I TOTALLY agree with you ladies! Snow is the absolute WORST! DH and I lived in Northeast Ohio our first year of marriage, and I was absolutely miserable (I'm from the South, and had never had to deal with it before.). It was to the point where I would only go outside to get in my car and drive to work and back, and I refused to go anywhere else until it melted. That's how we ended up in Florida where 65-70 degrees is considered a "cool" day. If I never saw another snowflake for the rest of my life, I could die happy!
Oh I feel your pain...I live in North central ohio...have my whole life...I've always hates sboe, even as a child. DH won't leave though so I'm stuck here. And I thank God for my garage every single day lol
I'm going to jump on the Christmas decoration train and say I really can't stand those colored lights that are mostly blue and purple. They just look weird to me and I am not a fan. Also, the red flamed candles people put in their windows look strangely demonic to me. In my opinion, the whole point of Christmas lights outside is to mimic the sparkle of freshly fallen snow so the white lights framing a house or accenting a tree/bushes looks magical vs tacky.
The red flamed candles terrify me!! My grandma had some and I wouldn't go upstairs when she had them in the windows...still won't actually.
I see no reason every year why we must have a 7 hour (yes 7 ) Christmas party for work. DH always feels obligated to go and I agree bc he's on pretty good terms with the president of the company, but 7 hours?! It eats up my entire Saturday.
It's a formal party so I spend all day getting ready. Then it's 45 mins from the house. From 5 to 6 is a cocktail/appetizer/picture/find your table hour. 6-7 is dinner. 7-8:30ish is people getting awards from throughout the year and really cheesy speeches we all hate (although I do get a 5 year service award this year with a gift card so go me). Casino games from 8:30 to 10:30 - you get drawing entries for prizes based on the amount of chips you have at the end. Then the rest of the time is chip counting/prize drawing. And they're good prizes I'll hand it to you. I could really use the $1500 visa gift card someone won last year. But omg cut the party time in half. I'll be sleeping at the table or in the car this year by the end.
And I swear if someone even mentions after party to DH I will scream. This whole 7 hour period we have an open bar (which will be so much fun for me...) and by the end everyone seems to think it's such a great idea to go out another 2 hours and drink.
I thought the whole point of the elf was to keep your kid's behavior good?!? Why then do most parents have their elf causing trouble?? This just confuses me, as I'm sure it does your child. And why the daily need to post it on facebook? We get it, I'm sure you have an Pinterest board dedicated solely to your elf, here's your "Mom of the Year" award.
Ya know what our elf did yesterday? Sat on the flipping shelf. Ya know what he's doing today? Yep, sitting on the same shelf because I forgot to move him. Tomorrow you ask? I'm going to put him in the Christmas tree.
Having been given a very generic, very easy to nn name, I fully support names were the nickname has to be entirely made up.
My uo is kids having tons of toys. The longer we've been married the more minimalistic we've become. We've just found having less stuff helps us focus on what we actually like to do. Besides for the first few years everything is a toy. At least that's how my daycare kids have been. I understand a few main toys. Idk maybe my opinion will change once I've got my own kid.
Edit: It took me six attempts to post. So annoying.

I never got this either. My step sister has one and she never has it causing trouble - one day it brought out a Christmas movie to watch and some hot cocoa for everyone. Today it's chilling in the Christmas tree. I don't have an issue with stuff like that, I just feel like the ones where they make messes and get into trouble are contradictory.
@lalala2004 I agree that sending out postcards with names and faces on them is a bit much; it seems very much like harassment or some leftover Puritanism. However, I appreciate being able to look up an area to see possible offenders/ concentration of offenders (which Megan's Law provides). DH and I were able use this information along with other things like school district, taxes, etc. to make an informed decision when we bought a house. Regarding the situation you encountered, it's possible that it was a relationship, but it's also possible that it was rape. One could also make the argument that someone as young as 13 cannot actually consent to sexual contact with someone because they're not developed enough to understand the weight of the decision. (Which is one reason why there are age stipulations in the first place).
The charge wasn't sexual assault, it was indecency with a minor. He wasn't at the age of consent either. I certainly wouldn't excuse what he did, it just doesn't seem like the type of offense should follow you for the rest of your life.
lalala2004 I agree, I always thought it was weird that in my state if you urinate in public you're on the sex offender list. With college campuses and other night life areas this happens. It's fine to give them a ticket but why such a harsh punishment that will follow you around for non harmful crime?
These special snowflake posts are getting super old. What's getting older? The random drive by posters who jump into them and either defend the OP or also add their own pic, support of the persons ridiculousness, etc. call me crabby, but I just can't.
I don't like the icicle Christmas lights that people hang from their houses (along with the awful blow up crap). Please, keep it simple and traditional.
A few towns over, people get REALLY into decorating. Is this what you mean by simple and traditional?
( I am making DH take me to tour it this year. I cant wait! )
I just wanted to say that my electric bill went up just looking at these pictures; )

Sometimes I don't believe recycling is real..like it's all a conspiracy to make you think you're helping the environment by sorting your trash but it all just ends up in the landfill.
For example, one of our boys names is Bennett, nn Ben.
I have always loved the name Ben, but not a big fan of Benjamin. But I am not sure that Ben alone is a good "stand alone" name.
Some nicknames are odd to be though. Someone used the name Elizabeth before as an example. No offense to anyone, but Betsy and LIbby? How do they come from Elizabeth? It doesnt make sense to me? My mom goes by Beth, and I understand Liz.
I had a friend in high school who was named Elizabeth who went by Libby when she was young, but I just saw on FB that she is now going by...wait for it...Sabet. I just have no idea. She was always a quirky person and hated that her name was so traditional.
Everyone loves to think of the weird nicknames my son will have since his name itself sounds like a nn. His name is Renzo, and no, it is not short for Lorenzo or Firenzo or any of the other crazy things people come up with. Some of the nns people have proposed: Renny (we do call him this from time to time), Ren, Zo, Rod (his initials) etc. But honestly, all of my nicknames growing up had nothing to do with my name and were mostly based on my personality and what I was into. To this day, my mother calls me Gert or Gertrude because, and I quote, "One day you jumped into the pool and didn't want to let go of your floatie so you scrunched up your nose so water wouldn't go in and it just looked like a Gert face" Yup, that is how nns are born, people!
This is how nicknames should work. In my extended family everyone has several nns depending on who's speaking. The only name based ones are from when my younger cousin invented a language and renamed everyone (she's so special).
I'm a nn fan and also the poster who's naming her LO Elizabeth and considering Libby as a nn. For our family names have historical or generational meaning a lot of the time. So names are often recycled and I'd like to keep that tradition going. Using a nn allows from us to put more modern spins on classic names and add some personality. Actually, H and I recently talked about how many kids we currently know named Matthew, Benjamin, etc. not using nn. So maybe that's a trend too. Whatever... to each his/ her own IMO. Name and call your child what you please.
I also want to add my dislike of Elf on a Shelf but for a different reason. I don't like the whole idea that your kids should behave because someone might be watching him/her. No you should follow this rule or behave because it will keep you safe, be most considerate of others, plenty of other reasons besides not wanting to be caught. IDK I just worry because I see kids every day who require incentives or consistent supervision to behave.
My UO... I hate the song "Mary Did You Know?" In the last week I've heard several people say that it's their favorite Christmas song and I judge them... harshly.
Singer: Mary did you know your baby was going to be different.... special even?
Mary: Well yeah... I had an inclination when I found out via angel that I was pregnant despite being a virgin.
This is how nicknames should work. In my extended family everyone has several nns depending on who's speaking. The only name based ones are from when my younger cousin invented a language and renamed everyone (she's so special).
Exactly. The more I think about it, we all have really weird nns in my family. We call my older sister Care Bear (I really don't know why), I am either Gert or Boba Fett (again, I am not sure why), and my younger sister is Weebot. We also lovingly call each other Fart Face and Bucket Head. We also have "code names" for certain friends and family, which I think comes from all of us being nurses and needing to talk about patients, but never using real names. But not one of these code names or nns has anything to do with our given names. At school I was called Lil' Gerbie because I apparently looked like the Gerber baby (I have always had a baby face)

********Stuck in quote box**********
Yes! Can I like this a million times? I called out DH the other day (privately...not in front of our son) because rather than explain to that DS shouldn't grab at the Christmas train because it could break and then we can't enjoy it, he simply barked, "Don't touch. Santa's watching." Of course, DS did it again 20 minutes later because that correction meant nothing to him. When we said, "Watch the train, but don't touch. Touching could break it. We would be sad if it broke," it worked much better.
I agree with the whole sex offender thing can be a bit harsh. i.e. one of DH's former co-workers was 19 and his girlfriend was 17 (they were a couple before he was 18 so it's not like a 19 year old went and picked up a 17 year old) and they were getting it on when her parents walked in on them Her parents pressed charges and now he has a status of sexual offender that follows him around for the rest of his life and he is in his 30s now. In cases like that it is ridiculous!
Edit b/c I forgot some stuff:
Snow: I like it only if it stays in the yard! I live in the south and whenever we get snow EVERYTHING shuts down. I work from home so I don't have to worry about traveling, but my DH does and I worry about him until he gets home. My previous job whenever it snowed, they would close the store and send everyone home pretty much as soon as the first few flakes fell.
Blow up Christmas decor: I'm torn with this one. I both dislike and like them. I like the traditional ones. I'm not a fan of the ones that have nothing to do with Christmas (i.e. Star Wars, Frozen, Minions). And one or two is okay but over that it gets tacky.
My UO is my daughters name is Raven and we call her Bird hahahaha... It just happened. Although she won't use it at school or anything but she answers to (mostly) Bird. DH loves the name McKenzie and I HATE it bc it was his dog's name that ran away. So, the only way to compromise on a girls name this time is to name her McKenzie June but we are calling her June. I want to name her June McKenzie but DH refuses. I'm not happy about it.

This is a random story that goes along with @lalala2004 post... I randomly looked at the Megan's Law website a few weeks ago. Turns out there was a man (who transitioned into a woman while in prison) who had raped a 7 year old a few years back in my town. I live in an extremely small town. I almost puked.
I guess I will keep going and say that my UO is that anyone who rapes a child should be shot. Screw prison- especially because they get out and can do it again.
I just had to sit through a jury case (I'm on jury duty) that was a rape of a child. Mother didn't even give a shit. It was her BF and the girl was only 8. Makes me absolutely homicidal. The little girl had extensive injuries God love her soul.

I don't understand when parents purposefully give their child a nick name. Like, naming a child Jackson, but calling him Jack. Why not just name him Jack?
My husband goes by a nickname, and I feel like it constantly creates confusion.
If we have a girl I'm naming her abigail just to call her Abby. You just gave me one of those "huh, why not just name her Abby" kind of moments..
Sometimes I don't believe recycling is real..like it's all a conspiracy to make you think you're helping the environment by sorting your trash but it all just ends up in the landfill.
LOL! You could have left it just at the first sentence. Oh geez too funny!
I'll be real - I don't like cartoon character anything. Character clothes, character decor, character wrapping paper. I also really dislike when a kid has nothing but Under Armour clothes or all Nike everything. I want kids (and adults) to have some damn style other than athletic gear 24/7. It's just a huge pet peeve of mine.
I also can't understand why people are filling in their eyebrows so dark recently. Others go way overboard on 'contouring'. I guess I'm just all-around annoyed today.
For some reason it creeps me out when kids sing in adult songs. The Beatles and Red Hot Chili Peppers both have songs with this and it just ruins it for me.
@TXmamatobe just reminded me of another UO I have.
Several people have asked me what "theme" the baby's nursery will be. I love a good themed party, but I hate the idea that everything needs a theme. The theme is bedroom and nursery. I don't like themed decorating like nautical... fruit in the kitchen... ducks in the bathroom. I'm a bigger fan of tasteful decor in cohesive colors. Sure certain people have styles like, rustic, traditional, or contemporary, but I don't think a specific theme is necessary or even appealing when decorating.
No offense to anyone but I feel the same about weddings. You're having a party and the theme is wedding. I was actually in a 1920's themed wedding this past summer. The best part is that my bridesmaid dress can be used as a future Halloween costume. How perfect is that?

It seriously drives me nuts when people call their kids "mami" or "papi". I know it's a cultural thing that a lot of Mexicans do (I am Mexican), but I hate it and IMO it's as if they are programming/encouraging these kids to reproduce ASAP.

This UO is a real snooze-fest today. Wheres all the crazy at?
Ok I'll bite.
The recent news of the multiple mass shootings sicken me.
I grew up and live in the south, my husband is a southern man. I know the craze about guns in America.
I think America needs stricter gun laws within reason and let me explain:
Should the average Joe citizen be able to have a concealed carry permit and carry a pistol for defense? Yes they should.
Should hunters be able to own shot guns to hunt? Yes they should, within regulations and seasons. Otherwise it's just poaching, which is illegal.
Should the average Joe citizen be able to buy a semi automatic rifle at Walmart? Absolutely not.
The sad thing is, many of these shooters are mentally ill or usually diagnosed after the fact and yet, guns are so easily accessible. It makes me so scared for my future child. This is happening at schools!! And all the gun lobbyists' solution is just to arm teachers and staff with more guns?! Ridiculous.
I understand that the 2nd amendment is the "Right to bear arms" but our founding fathers wrote this in their day as a way for the people to overturn a potiental tyrannical government. Well, the United States government has drones. We'd be bringing guns to a drone fight.
A lot of people make the argument that if bad people want guns, they'll get them no matter what. Does anyone know how much a semi automatic rifle is on the black market compared to Walmart? Also, the people who could afford it on the black market aren't looking to shoot school children either.
But I also think it's ridiculous that our active service men and women cannot carry guns on our soil. I think they should be evaluated mentally and be able to, if anything, THEY would be able to help in a shooting situation!
