was an amazing experience even if we hadn't learned her sex. We got to watch her for like 45 minutes! I loved it!

That's what I'm thinking too! @sparkysunshine I am so eager to see that little baby if at all possible! We did it an elective one time with DS and we just loved it. The place is so friendly and personable too. Our best ultrasound picture is from that appointment.

Yeah, you might get flamed, but whatever. It's ok to be excited and want to know as much as you can about your LO. Wanting to know your babys sex does not mean it some how takes away from the importance of a healthy baby

Of all the things this board decides to throw a fit about, I wouldn't think this qualifies.

How expensive are these places? I've never heard of one around here.

@jlgriff11 it was $75 last time, but there was cheaper. I chose the one I did because she lets you watch your baby for so long. It wasn't like "oh,there's the privates, have a nice day!"
Eta: she also wouldn't do it if you had not had an ultrasound already.

It's $79! I asked for it as a Christmas gift and of course my grandma was all over it! My family is so psyched to find out. You get a 20 minute ultrasound and pictures and you can bring up to 10 people! We won't though, lol.

I believe we will have our appointment between 18 and 20 weeks. I am also impatient but I am also cheap and I do not want to pay extra money for something I am going to get in a couple more weeks. No judgement if you want to find out sooner. It's your life and baby, do as you please.

Yeah, they wanted to know who my doctor is, when I had my first ultrasound and if it was a normal pregnancy.

I been thinking about doing the 4D ultrasound. It's pricey but it's my husbands first and only kid so it's totally worth it. But I have a ways to wait for that.

I didn't even know this was an option! But I just looked it up and there's a place super close to me that will do a "Gender check" @ 14 weeks for $55 and you get a cd with all the pics. Flame away, I may do this! (Will probably wait a little after 14 was tho)

A friend of mine just got hers at 14 weeks with an elective scan and her sister did it with all three of her children. I am definitely looking into it as well. It is closer to $100 where I am at.

My sister in law did this with hers and found out at 13 weeks, which is pretty lucky that early. I've thought about doing the same but closer to 15 weeks as that's my birthday and thought it would be fun. I don't know, it's not for awhile, we will see!

I think it's great. Go for it! I think I can wait til the 20 wk anatomy scan but I don't blame you one bit.
Edit to add they scheduled my anatomy scan at 18 weeks so not too long to wait.

I would love to do this...the only place near Calgary I can find that does early testing is a 2 hour drive each way. Not ideal with our winter roads. I don't care what the little bean turns out to be...but I want to start shopping! and planning a nursery....if I could find out today, I would do it.

We did with my DD too! It was around 16-17 weeks and they could tell right away it was a girl. I think it cost $100, but it included a couple 3D pictures! We made a whole weekend out of it and stayed at a bed and breakfast (it was right around our 2nd wedding anniversary too). You should do it if you don't mind paying extra

I actually didn't think it was that cheap. We are not finding out the sex of the baby until it's born, but it's not a bad idea if you're impatient! My sister has such awesome insurance and when she was pregnant had an ultrasound at pretty much every appointment. I only get two!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but how exactly is this technology different from the regular OB's office? Honestly asking! What makes them able to tell you the sex with such accuracy while an OB wouldn't be able to at that point?

So I will preface this and say that everyone has to do what is right for them, but you should know that the American College of OBs and Gyns recommends against going to unlicensed places, as does the FDA. They can use higher frequencies than medical professionals use and that can potentially cause heating for the baby (which in mice has led to cell migration although it hasn't been studied well in humans). Just please be informed before you decide to do elective things.

@am0987 I don't think the technology is different. Doctors offices are waiting to be sure all the anatomy is completely formed. That is why it is an anatomy scan...the sex is just a bonus.

Teen Green all the way here. We are doing the free cell DNA testing and I have had an ultrasound every week since 6... I sincerely wish with all of my heart that I didn't have to have so many ultrasounds. But in any case, we will be thrilled to have a healthy baby no matter what the sex is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking anybody that wants to go and find out the sex of their child early. Just answering the question which is that it is not for us.

Do regular dr's use the 3D ultrasound but only some? I would be interested if I could see the 3D one it seems so neat to see the baby in that way. I wouldn't worry about getting flamed. It is a personal choice and it isn't rediculously expensive and it's not like you are wasting services such as going to the ER like one poster because she just wanted to see an ultrasound.

some OBs do have a 3D machine. Mine does. My former OB did not. Depends on your doctor and how advanced their machines are. It's not common for an OB to have a 3D machine though so I wouldn't expect yours to. It's a question you can ask at your first appointment it you haven't had one.

I did it with my 3rd because my husband was about to deploy to Iraq and he wanted to be there. We are in Japan now and get ultrasounds sparingly. We will be going to a Japanese Dr to deliver and they do have 3d ultrasounds and hope to get one when we transfer at 20 weeks.

I'm getting Harmony results next week and a private 4d scan at 13 and a half weeks. My main concern is the health of the baby and seeing his/her features on a detailed scan, but I am also quite delighted to take advantage of the sex info that comes along with the amazing technology available to us these days. Looks like I'll know whether we're having a girl or boy by latest Friday next week, before 12 weeks. I've bought two sets of newborn socks (one blue, one pink) to give the news to my hubby and family when we are on holiday next week. Can't wait.

I say if you really want to do it, then go for it. However, be warned that 16 weeks is a little bit early. When I had my anatomy scan with DD at 19 weeks they weren't positive she was a girl. I had to go back a few weeks later for a follow up, because she was measuring small. When I went the next time they did confirm she was a girl. Just be aware that it they may not be certain of the sex.

My dr's office now offers the additional scans. We got a brochure during our first appointment. We may go that route if the prices are comparable.

My next ultrasound is at 15 weeks and my Doctor told me we might be able to find out the sex if baby cooperates

He also has a 3D ultrasound but I'm not sure which one he'll use that day.

As far as this getting flamed, I feel like if no one is flaming it, and you can't think or a reason to flame it yourself there is no need for comment about it maybe getting flamed.

Anyway, I am probably doing this as well, my doctors office is in a small town and all my u/s so far just look like fuzzy blobs. Like, last time at 9 weeks I wanted to see arms and legs.

It may be normal but since they had a CRT monitor and ancient looking ports on it I am not sure. I want better u/s pictures and I want to know the gender as soon as I can. lol

I am not going to do it because my friends were told the wrong sex. I would rather wait a couple more weeks than have my emotions messed with! Also, like someone else mentioned, I don't feel comfortable going through someone else besides my doctor. There are more risks that I don't want to take. However, I definitely understand wanting to know the sex earlier

I'm actually doing the blood test at 11 weeks that tells you the chromosome of your baby - so, we only have 2 more weeks to wait! My OB said it's a fairly common blood test now and most insurance covers it as it also checks for the trisomy and down syndrome.

I think they mentioned getting flamed because in past posts about these boutiques people were definitely getting burned by the usual people who believe that "they know better." Anyways, my friend got a 3D scan and found out the gender at 14 weeks and she gets an app that lets her access her photos and videos. My DH and I talked about it but I think we much rather just wait for 20 weeks for the regular anatomy scan but we are super excited and can't wait to find out the gender since we are first time parents.

Over the years this has been a very hot button issue. Many people believe that the effect of unnecessary ultrasounds may not be able to be quantified, especially at the significant frequency which enables the 3D imaging. I didn't flame you. I was just warning you that you could possibly expect some people to react negatively.

The place by me does them at 14 weeks and if they are unsure then they do a repeat scan.

I want to add regarding the use of different equipment: the radiology dept that does the 20 week anatomy scan for my midwife offers elective ultrasounds as well. Therefore, if that specific case, there is no difference in equipment!

I'm not sure if this was a response to me. Perhaps someone else. said that there is different equipment used. I think the negative public reaction is that that technology, since it is so powerful, should not be used as frequently. IMO, your body/your baby.

I think the issue is the settings they put the machine on, not the machine itself.
