This is my first pregnancy and I am in week 15 day 6. To date I have gained 13 pounds. I was at 135 at the start of my pregnancy and now weigh 148. Am I gaining too much too fast? TIA!
I'd check with your doctor-- some like to strictly hold to the 20-30lb weight increase; others are more worried about fitness than weight. I will say that women tend to put on more weight for the pregnancy as the second and third trimesters progress. That's when more of the things in regards to the baby take on some significant weight. At this point, any gained weight is mostly increased blood volume (which doesn't weigh much), water retention from bloating, and fat storage.
Fwiw, I gained a lot of weight last pregnancy in the third trimester-- part was water retention and baby, and part was increased appetite...I'm going to try to keep my appetite in check this time around because even eating healthy things in large portions increased my weight beyond what it needed to be.
Like PP have said, it's dependent upon the person. At my 12 week appointment on Friday, I've gained one pound. We talked about weight and my doctor said that he expects me to begin gaining weight more frequently now, especially with the holidays upon us.
How much weight you gain depends on your BMI pre-pregnancy. So only knowing your pre-pregnancy weight and not your height, that's hard to tell. I found this great tracker which gives you a range of where you should be according to pre-pregnancy BMI. No matter the results though, I'd check with your doctor and see if there's any lifestyle changes that could explain the weight gain (less exercise while feeling crappy during the first semester vs eating whatever you can pit your hands on). I was about 150 pre pregnancy (5'6" and athletic), I had gained some weight when my husband and I moved and left Florida (and I was trying to drop some pounds)... Then we got pregnant. So I stopped trying to diet and just ate healthier. I'm 12 weeks and 5 days and I've gained 3 pounds. I haven't discussed weight with my doctor yet but I still "feel" super chunky! Lol I know it's mostly in my head but I'm also trying not to obsess (which I have a tendency to do) so I've stopped stepping on the scale but once a month. Which seems to be working for me! Lol
I did the tracker that @kidshrink suggested above my post and it stated my BMI was normal pre pregnancy and that I should gain 25 to 35 lbs. I hope that's all I gain! Lol my sister gained 60 in her first pregnancy!
I'm 15 weeks, 2 days. At my 14 week appointment I noticed that I hadn't gained any weight yet. I never threw up but felt bad enough that nothing ever sounded good. Doctor said that if I don't gain anything by my 18 week appointment, we may have to do something.
You might bring it up at your next appointment, but I'd personally not worry about it another minute. Everyone gains weight in pregnancy differently. A petite friends of mine gains 80 pounds, every pregnancy, and then drops it all in the first year. Weight gain isn't a one size fits all answer in pregnancy. Eat to hunger, drink to thirst, limit junk, and move your body, and you're good to go I gained a LOT in third tri last time, which worried me, but it was all water, I peed like you wouldn't believe following Vi's birth and by 2 weeks postpartum I was back to my prepregnancy weight.
I'd check with your doctor for any concerns at your next appointment, but everyone does gain weight differently during pregnancy.
I've gained 3 pounds according to my doctor's scale, but on my home scale I've only seen differences of 2 pounds between my starting weight and some days it still shows my pre-PG weight.
I can tell I've put on a little layer of fat all over my body, but I hope it's pregnancy-related and will come off with BFing.
I wouldn't worry especially if you are eating normally + the few 100 extra cals you are supposed to eat during pregnancy. Every woman gains weight/retains water differently. I didn't gain an ounce with my 1st until after 20 weeks and ended up gaining 30lbs at the end. History seems to be repeating itself again.
I've gained 1 pound so far at 16 weeks, BUT I began my pregnancy overweight and I'm sure it will begin to pick up as I get later into the second trimester.
My more petite best friend gained 48 pounds in her last pregnancy, and was absolutely fine. Like everybody else has already said, you and your doctor are the only ones who can really judge what feels correct to your frame. Even BMI charts don't always tell the whole story.
If you are not overeating, and not eating junk, I wouldn't worry too much. You can also look up foods that combat bloating (I think pineapple and grapes are among them, though other ladies may have better suggestions) to help with too much water retention.

I lost a lot of weight with DD and I've lost about 10 pounds this time around. The scale didn't start going up at all until after 20 weeks last time, but I made sure to drink ensure drinks so that I was at least supplementing some of the nutrients I wasn't able to eat every day. I'm not sure what your doctor would do for you, though. My doctor is being a little anal this time and making me go to appointments every 2 weeks until I at least maintain my weight. He hasn't said anything about doing anything though. You'll gain weight eventually!
Thank you for the insight ladies! I was at a healthy bmi pretty pregnancy and exercised regularly. My 3rd prenatal visit is coming up and I will ask my Dr to check my thyroid again. I have been working out still so I was kind of surprised to have gained 6 pounds since my last pre-natal appt. I am very petite and I feel like I look bigger at 15 weeks than other women I know. But I will definitely ask my Dr at my next appt. Thank you so much for the insight!
My pre-pregnancy weight was 130 and have gained 2/3 lb so far. This is my third baby and I found I gained a lot faster with my second than my first. It evened out and I still old gained 25 lb both times. I feel like the lbs are packing on faster this pregnancy. Cravings are harder to not give into
Just like you, before all this, I was at a healthy BMI, exercised regularly, keep going now, and I'd gained over 10 pounds by week 10. My doctor reassured me that he wasn't worried at all about my weight gain. He was more worried that I was able to deal with the morning sickness and tiredness, and since my stomach would only tolerate carbs, he was glad that I wasn't restricting myself from them. Here's hoping that your doctor is as comforting as mine!!
So far my Dr hasn't been too bad. I gained 7 pounds from the start of my pregnancy upto my second prenatal appt and she wasn't concerned about it. I just don't want to gain too much and have a hard time losing the weight after the baby arrives. I also don't want the weight gain to affect the baby during the time I have remaining.
I gained about 8 pounds in 1st tri. Admittedly I was eating a lot of pasta and bread, and not a lot of healthy choices. In the past week, I have been able to get veggies back in, and feel like I want to be healthier! I think that as long as you monitor your weight, and watch what you eat when you feel like you can eat, the gain can average itself out.
Speaking of which, on TTGP I started a weekly weigh in/check in. While I know we aren't supposed to be dieting, wondering if anyone would find it beneficial to have a weekly check in just to be sure we are not gaining too much?? And for some eating/exercise support?
Funny, I have almost the same stats as you - I was 135 pre-pregnancy, and now at 16 weeks and 1 day I've gained 14 pounds. I'm honestly not that worried about it. To be honest, with my last pregnancy I gained 50 pounds, which from a Dr.'s point of view is a lot, but I lost all of it within 4 months. I lost 20 pounds within the first 2 weeks! Everyone is different, but I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself right now. I know people who gained 65 pounds in their pregnancy and lost it quickly. As long as you're not sitting around eating all day you should be fine.
I always gain a bunch in the first trimester because snacking helps with the nausea. Everyone is different. I have always gained a lot and successfully lost it post partum.

I gained about five pounds in the first tri. I was on the high end of normal BMI. I would love a weekly check-in, although everyone has to use it for what they want it/need it for (i.e. some people may want/need to monitor their weight, others might feel that is inappropriate for them. IT's a touchy subject.)
I DO personally need some accountability for what I'm eating. I've truly eaten some crap that I haven't eaten in YEARS i.e. Taco Bell, Starbursts (???) white flour spaghetti, Ramen, bagels, donuts, McDonald's hash browns, ugh, the list goes on. This is not the usual for me and it's a problem (for me) to eat this way.
This past week I really made an effort to get back to my normal eating, which usually does include a lot of vegetables. My fall garden is doing GREAT and I have a ton of kale, swiss chard and bok choy in my fridge right now. Last night I made this turkey sausage/kale, whole grain pasta thing I like and tonight I'm doing a chicken and bok choy stir fry. I ate my steel cut oats with blueberries and almonds for breakfast this morning, which is my usual breakfast (when I'm not eating bagels, which I have vowed to stop. Again, I kinda fell off the rails eating-wise in the first tri.) For me, I think I can and should get back to eating my unprocessed diet. I don't because I get lazy and tired and think "Man, I'm gonna pick up [insert bad fast food item here] instead of cooking.) I want to stop that

I like this idea too. I think if we keep it open to talking about weight, foods, and/or exercise then it could be very positive. Like @vinerie, I've definitely had some things this first trimester that I haven't had in years and felt guilty about afterwards (...like a Whopper and onion rings...) I've only gained 2lbs so far compared to 7-8;bs last pregnancy, but I also know that if my pattern from last time holds, I'll be tempted to increase portions and may gain too much in the second or third trimesters. I'm really trying to stick to 25 lbs this time around if I can (but I also don't want to feel hungry!) I'd love a place to help to stay accountable because DH eats way worse than I do and so is no help.

Great, so Ill start something this week... I agree, it should just be a place to check in, not a place to feel bad about what you are eating or any weight gain. I dont want to be accused of being "obsessed" with weight gain again....For me, getting ideas of healthy recipes would be a great start!
I would like the check in. It seems like we like the support of others to justify our bad eating choices, so maybe if we are talking about having grapes as a snack instead of a chocolate shake, it could have a positive impact. I'm not saying we want to make anyone who indulges feel guilty because, hey, we've all done it. I think it should be just that though... more of an indulgence and not the norm. Now most of us are past the really yucky part, it might be easier to make better decisions.

I really like this idea. I was contemplating starting a thread on "easy but healthy" recipes. I think my No. 1 stumbling block is I get tired and don't have the energy to do a bunch of prep work and cooking to make a nice dinner. I have a couple "easy but healthy" recipes in my back pocket that are still warm and satisfying (i.e. not salads) but I want more. That would be a good thing to include in the check-in!
I gained 10ish pounds by 15 weeks in my first pregnancy and hoped to gain less this time. At 12 weeks, I have gained one-two pounds. I'm also petite 5'2" 117 lbs but even with just a two pound weight gain, I feel like I'm "showing". Everyone is different but I did learn from my first pregnancy they I would like to keep things a bit more in check this time.
I've gained 7 lbs. I'm honestly surprised that I haven't gained more. I think my aversion to chocolate and sweets has helped me keep that number down. I'd be excited for a check-in although it does make me nervous on a personal level because I have a history of disordered eating. As a pre-pregnancy rule I stopped weighing myself because I needed to feel good about my body regardless of the number on the scale. But this feels different and having a support system to check in with sounds like it would help me. Great idea!
I'm a first-timer at 14w2d and have gained about 5 pounds (started at 114, now weighing in around 118-119 most mornings). It's ALL in my belly, I think, which is good/bad from a body image perspective (like some of you guys, I have a history of disordered eating, which I've mostly kept under control and channeled into positive directions, but... it's a daily effort).
I have no idea what to expect for the rest of this pregnancy but it's been helpful to read where other people are and how they're handling it, so thanks everybody for sharing.
I gained about 8 pounds in the first trimester, and i freaked out at first, as all the stats and charts showed me I should not really have gained much at all!.
I was small before, about 125, (and not very tall anyway, 5.4), and I got scared that I might be rolling anytime soon.
But I called up some friends, and realised they all had very different weight gains, but at the end they all did bounce back. While some only gained about 15 pounds in their entire pregnancy whilst others gained 48 pounds (a very small framed friend of mine) and bounce back just the same. And other seem to not put anything for ages and gain their weight at the end.
I am trying not to freak out... But I am exercising more (walking, thanks to my placenta, as I can't run) and try to eat healthier, as I did end up snacking on crap like cereal quite a lot.
But I guess while everyone's weight gain will be different, if you don't stuff your face and if you try to keep moving.. It's gotta be ok, right?
Im almost 14 weeks and am only 1 pound down from pre pregnancy weight. Im 5'10" and 204 right now with a very muscular/athletic build. My doctor and nurses called me thin at the last apt if that put my 200+ build into perspective. So right now I'm negative 1 lb and honestly had been eating like absolute crap. Last couple weeks veggies and fruit came back with much more balance on the bad carbs. Right now my bad vices are ramen and bagels otherwise i have been good and balanced.
I guess my worry is that im supposed to gain between 40 and 50 lbs with twins. 1. I have gained nothing so far and 2. As bad as it is im afraid to gain that much. 3. And lastly i eat when im hungry and added caloric drinks like diluted pure cranberry juice or apple juice plus some milk along with my water. I plan on continuing with healthier options now that my stomach will handle it and if i dont gain weight i dont know how to force it. I dont want to be shoving my face with cake and ice cream for the sake of weight gain cause there is no way that there is good nutrients in the for my babies.
I am seeing a nutritionist who is helping me NOT gain weight and maybe even lose a little.
I am not feeling restricted at all, as I am enjoying food from all food groups and eating good, nutritional meals that is good for me and baby. I am not on a diet as such, just learning about the right foods.
But I am doing it with the help of two professionals and regular checkups.
I am also tall and scared of gaining too much (or any to be honest).
I'm not sure if mine and my doctors' opinions are unpopular though I just feel so much better knowing that my people aren't forcing me to gain weight if I don't want to.
Edit (add-on): I will make mention of the fact that I am at an unhealthy weight! I am definitely not thin.
@charissadeats i would love love if that were a healthy option for me. Gaining scares me since i work so hard in the gym to be healthy and muscular. Unfortunately with twins i actually NEED to gain weight and being considered healthy weight prior by my doctor i need to gain a significant amount. I went into labor with my first at 36 weeks. Now with twins and preterm being a thing for me in the past and being a bigger risk with multiples they want me to gain. 40 to 50 total and she wants 12-15 between 20 and 28 weeks. Aparently studies have shown gaining that weight during those weeks specifically drastically reduces preterm labor beforte 32 weeks with twins. We are aiming to make it to 35-36 weeks. but....i like your idea of a nutritionist. Might mentally help me feel healthy about the gain.
I'm very similar. Pre-pregnancy I was 135 (and 5'5" for those BMI folks) and I'm vegan so I eat almost all whole foods. I've gained about 12 pounds, which my midwife said was fine. I've really exclusively gained in my rump, thighs, and stomach. My family history shows that women in my family put on some weight early on because our bodies create a thicker base to carry the baby. Probably if I gain another 24 pounds in three months my midwife will look at me sideways but I'm not worrying.
Pre-pregnancy (and since I was 13 years old) I've been considered underweight by the chart standards - my body loves to hang right around 100lbs (I'm 5'4") and I haven't been able to deviate more than a couple pounds for the past 25 years despite different added-cal eating plans, trying to pack on muscle weight with more protein, etc. I've had thyroid panels done periodically, I get a full physical every year, etc etc., and they've never been able to find any reason why I can't seem to hold onto weight. My grandma said I have the metabolism and system of a hummingbird - it just never relaxes. I'm happy to say my appetite has gone into overdrive since I got pregnant and I feel like I'm eating twice as much as my husband on a daily basis but I've still only been able to put on five pounds - am 16 weeks this week. My doctor doesn't seem at all concerned since I'm perfectly healthy in every other possible way, except for being slightly anemic, and baby is doing fantastic and growing like clockwork so far.
I did have a cold for a week and wasn't quite as hungry and I lost a couple pounds immediately. That was a little disappointing.
I checked again today out of curiosity and the scale had gone down 5 pounds which brings me to only gaining 8 pounds in the past 16 weeks of pregnancy. I think I'm becoming paranoid now and just need to stop focusing on the scale so much and just eating right for myself and baby.
I'm 16 weeks and 2 days and I've gained 15 pounds already- 5 of them are probably in my boobs LOL! I think you're fine though- if you were gaining too much too quick, I'm sure your doctor would let you know.
just an update. Had my appointment today, i actually gained 11 pounds (14 weeks 5 days, weight before was about 125 pounds, 5.4 and vegetarian). I freaked out when i saw the number, midwife laughed and said it's PERFECTLY fine and not to worry a bit... :-) PEWWWW!!!!
Different people's bodies do different things. I gained 40-50 pounds with both of my first 2 kids AND lost it all afterward. It's just what my body does.
I'm 13 weeks today and I still weigh the same as I have always weighed for the past couple of years- 130 pounds. I must admit I've only recently stopped having bad sickness which usually meant I was sick 1-2 times a day but last two weeks I have been eating a hell of a lot (not healthy either) and weight still hasn't moved, not even a pound! Plus no sign of a bump yet! I'm kind of happy in a sense because I'm hoping it means I don't gain like 50 pounds throughout my pregnancy haha!! Had my scan a couple of days ago and everything is perfect with the little one!
I've gained 8 lbs so far, at 14w 5d. I'm ok with that, but trying to be careful. I gained 50 lbs my first pregnancy and had only lost half of it before beginning this pregnancy.

I'll be holding thumbs for you and babies and that you make it full term.
Good luck with the gain!
