Diclectin question

Hi all, just wondered about other Canadians' experience with diclectin. I took it throughout my pregnancy 3 years ago but don't remember my initial response. Anyway, started taking it Friday night (just 1 a night) because the ms was just too much. I'm 10 w 2d. I slept a ridiculous amount on the weekend and felt groggy through most of it- however, yesterday afternoon I felt great (tired but actually HUNGRY!!) and haven't had much ms since. I have very sore boobs still and don't feel like eating a huge diversity of things but with 2 mmc's in my past, I get really paranoid whenever symptoms change. Anyone else taking diclectin? Maybe it's just my ms getting better as I near trimester 2?? (with my daughter I didn't notice any real improvement till 13 weeks). I'm probably just being my usual anxious hormonal self but any reassurance would be welcome.

Re: Diclectin question

  • I take Diclegis (the american form) and it helps sometimes. The first couple days it made me EXHAUSTED to the point I could hardly function, but now I've been on it for several weeks and have adjusted to it (I'm 10 weeks today). I snack non-stop, but that helps my MS, too. Not sure if it's a side effect or not. My symptoms change frequently, but your HCG levels are still going up every couple days so they will continue to change until you peak at 12 weeks. I'm a FTM, but I've read on a lot of threads that people's MS starts getting better at 10 weeks......I hope that's true because the past couple weeks have sucked.

  • I've been taking Dicletin, both for this pregnancy and my mmc this summer. I only took 2 at bedtime last time and that was enough to make a huge difference for me. This is the MS was waaaayyy worse and I was taking the max dose of 4 per day at one point. I think it made the difference between puking and not puking for me. Now I keep my food down, I weaned off by taking 3 per day, and then just the two at night, and now at 12w5d I'm only taking one at night and just having the odd wave of nausea here and there that is totally manageable with a snack or ginger chew. I never felt groggy taking Diclectin, maybe because I felt exhausted all day before the nausea even hit! lol. I only have about 6-8 pills left so I figured I'd just take them until I run out and then it should be manageable in other ways at that point. I feel like I'm rambling, but I hope my info was helpful! :)
  • Canadian and on Diclectin. It made me so horribly drowsy at first. I've been on it about 3 weeks. 2 pills at night one in am then 1 mid afternoon. For the most part I'm feeling good. Still have the odd bad day though.
  • Actually max dose is 8 a day. 4 is the recommended. I was given ok to take up to 8 a day with #1. And for a good portion of my pregnancy I had to.
  • Sorry for being Captain Obvious, but I think it's fair to say your morning sickness is improving because you're on medication to combat morning sickness :P

I'm on it currently and was also on it for months with my first pregnancy. I cannot function without it. It doesn't take it away 100% for me but it makes my life not revolve around being sick anymore, and some days I feel great. You can reduce your dose if you think maybe your MS is just improving with time, but there's a good chance it will come back with a vengeance (this happens to me every time I try to go down from 4 to 3 pills a day...with 1st pregnancy I couldn't come off of it until almost 20 weeks).

It made me super drowsy at first, but I either got used to being exhausted or that side effect improved. I'm still pretty tired but it might be normal pregnancy exhaustion. Better than barfing.
  • Emztron I appreciate your comment a lot (and everyone else's!). You're right- had I not just started diclectin, maybe I could afford some paranoia around ms improvement but- duh- I'm taking it so I feel better! I just don't remember this drastic a difference when I took it before. My appetite has finally returned! Just seems a lot of change for one pill a night. Also with my mc history I worry about EVERYTHING.
  • I take the American version. 1 pill at night before bed and 1 around noon. In the beginning the one at noon made me super sleepy, but when i stopped taking it i got really sick in the evenings. I still take one at noon but i am not getting as tired now. Maybe my body is use to the meds? Either way i am glad these pills are available. They were not offered to me in my previous pregnancies.

  • I am taking 1 when I wake up, 2 before dinner and 2 before my last snack.

It took a few days to a week for them
to take effect and now I can eat!! And drink water without puking it up most of the time ;)

It did make me groggy at first but I got over that.

My midwife also said I could take Gravol if needed - I take 1/4 of a 50mg Gravol on some days if I'm feeling really crappy and just need some peace.

Hope you feel better soon! I'm almost 11 weeks and waiting for turning point.
  • Also make sure you're taking them on an empty stomach and at regular intervals ... I learned this the second week of taking them and the results are even better!

2 hours after your last meal and then wait 30 minutes to eat afterwards.

I have reoccurring alarms set on my phone to prompt me to take these.
