Recovery/ first weeks

Re: Recovery/ first weeks

  • Any RCS mamas here care to comment on their recovery? Got one scheduled next week and just curious what some of your experiences are. Easier or tougher, about the same?

I am 18 days PP from my RCS. I think recovery was about the same as my first (first one was emergency, this one was scheduled). The one different I noticed was that my stomach was much more tender this time. I actually yelped in pain when the nurses would check for the size of my uterus, but I also had my tubes tied this time and I hear that can make it more tender. As much as I did not want a CS, recovery has not been bad at all. My incision is at the itchy point now and that is kind of annoying.
My first was also an emergency but 6 yrs ago. How long ago was your previous one? I heard that could make it more tender and painful too. Thank you for sharing your experience. Wishing you a speedy full recovery.
My first CS was 2 years ago. I hope your CS goes well.

  • I am one week out from my csection. Was taking Percocet one tablet every 4 hours and ibuprofen 600mg every 6 hours. I am out of Percocet and the pain is pretty bad! Anyone have any luck alternating between Tylenol and ibuprofen? It mainly hurts when i am going from a laying down or sitting position to standing, but it's enough to make me very uncomfortable. This is my 1st csection and it happened emergently after 30 hours of intense labor.

  • Has anyone had darkening of skin after having their baby? This spot suddenly appeared on my rib cage area, left side. It's dark pigmented, not raised and feels like normal skin. It just looks like someone dipped their thumb in brown paint and painted a "swoosh" on me. I called my OB and they said as long as it wasn't painful or itchy they'd look at it at my appointment in 5wks. Not sure if this is normal or what they said it was part of my linea nigra but it's definitely not part of that.

This happened to be with my first. I now have a small "birthmark" on my face. Apparently it can be totally normal for this to happen! (although, of course it's good your having your doctor check it out to be sure!)

Call and ask for a refill. You shouldn't be in pain. Your doctor should understand.

Thank you! I got an appointment with my dermatologist in a week and half just to be sure. But it's nice to know that this has happened to others.
  • @helsbels222 I am 8 days pp from a RCS and it has been SO much easier although my first (2yrs ago) was an emergency c-section due to pre-eclampsia and I was very sick. Last time I wasn't even transferred off L&D until the next day. This time I was on a regular ward 2 hours after, and up walking 7hrs later. I even left the hospital a day early. Pain wise I've been managing with ibuprofen and Tylenol #3, although I've bee doing regular Tylenol since yesterday.

Thanks for sharing. I have been hearing that recovery from scheduled RCS' have been easier from emergency c sections which is a little relieving. Happy to hear your recovery is going well.
  • Recovery is going well on my side. Had some stitches that are still slightly painful when I move. Having a bout of baby blue. Tried to breastfeed but I have a flat and inverted nipple that makes it super difficult to latch. Luckily, I can pump enough to make my little guy happy and full. I hope everyone's recovery is speedy and well.

@foozmeister9 - have you tried seeing a lactation consultant? I have a flat nipple and was able to get a nipple shield so now little man has no issues latching. (Lol although I have a feeling he'll always want to use the shield now because it seriously makes latching sooo easy for him - even when he's mad he can latch)

ETA he gained 6 oz from yesterday to today because of the nipple shield (we had a marathon eating that lasted alllllll night since he could finally eat)
  • Having a rough time right now. Gave birth on the 15thand have a 2nd degree tear. I have not had a BM yet and I am getting super uncomfortable. I recently developed some hemorrhoids which has not been helping. Taking stool softeners 2x a day. Any suggestions on how to make pooping easier?

Also struggling at night. LO is great during the day, but at night he does not like to sleep. Plus he never seems satisfied when I feed him at night. He has started screaming so bad that we have had to give him a little bit of formula to get him to sleep.

Also have some baby blues. Just feel so lost. Especially when LO is crying. I hope things get better and we can get the babe to sleep in the bassinet.

No advice on the poop front (other than you may need to call the doc and see if there's a stronger stool softener or laxative you can take)... Idk if just trying force it out will work (I was afraid to because of the tear but it's gotten easier. Now hemorrhoids are my problem).

Just wanted to offer you support on the sleepless front. My LO refuses to sleep unless being held, and he refuses to sleep period a large portion of the night. He is cluster feeding something awful (this last night he ate from 11:30-3:00 without stopping more than 5 minutes in between sides.) don't worry about your supply not being enough - your boobs are never fully empty and as they get emptier the milk gets more efficient (fattier and nutrient rich) so they don't need quite as much. It's really difficult being super tired and having a little one that just wants to eat and be held (and who screams like a banshee if he wants to eat even if he just ate and couldn't possibly be hungry). My LO is 6 days old today and I'm quite tired. I just keep reminding myself "this too shall pass." Eventually Zeke will sleep without the need for cuddles and he won't feel the need to eat for hours on end. I'm honestly doing my best to enjoy this time now because I know there will be days when I miss these nights of special mommy-son bonding

This is me! I had DS on the 15th as well. It was a very rough labor bc we went to the hospital thinking my water broke. They could never confirm, but was admitted due to preeclampsia. I was not dilated and was given cervidal and pitocin. LO's head was sideways and after 2.5 hours of pushing, my Dr decided to use forceps (baby was not hurt, thank God!) causing 2nd tears in my vagina and 3rd degree tears affecting my butt hole. Luckily, I don't have hemorrhoids. I have not had a BM yet. I have been taking percocet every 4 hrs. Ibuprofen every 6 hrs, stool softener 2x a day, and miralax once a day. I am TERRIFIED to go poop. My Dr told me it would take months for my butt hole to be fully healed. I am in so much pain if I don't take the meds.

LO doesn't want to sleep in his bassinet or crib. He wants to be held. We found out the car seat does the trick. We have placed the car seat inside his bassinet and him in it (he's not fastened). He's been out for the past 4 hours. I am waking him up in a bit for another feeding. We have tried everything else without luck. Also, he hates being swaddled.

    Good luck to you!
  • LO wanted nothing to do with the bassinet first night home so we got a rocknplay and she has been sleeping between all night feedings! I think she just likes feeling snuggled. Hang in there mommas!

Same with my LO! I'm just worried about transitioning her to her crib eventually, and when would be a good time? I have already put her in her crib during the day several times when she's awake, but eventually she just cries :( I'll let her cry for a little while in hope that she will self soothe but no luck so far. She will be a week old tomorrow. We will get the hang of it eventually hopefully!

I think we will try the bassinet again in a week or two. I've talked to a bunch of moms who have used the rock n play and some had difficult transitioning and some didn't. Probably depends on the baby.
  • So, for pooping. Take a pad, fold it, and hold it against your perineum / stitches / vagina. The pressure should help you be able to relax your rectal muscles and even push a little to poop. As for peeing, I still can't go on a toilet, I've had to pee standing in the shower since sitting without the pressure of the pad hurts too much and I can't exactly pee through the pad.
  • I'm 10 days out and my body is still so so sore! Especially my stomach :( I feel like I can't even stand up properly without pain. I had no tears or anything. I don't remember being this sore with my last 2. I went to the grocery store yesterday and man am I paying for it now! When will I feel normal again!!!!?????

My LO won't sleep anywhere except when he's being held. It's been somewhat frustrating because then I can't really sleep. But then I remember he spent 9 months comfy and close inside me. So if he needs that close comfort in order to sleep still, then I'm okay giving it to him (while still trying to get him to sleep without being held). I just keep thinking that it won't always be like this and I'll miss the days of late night cuddles.
  • Omg when will this PP bleeding stop? Everytime I think maybe it is tapering off I have more and more.

I had a 3rd degree tear but my stitches are healing nicely and haven't caused me too much pain, my main issue has been the hemorrhoids I've had constant pain from them and now in the last few days I've got thrush from wearing pads all the time and my stitches are starting to itch too so I'm just one big itchy sore mess down there!

I'm 2 and a half days out... my bleeding literally stopped yesterday then this morning I had a clot and started again. Apparently clotting is normal the first few days .

My biggest compliant is the after pains ...I guess since it's my third they are the worst. I would love it if they would go away now lol
I haven't had any meds in 24 hours so I'm just dealing with it

And my stitch feels like its pulling... kind of like it's irriatated but Idk whats normal.. i just hope theres no infection ,
guess I'll be calling the oB tomorrow

Anna is doing well she lost a bit of weight but she wasn't eating much the first 24 hours. She defiantly has her nights and days mixed up as she refuses to sleep during the night unless in our arms . So I'm sleep deprived for sure

Breastfeeding is not going great , my nipple are cracked ...fun. but she is getting some via pump .

11 days later and still clotting. I did for weeks after DD1. Also, the cracking and pain stopped for me at about 6 or 7 days. It gets easier!

6 days PP. My cervix tore and I had a third degree tear. The first few days were rough and day three at home I felt like I ripped the stitches out and could not move. I have been religiously using the dermoplast and tucks pads. I also made padsicles and take the donut everywhere. The bleeding is slowing down. I finally had a bowel movement today after taking colace three times a day and adding dulcolax because I have been terrified of straining. It still feels really swollen but I finally can manage on just the ibuprofen. Sitz baths daily have helped too. My biggest concern (besides my bottom) is the swelling in my legs and feet. I mentioned it in the hospital but they said its normal. My feet are so tight they have welts and I can't walk up or down my stairs. They throb all day. At least breastfeeding is going well. I haven't learned to sleep with the baby yet so I'm rocking dark circles, disheveled hair, leaky boobs, and balloon feet. How long do I go before I get concerned about the swelling? I was induced for preeclampsia symptoms but during delivery I had extremely low blood pressure. My mom is worried I have post partum eclampsia.

Mine swelled for about a week. I ask my nurse in hospital and she said, "it can last up to two weeks". My feet were better after a week.
  • Thanks @erinb5985 by then I have my follow up. I hope it starts to go down this week. Here's to a smooth recovery for all of us.
  • In General when does the soreness from an episiotomy start to lessen? I had one yesterday it feels like someone hit my privates with a hammer then lit it on fire and I'm so scared to be alone home with baby and 2 crazy dogs and hurting when I move...

I'm three weeks out now, and physically feeling much better, though my taint still hurts on and off (and I had no stitches or tears!! definitely feel bad for you ladies who did). I feel totally disgusting in other ways though, sorry for the tmi--super sweaty and smelly, my lines negra line is, if possible, darker and more noticeable than before, and I noticed that the peach fuzz on my face is super long in places, it's weird, especially since I thought you were supposed to lose hair pp?? Counting down the days till this fun stuff is over!!

After about a week I noticed that I could move without Major pain. by the end of week two I could sit on a hard surface with little pain. Almost to the end of week three and there is minimal swelling and I don't need ibuprofen anymore.

I'm exactly two weeks PP and I noticed difference at 1 week. I was still sitting on a pillow and taking Motrin but it was better.
At two weeks today, I haven't taken any pain medicine in 2 days and don't even notice it anymore unless I'm wiping after peeing.
Dermoplast worked great and helped a lot the first week. Use the peri bottle too....its best with warm water. Both are life savers for episiotomies!
  • So I just had my baby boy 6 days ago, my labor and delivery went great he was 100% healthy. Well 2 days ago he had his first check up at his pediatrician we get there and end up waiting for a half hour while sick kid after sick kid walks in. Coughing nonstop. So I have my so take him out to the car. We ended up waiting over an hour just to be seen and everything went great at his apt but now I'm so nervous my lo is going to get sick. I have been up so anxious about it especially because I have an itchy throat and ears so I feel like I'm Def sick. I've been breastfeeding him and I heard that helps him build immunity against my sickness. Has anyone had a baby catch a cold this young before? ? I already wake up in the middle of the night and constantly check to make sure he's still breathing :/ usually he wakes up 3 times to be fed at night and he's fine but tonight he's been so fussy/seems uncomfortable. Is there anything I can do to prevent him catching a cold?
  • Alright there is a light at the end this is misery I have to waddle to walk..and don't ever me started on trying to get up or down I'm ok once I'm there but the immidiate feeling when doing either is terrible..thank you @cdepperschmidt and @brianna91chavez

I'm in the same boat. Harvey sleeps like an angel during the day between feeds. I can hold him, put him in his basket or on his beanbag and he settles fine. As soon as it's night time he is the same except he won't settle for anything less than being held which is adorable but I need my sleep lol x

I feel your pain! I had one on the 9th November and a few days later the stitches actually split open too, which has made the recovery even longer and more painful. Woohoo! :-( but the last few days, I have actually been feeling better and I'm slowly starting to feel more like myself. Keep your legs shut as much as possible, don't sit with them open or crossed etc. Take your pain meds. Rest rest rest. You will get there. dont put a time on it or any pressure on yourself, people heal at different speeds. An ice pack at the end of the day for ten minutes before bed is also heavenly!
  • My recovery has been goin very well.

That being said, I'm 8 days PP and started cramping (like period) today.

    Is this normal?
