Working mama's exercise

I want to start working out again now that I've been cleared by my Dr. The only trouble is I work 8 or more hours a day. And I don't want to have to go to the gym after work and spend even more time away from LO. Right now it's cold out but I feel okay about bundling LO up and going for walks with the stroller. When I get taxes back I plan on getting a treadmill. And I'm contemplating getting a membership to the family Y even though leaving her in the day care there while I work out makes me nervous. I was just wondering what all you other working mama's are doing as far as exercising goes to get some ideas for what to do in the meantime.

Re: Working mama's exercise

  • I don't go back to work until Monday (how did 12 weeks go by so fast?!?) but my mom comes over every three days or so in the evening before going to her third shift job, my husband has some days off, I have a group of friends who go at 5:30am and make husbands have morning duties, and my gym has a daycare which is fine for an hour or so. I also have a local yoga studio that does mom & baby classes! An employee at my gym also said he has seen moms go to the gym wearing their babies and walk on the treadmill or do some other light exercises. Home workouts are good and there are some you can do using your baby as the weight!

  • Monday and Fridays I'll be going to work early, 6:30-3 but we have the sitter until 5 so I'll go to the gym right after. As for Tuesday -Thursday I don't work til 8 so I'll be going while baby and daddy are asleep in the morning.
  • I don't know how I'm going to manage. I have a treadmill, so I will probably use that when I can. I get up early, so I will probably exercise at 4am.
  • We don't have a sitter or anything and the Y is the only gym here that has a daycare that accepts infants so I guess I'm just gonna have to keep bundling her up and walking with the stroller until it's too cold. Hopefully by then we'll have a treadmill. And I'll probably look up some at home workouts
  • I'm home until February and I don't want to take baby out in the cold or spend $ on the gym when I'm not sure when I can and can't get there- so I've been putting LO in the baby Bjorn and walking the local mall.
  • I've been back to work for about three weeks now.  It's not easy, but I fit it in, because it makes me feel better and more like my old self.  I wake up at 4 am and run 5-6 days a week (on the treadmill in my basement) before starting work at 6 AM.  I also joined a gym 5 minutes from my workplace and do 20 minutes of high intensity strength training in 4-5 days a week over my lunch break.

Not every day goes perfectly, and sometimes my newborn (or my 1 or 2 year old) needs my attention at 4 AM and I have to skip the run.  Other days, I have a work commitment that prevents me from going at lunch.  But I just try to get it in MOST of the time and it makes a huge difference in how I feel.

I understand how hard it is to exercise when you're a working mama, but I find the benefits far outweigh the cost.  :-)
