soothie vs. avent bottles

I EBF, however am getting LO used to bottled for when I return to work in September (ugggh)

We currently use Avent, but yesterday she went on a "bottle boycott"-gagging and screaming when the bottle was presented. She uses the Soothie pacifier so I am considering buying the Soothie bottles. Has anyone tried these?

Re: soothie vs. avent bottles

  • I BF and use soothie pacifiers too.....I use Born Free bottles, similar to Dr. Browns.

  • I BF & DD uses soothie pacis, too.  We've had success w/ lifefactory glass bottles.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • We use Soothies and love them. DS did the same thing with other bottles, so we tried these, and he did well with them. One thing though, if you do try them, make sure you check the nipple flow before using. I accidentally tried to give DS a medium flow nipple and he just couldn't keep up. It should say right on the box what speed flow it is.

  • we used the 5 oz. soothies while i was BF'ing (soothies are the only pacifiers he likes) and our LO took them really well.  they're easy to clean, too :)

  • I've used both.  Oh, and I'm lurking. Stick out tongue

Ours was the same type of use, Avent first then Soothie because we had them from our pump (and I love having more bottles between washes.)  IMO they are similiar.  But, we moved up to Avent #2s and still used Soothie #1s.

DS didn't seem to have a preference between the two.  Both worked, probably because we used the soothie pacis first.

There is one issue we did have, which might be unique to us.  After each bottle, while DS still thinks he's hungry but just needs to satisfy that sucking need, we pop a soothie paci in his mouth.  Well, after we started using the soothie bottles too, he expected his pacis to give him milk as well (the nipples are almost identical to the pacis).  It took a few temper tantrums for him to realize the difference and not expect more milk with each post bottle paci.

  • It could just be a flow issue, even if you're using the lowest flow nipple. Are you feeding her while flat on her back? Try sitting her up in your arms, so she has more control over how fast she drinks. If you're just starting with the bottle, it'll take time for her to learn.

  • We switched from born free to playtex dropins. I love them - so little to clean. We tried switching between the two but the born free slow flows are faster than the playtex so it was an issue. We use slow flow playtex now and it's great.
  • I have used Avent since I introduced the bottle to DD at 1 month... I saw the Soothie bottles and needed to get something bigger (9 ounces instead of 4), they didn't have Avent so I picked the Soothie up.  She hates it!  But she loves her Soothie paci so I'm not sure why she didn't like it.  If your LO doesn't like the Avent right now, go for it, maybe she'll like this bottle better.
