Yup! It can be here for Christmas then melt. Those that don't live where it is feet upon feet of snow for half the year don't get just how much of a pain it is deal with, how cold you always are, how dirty it makes your car and house (well, the sand and salt from dealing with the snow, not the snow itself).....not a fan of winter. I want it to be 73 and sunny all the time. I also hate anything over 80 so apparently, I just need to find a place that is 60-80 year round. lol

  • I love Tylenol. It's my drug of choice, even when I'm not pregnant. It works wonders for me for headaches, sore throats, fevers, etc.
  • I TOTALLY agree with you ladies!  Snow is the absolute WORST!  DH and I lived in Northeast Ohio our first year of marriage, and I was absolutely miserable (I'm from the South, and had never had to deal with it before.).  It was to the point where I would only go outside to get in my car and drive to work and back, and I refused to go anywhere else until it melted.  That's how we ended up in Florida where 65-70 degrees is considered a "cool" day.  If I never saw another snowflake for the rest of my life, I could die happy!

My UO is that I hate the pressure to be super generous during the holiday season.  Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with charitable giving, and I have a number of organizations I regularly fund raise for and donate my time and money to, but I hate that it's "expected" of you during this time of year. For instance, when I go to the grocery store and there is the guy ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, I feel like a jerk if I walk past and don't throw some money in.  I rarely carry cash, but I feel like everyone is silently judging me if I don't throw a few dollars in.
  • @countrygrl5533 Me too!! I keep telling DH that we have to live in Hawaii.

@yogahh I've always liked Star Wars but it is getting a little crazy. DH is OBSESSED though. I have a feeling we're going to end up at the midnight showing..

My UO is work Christmas Parties. I like my coworkers, but I already see you too much. And I see you when we have to travel and go to work meetings and you drink at the bars after. I don't need to have a party on my Friday night in Christmas season - I want to see other friends and family.

    After hours are my hours.

    YES, 100%.
  • I really don't find the question "was it planned or a surprise" to be all that rude...depending on who asks it. A friend, no problem. A random co-worker or acquaintance, yes.

I am with you about the Star Wars. I have never understood it all either, but DH is obsessed as well and I just go along with it all.

I suppose my UO then is that I HATE having summer weather all year round. I grew up with all four seasons close to a huge snow and ski resort and although my hometown only got up to a feet of snow per storm I ADORED it and I miss it so much. Thanksgiving and Christmas don't feel like Thanksgiving and Christmas when it's 80 out and I am so stoked to be moving to somewhere that has all four seasons. I thought for sure I'd love wearing shorts and tanks year round, but nope! See ya shorts and tanks until May, cause in 10 days it's all about 40 degree weather and pants, boots, and cardigans until it's SUPPOSED to be spring :) You ladies can most definitely have my so cal weather, I've got no problem handing it over.

I dislike blow-up inflatable lawn Christmas decorations. Like giant santas or snowmen (if you live in the 'burbs, you know what I'm talking about..) SO tacky!

Those are the WORST! Even one. Then there are houses with multiple and I just want to deflate them all!

Or the people who call their kid Jack but the legal name is John. I can't tell you how much confusion that gives me when I am trying to find kids in my computer system or looking through medical records. You would think I would have figured it out by now, but it still drives me nuts!

I don't dislike the name Jack or John, but it legit annoys the crap out of me that Jack is a nickname for John.  It's just....a completely different name!  That's not how nicknames work!

I agree. I can kind of see where some parents who come up with a name and CHOOSE a nickname for that name hoping that other people won't go and make their own nickname (such as Elizabeth and parents choosing nn Beth hoping people won't call their child Liz) I mean, all of my nicknames my entire life have been a completely different name based on who's calling me such and such and 99% of my nicknames have NOTHING to do with my name lol. I personally prefer short and to the point first names. I'm constantly being asked what my name is short for and to this day I am stumped by this question. My name is Nina, what the heck could Nina be short for. People come up with all kinds of crazy longer names that my name could be short for. Same thing with my sister, her name is Elke. Pretty crazy!

OH MY GOSH YES!!!!! When I named DD I specifically said that no one will call her by a nickname unless she grows up and decides she wants one. I named her what I did because I like the name, not the nicknames! Of course when she says her name now she accidentally calls herself the exact nickname I told DH I would murder if he ever used. Karma I guess.

Also, @tgortney that's so stupid! Babies have a natural need to suck on things. It soothes them. Some babies simply don't like pacifiers but my DD liked hers, so we used it. But she was perfectly fine when we took it away when she turned 1. I do have a problem with 4 year olds using a pacifier though, but that's a different story.

  • I like a nickname, but only for SOME names,
For example, one of our boys names is Bennett, nn Ben.
I have always loved the name Ben, but not a big fan of Benjamin. But I am not sure that Ben alone is a good "stand alone" name.
Some nicknames are odd to be though. Someone used the name Elizabeth before as an example. No offense to anyone, but Betsy and LIbby? How do they come from Elizabeth? It doesnt make sense to me? My mom goes by Beth, and I understand Liz.

I had a friend in high school who was named Elizabeth who went by Libby when she was young, but I just saw on FB that she is now going by...wait for it...Sabet. I just have no idea. She was always a quirky person and hated that her name was so traditional.

Everyone loves to think of the weird nicknames my son will have since his name itself sounds like a nn. His name is Renzo, and no, it is not short for Lorenzo or Firenzo or any of the other crazy things people come up with. Some of the nns people have proposed: Renny (we do call him this from time to time), Ren, Zo, Rod (his initials) etc. But honestly, all of my nicknames growing up had nothing to do with my name and were mostly based on my personality and what I was into. To this day, my mother calls me Gert or Gertrude because, and I quote, "One day you jumped into the pool and didn't want to let go of your floatie so you scrunched up your nose so water wouldn't go in and it just looked like a Gert face" Yup, that is how nns are born, people!

My cousin named her kid Garrison but calls him Garry  like no, please do not give your kid a modern name then turn around and make it an old man's name.

THIS! I don't get it either. What's the point of the longer name that no one will use? My H says I'm too hung up on nicknames because it's something we can't fully control, but I'm really closed off to nicknamey-names. It's frustrating because if I even mention a name I like that has an obvious nickname people immediately say "and you can call her ___" - and I'm like no, we'll call her by her name. Tabitha and Evalina are names that we like but have taken off the list because I don't want her to immediately be nicknamed Tabby or Eva/Evie as family members have done when I mentioned the names.

  • I guess my UO is that I LOVE snow!! I love rain too. Something about a storm gets me psyched! My H and I fell in love during a really snowy winter (first date was on 12/23) and so it feels like our time. Living in NYC you have to appreciate the snow quickly before it turns into dirty slush that no one likes but that first hour after snow fall is magic.

I completely understand this. DH and I had our first "real" date the first week of January when we went out to get McDonald's McGriddles together at 4am, just because. We walked through falling snow snow to get there from the top of Pitt's campus and it definitely gave me this permanent feeling that falling snow is fun and romantic. I just hate trudging through it by March and scraping off my car at 5:30am to get to work. If I could just look at it and play in it, I think I'd love it. We're also the sort of couple who will open some windows or sit on our porch to better appreciate an afternoon thunderstorm.
  • I'm not sure if this is an UO or not, but I think the way they register sex offenders in the U.S. Goes a bit overboard in some cases.

We recently received a post card in the mail that a sex offender had moved to the neighborhood. Then I looked at the details and saw that the guy was 16 and the crime was indecency with a minor the age of 13. Seems to me like he fooled around with his girlfriend and her parents pressed charges. Now 14 years later he's still having his neighbors get postcards with his face on it. The postcard even said Risk:High. Excuse me if I disagree. It will make me question anything I see like that in the future.

  • @lalala2004 I agree that sending out postcards with names and faces on them is a bit much; it seems very much like harassment or some leftover Puritanism. However, I appreciate being able to look up an area to see possible offenders/ concentration of offenders (which Megan's Law provides). DH and I were able use this information along with other things like school district, taxes, etc. to make an informed decision when we bought a house. Regarding the situation you encountered, it's possible that it was a relationship, but it's also possible that it was rape. One could also make the argument that someone as young as 13 cannot actually consent to sexual contact with someone because they're not developed enough to understand the weight of the decision. (Which is one reason why there are age stipulations in the first place).

I don't like the icicle Christmas lights that people hang from their houses (along with the awful blow up crap). Please, keep it simple and traditional.
  • I'm going to jump on the Christmas decoration train and say I really can't stand those colored lights that are mostly blue and purple. They just look weird to me and I am not a fan. Also, the red flamed candles people put in their windows look strangely demonic to me. In my opinion, the whole point of Christmas lights outside is to mimic the sparkle of freshly fallen snow so the white lights framing a house or accenting a tree/bushes looks magical vs tacky.

  • @yogahh to be honest, I love seeing stuff like that. It's fun and usually they do it for charity. But it's the people who only hang up icicle lights or have 20 blow up things in their yard (my aunt and uncle, seriously), who just think it's fun that drive me up the wall.

Every year, my H and I have a date night where we drive all over the metro area and look at Christmas lights! I'm really not a Scrooge, if I could be Santa I would!

The charge wasn't sexual assault, it was indecency with a minor. He wasn't at the age of consent either. I certainly wouldn't excuse what he did, it just doesn't seem like the type of offense should follow you for the rest of your life.
