^^ I own an insurance agency, and I sell annuities. They are a nice option for some people--they are easy. I have my husband's Roth IRA in an annuity.
I have my Roth IRA in a low cost mutual fund; a target date retirement fund.
One way to capture some of the market upside is with a fixed indexed annuity. These go up with the market but don't go down. They don't earn nearly as much as being in the market during good market years, but they don't lose value when the market dips. You can turn them into an income stream when you retire.
You could roll your 401k into an annuity, which would be classified as an IRA. Most have minimum initial investments, usually $2000.
Insurance agents in your area would be able to help you with the specifics.
Sorry for sounding like a salesman. I'm just trying to add to what @enigmaticjj mentioned above.
What can I do to help relieve LOs teething pain? She doesn't like teething rings so far. We give her Tylenol most nights because she's so fussy and it's clear it's her mouth (shoving her while hand in there, chewing on bottle nipples, etc) but I don't want to keep relying on Tylenol bc it's not healthy long term. Help?
The all natural orajel and teething tablets seem to help our LO. I also talked to a friend of mine who's into essential oils and she said clove oil is also something I could try, but I haven't tried it yet and will ask her doctor before I do. I've heard that orajel with benzocaine can potentially numb a young baby's throat so it makes it hard to swallow and I wonder if clove oil could do the same.. And before anyone says anything, I know you're supposed to be careful using oils on a baby
I have to be that person. Sorry. Please be careful with the gels and hylands teething tablets. My mom told my sister to stop using the hylands because of belladonna toxicity. Here is a link to the FDA's video about it. Orajel has also had some issues linked to it. Even the natural kind.

I'm gonna have to bust out the coconut oil, aren't I? Can you ladies help me work out this rash on LOs tummy? Its been varying degrees of severity, some days only 2 or 3 red spots, some days roaming all over his tummy like today. The skin is very dry, a little flaky where its red, and the area where it isn't red is almost pebbled like he had tiny goosebumps. It was there when I took him to him 4m appt and the Dr said it looked like contact dermatitis (something touching his skin making him break out), but this is a relatively new thing within the last 2-3 weeks and we have not switched detergents, and it can be either better or worse at different times of day or different days - meaning if its related to a specific fabric type, I can't figure out which. some days I thought it might be related to the slightly heavier, softer footed jammies because it would have been better after spending the night in a cotton onesie (in his sleep suit). But then I'll have a situation where it was around yesterday (while wearing the softer jammies of the fabric in question), but not as bad as this morning, after he spent the night in a cotton onesie. Also, I'd think if it were due to whatever the fabric was, he's also break out (maybe not as bad) on the other areas it touches, like arms, legs, thighs. And while I do get eczema sometimes, this isn't itchy to him (he doesn't even act like its there), and just doesn't look quite like eczema. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out.
ETA you can actually see the 'pebbling' I'm talking about on his skin. You can feel all those little textures.. Its so bizarre
@mellymar Could it be folliculitis? I have it in my arms, doesn't hurt but looks the same. Mine is caused by a strep infection I believe. Could you have passed it on by delivery? Mine flares up and down with no patterns. Poor little bubba
So with thanksgiving coming up I need to figure out a way to get LO to sleep in/on something other than her bed obviously since we'll be out of town. She won't sleep in the pack n play, and the bed we'll be in is way too small for her to try to sleep with us, and I wouldn't trust myself anyway to do that safely.. I guess I could just make a pallet in the floor for her? Any suggestions? The weekend will be stressful enough without the addition of a sleepless baby, and will be stressful enough on her so she definitely needs her sleep..
ETA - there won't be another bed for her to sleep on top of, my sister will have a house full of guests.
^^^ I'm in a similar boat. I'm just going to bring the pack n play and hope for the best. I'd be worried about the floor because the babies are so wiggly now and getting more mobile.
@mellymar that looks like an allergic reaction to me. Mine had a reaction to detergent (we think) a few months ago and it looked like that. Or could it be heat rash? Maybe he's getting too warm in the warmer Jammies? Or have you introduced any solids? Maybe a reaction to something he hate?
@Sjeff0816@ashleymc09 could you guys just bring your LOs mattress with you guys, and place the mattress in the bottom of the pnp? I believe the 'bassinet' basket (the mesh part you clip over the edges that hangs down into the pnp a little bit) has a 15# weight limit so it would probably not be safe to put a regular crib mattress in that, but for one or two nights it would suck, but I could deal with reaching down to the bottom of the pnp if my LO was on his regular mattress there. Especially if it meant he slept regular away from home.
@Sjeff0816@mishmardhiono I'll check both of those options. I have considered maybe something I'm eating is causing it, but I don't think my diet has changed much since he was younger and didn't have this problem. We have changed soaps, but only AFTER this started because we thought his previous soap was causing it. Gah!
@mellymar That's a great idea too, I'll definitely check it out and see if it fits, it looks like the mattress might be too long, but I'll check and see bc that would be ideal!
@mellymar your poor little guy! DD was having some pretty bad prickly heat when I wore her, or when she slept in those fleecy jammies. I would just wipe her down with a wash cloths morning and night, and she only wore cotton. Now she sleeps in a fleecy sleep sack with cotton jams under then. I don't know if it's heat rash, but water doesn't hurt, so if you want to try just wiping the sweat and grime off of him it's worth a shot. She doesn't get it anymore, and I slather her in cetaphil lotion after a bath.
@mellymar it looks like eczema to me. My LO had it very similar to what your describing. I only use soap 2x a week and coat him in aquaphor after every bath. It took about 2 weeks to completely go away.
Hyland's changed their formula after the 2011 recall. Rumors of a new recall are false. I would argue that all Medicine has potential risks. Do your research and use what you feel best with
Thanks ladies I get nervous about any "natural remedies" for some reason. For now I'll try a wet/cold washcloth!
Same here! All natural doesn't necessarily mean 100% safe, right? You can get really sick from ingesting all kinds of plants, etc, even though they are "natural."
Meh, I'm only giving teething tablets every few days, and only one at a time. Literally one tablet every 3 days, or less. So I'm not too worried about them overdosing on anything.
@mishmardhiono They dissolve on the tongue. I tried some myself and they dissolve really, really fast and don't really have any taste. I give LO one before bed if he's fussy cause of his teeth, easy to get it on his tongue since his mouth is open crying. If he's still upset 30 minutes later I'll give him one more.
How often are you changing your lo's crib sheets? I feel like I always forget to take them off and wash them unless she gets sick. I think I remember ever 1.5-2 weeks.

Has anyone had any issues with ingrown toenails post pregnancy? Since having LO by c section I have suffered with uncontrollable folloculitis and abscess' on my toenails. Never had this issue before! Do you guys think maybe I picked something up in the hospital?
@mishmardhiono - actually there was another poster who asked the same thing a few weeks ago. So there are three of us with this problem anyway! You can see her question and my answer below. I hope they just go away on their own...they're sooo annoying...
Has anyone experience ingrown toenails since being post partum? I don't get it ever since I had my LO its been one after the next and now they are getting infected and worried they will have to remove it
Yes! I have 4 places where my toes are ingrown (ew!) that I thought were caused by a pedicure I got for my sister's wedding in May that keep coming back...maybe it's a post pregnancy thing too? Does that happen? Haha.. They're really annoying bc I'm constantly stubbing those toes on all the random baby toys in the floor so it's been a constant source of frustration for me..thanks for bringing that up so I could vent
My new changing mat is waterproof, so I haven't bought a cover for it. I wipe it down daily... is that gross? why does it need a cover that gets soiled if the mat itself is waterproof? I feel so ignorant asking this...
I think you are smart...there is really no need for a cover - day cares don't use covers (just steri after each use) so I don't see why that would be different at home. I think the covers are good for the cold winter month changing sessions because the plastic is cold, other than that a cover really isn't necessary...I think it is one of those things that people like to make look pretty to match baby's room...but totally not needed

I have a waterproof mat, too. But I do put a soft cover on it. simply for the sole reason its soft. If he pees while I have the diaper off and I have to deflect by throwing an opened diaper or wipe over his junk, it all ends up on the cover, and I'll change the cover and wipe the mat underneath off. But otherwise the only time we use the changing pad is when I am changing him out of his overnight pee diaper in the morning and into his clothes for the day, or at night into his nighttime diaper and sleeping onesie. Or if he poops, which he does every other or sometimes every 3rd day. And I've become quite proficient at lifting his bum before removing a poop diaper and getting it cleaned up before setting it down on the cover. Since its mostly used for changing clothes, I consider it pretty clean in the grand scheme of things. I maybe change it not quite weekly, but not less than every 2 weeks. Or if it's obviously dirtied, of course.
Favorite paci through the washer. Do I need to to toss it? Or is it just really clean?
We use the Wubbanub, and it says it can be machine washed, then air dried. I'd say if it was just washed, you're ok. Dryer? I'd get a new one.
I tend to agree with this, tho I do not have a wubbanub, nor do I know if any of my pacis are ok to be machine washed. After suitable examination that all parts are still suitably attached and none are melted.
Yep definitely make sure of structural integrity that would be my number one concern. Also a really thorough wash/rinse in case there are laundry soap residues trapped on or in it. If you could find the exact same one I would probably just toss it.
Funny story about pacifiers.. LO and I were on his way to his circ appointment (months ago) and through some miraculous set of events I literally threw his pacifier into a toilet.
For half a second, in an irrational state, I stood there looking at it wondering if it would be possible to sanitize it because it was his favourite. Looking back I laugh so hard but at the time I was tired and desperate. Of course I quickly came to my senses and scheduled a trip to Walmart after calling to advise that we may be slightly behind schedule due to a series of unfortunate events lol.
Go easy on me.. We all have those kind of moments don't we?
Eta: Phew just realized this is flame free... Hahaha. Also words are hard at 1:30am.
I don't follow this at all and think it's insane but pacifier companies want you to toss out/throw away every month. True story. Tommee tippee and other websites. I'm not going to listen.......

I've seen this on the packages of pacis when I buy them and sanitize them (I'm not a sanitizer freak, but I do sanitize new things, and throw in some of my established pieces when I do new pieces). I think this is a liability thing. I doubt they're going to fall apart, but I do hand wash them frequently, and while doing that I'm obviously feeling it, tugging on it, squishing it. Over time, I've accumulated 8 of his favorite brand, so I'm able to rotate them frequently and thus are washing one or more paci pretty often.
A girlfriend of mines son was sucking on An advent dummy and the silicone part detached in his mouth but he's a year old with lots of teeth. I think once they have teeth you need to rotate and check mire frequently because they do damage them but before then I'm not that concerned

@423ang oh thanks! I didn't know I could do that.. I'll see if I can find one!
We also use the cover because he loves petting the super soft material it keeps him happy and comfortable.
When he's got particularly dirty diapers I throw down a plastic wipe able mat that is usually in diaper bags.
I'd say if it was just washed, you're ok. Dryer? I'd get a new one.
