@mellymar DH is a plumber and says the hot water is bad because of the copper and copper fittings. It gets into the water and that's why it's not safe. Also tap water has so many impuritys that babies can't have like copper, fluoride and even bleach. Boil it for one min and done! We put ours into a spouted containter in the refrigerator (leaving it out lets things grow in there) and its not to much work. I do 2 1/2 gallons at a time.

Bah, I got a Pur water filter. Much easier. 99% of all impurities including lead and metals.

Ok, I haven't scienced in a long time, but wouldn't boiling the water concentrate the impurities? It would kill microbes, yes, but not remove metals, correct?

That's why you boil cold water. It doesn't need copper fittings or piping like hot water does.

Now I'm legit confused. Cause 1) I also thought boiling would concentrate metals and 2) if you're using cold water because it doesn't go thru the fittings and all that so its OK anyway, then why are you boiling it?
ETA unless you are using well water. Which I just remembered you live in the country so you very well might be

I don't filter or boil water for formula - am I the worst mom ever? Maybe I should head over to 'parenting fails' after I go buy some baby water
I didn't either at first. I only got the Pur filter because my house is old so the pipes are probably also old. It was purely (haha) for my peace of mind. If my house was newer, or I knew for sure the plumbing did not have any lead fittings, I wouldn't have bothered.
ETA its probably just fine without it, otherwise the formula companies wouldn't say its OK to mix with tap water, you know? I think part of this is new mom freak out hype
@mellymar That's what I've always sort of told myself, that it's more of a CYA for the companies that they've warned you. But I hate to think I could legitimately be doing something that's not good for LO...I will get my formula water act together!
@swaugh14 yeah, this whole water thing has brought back my anxiety about the water, which is why I purchased the filter in the first place! I did see that the filter is certified by NSF, which is an independent water safety certification organization, which settled my feathers again, but I'm still all weirded out now. I've been wondering if I should test my water, even!
Hi ladies! So I have (2) $5.00 off vouchers for Similac that expire 12/10/2015 and I have (2) $5.00 off vouchers for enfamil that expire November 30,2015.... If anyone wants them I can mail them out tomorrow.
Does anyone have experience with Similac total comfort, gentlease, etc? We are moving to one step down from Alinentum and would love some opinions.
Gentlease was really good for my LO as far as being easy for her to digest and didn't cause too much gas. We use enfamil ar now though bc the gentlease is too thin and easy for her to spit up. We used a gentle form of similac before switching to gentlease and I was surprised how foamy similac was. Gentlease has almost no bubbles once it is mixed which is why I think it worked so well for us.

I haven't used the total comfort, but I do use regular similac advanced, and I also noticed its kinda foamy. But, you've been using the similac brand already. I know when it comes to animals, anyway, if you are switching from one specialty food to another, (senior to kidney, example) generally you have the best results staying in the same brand. With regards to a smooth transition, anyway.
Thanks ladies! Yeah Similac is foamy and hard to mix. But we've been on it for months now, so when we switch we may go to Similac Total Comfort as to not change too many elements at once.
@mellymar I love that you just compared feeding our LO's to switching dog or car food! Let me just say that feeding my children has been way easier than feeding my chocolate lab! At least the only food he can eat is fit for human consumption . . . My three year old eats a ton of it! Ugh.
We switched seamlessly to the Target version of what we were using with DS. I was scared about trying anything different but DH used up all our free sample canisters without telling me and it had no effect on DS. He was changing his formula every few days with no ill effects. He just told me this now as we start to plan for LOs formula. So of course he wants to sign up for every formula sample under the sun and run a new experiment with this kid. Great.

My sister uses powdered formula occasionally for on-the-go bottles and it seemed like kind of a pain. Are there any neat products I could buy her to make it easier?

Yeah, the pre made bottles lol I have not figured anything good out and we are on month 6!

Yeah the ready to feed formula is just pre-packaged formula in either one big container or smaller individual servings.
But I honestly don't find it a pain... You pour in water, you pour in your pre- proportioned formula, cap it, and shake. I guess she could make the bottles in advance, but then they need to be refrigerated. Easier for me to use one of those formula container things that hold 3 'doses' of formula and carry a bottle of water and empty bottles. Sure, I feel a little like a mad chemist pouring, mixing, and shaking while out and about, but whatever.
Yeah. Until I stumbled onto that I was needlessly complicating things by using super small tuperwares to hold my portioned out formula, and carrying along a small funnel everywhere so that I could pour the formula from my small tupperwares into the bottle. Nope. Now what I do is carry 3 empty bottles, a liter bottle of smart water, and that thing with enough in each compartment to make a 5oz bottle (what he is usually taking now). Much easier and saves space (in my bag it does, anyway) for more diapers, spare clothes, extra blanket
We even keep one of those little containers in our room and one in the kitchen. LO is not picky and eats his bottles room temperature. I keep his bottles prefilles with nursery water, dump in the premeasured formula, shake, and feed. When we were out of town for thanksgiving, I even used it for his cereal. One of those things I wish I'd invented
I'm jealous of you guys! We use Similac formula and it needs to be mixed for at least a few hours before we can feed it to LO. It sucks at mixing. So I can never make formula "on demand"

Ugh! This sucks! I use similac, too, and it IS pretty foamy after mixing and takes a lot of agitation. I have to shake for a while. Even if I premix bottles and fridge them, they still may be foamy at the top. I'm lucky that LO will take either room temp or cold bottles.
@ChardeeMacDennis We make all LO's bottles the night before or early in the morning so she doesn't have to wait and it's a lot less stressful when she decides she's hungry 2 hours later instead of 3 hours after her last bottle which happens sometimes. The most useful bottle accessory we have though is the boone grass drying mat! I think that's what it's called.. It's soooo useful, probably the most amazing baby product we bought.
We too make all bottles for the day on the night before. Not all the time on weekends, but certainly on daycare days since I don't have time in the morning. I wish we got the grass mat! It was on our registry but someone bought another one. And I was too lazy to return it.
Cross posting in case some of you only read this here:
Sigh I think our transition from hypoallergenic formula is a failure. Four days of trying and all ending in massive throw ups and rashes.
My pedi has given pretty bad advice throughout and the internet has minimal information about what the heck to do.
Has anyone else dealt with a likely milk protein sensitivity? Or weaning off hypoallergenic formula in general? I know it can be tough but we've done the "gradual" route and it's still wreaking havoc on poor LO.
@hoodoll82 sorry, I didn't think of this until I got over here - can you ask your pedi for a referral to a pedi allergist? I probably would, at this point
So we tried to give our first bottle of formula last night. It was a complete disaster. I mixed formula with some bm, and she still refused it. Any tips or tricks on how to transition?
@hoodoll82 im sure already looked into all of your new formula options, so this probably isnt new info, but we have a milk sensitivity with bm so I had to cut dairy out of my diet. When I asked the pedi about switching her to formula she suggested this brand called "bloom and blossom ultra gentle " I had never heard of it before, but that's what we are trying
Hey all! I did a search for this and didn't see anything, so sorry if I am asking a question that has already been answered.
My ped told me to have LO drink a little formula from a sippy cup at meals so that he gets used to the idea of drinking milk with meals. He's 6 mos old. Anyone else do this yet? We've only done it a couple days and he sucks at it, haha, and basically just dumps it on his tray and throws the cup at me. Anyone have tips/tricks/sippy cups they used for transition?
@SmashJam I'm curious about that, too. I got LO a Tommy Tippee "transitional" sippy cup and I tried it once with a little water for constipation issues and he chewed the heck out of it, but didn't actually drink anything
