I'm 38 weeks, 4 cm, and 80% effaced. Mucus plug is gone and everything is ready according to doctor. Tried other induction methods and have some contractions but nothing serious.
The dangers of castor oil far outweigh the benefits of (mind you *early*) induction. It can be very dangerous for baby and extremely unpleasant for mom.
Only if you potentially want to harm yourself and your child. The amount of horror stories that go with castor oil are terrifying. Also, if you're going by the current standard in the United States you aren't even full term yet - 39 weeks is the newer full term recommendation.
If people can't wait the average 40 weeks to meet their baby, they shouldn't get pregnant! (medical reasons and supervised medical induction excluded obvs)!
OP don't do it, like others have said, the risks far outweigh the benefits, and for the sake of a few more weeks it's not worth it!
Just an old 'bad apple' with no home to call her own, lurking in the shadows :-)
Castor oil is nasty stuff and will make you poop your brains out. It also increases risk of baby passing meconium in utero, which can be dangerous. At 38 weeks, it is definitely not worth the risk, and IMO, you're better off with a medical induction if you go late. Let nature take its course, try some safe natural induction methods (pineapple, Sex, exercise, etc) and be patient!
No. Just no. You're 38 weeks and already way more ahead than I am, dilation/effacement wise. I'M not even willing to do anything to try to induce at 38 weeks. Once you're at least 40 weeks, feel free to do things besides castor oil. Baby will come when it's ready. Geebus.
Opinion on castor oil is nope. Opinion on trying to induce early without doctor recommendation or guidance is nope. OP, the answer is nope. Don't do it. Your body will do what it needs to do on its own time. We're all large and in charge and miserable, so just stick it out. I find Netflix and naps to be a good distraction.
Just in case you're still considering this even though everyone already weighed in with great advice - just NO! Please don't do this. It's a terrible idea.
NO! NO! NO!! OMG! Just let your baby come when he or she is ready! You're almost there! We are all almost there! Just let nature take its course. Have you done your research regarding the dangers of castor oil?!
We are all miserable exhausted and beyond done, but why risk hurting your little baby and or yourself from taking something that has been shown to possibly be dangerous just because it didn't hurt one persons baby doesn't mean you won't be as lucky. I personally wouldn't chance it hang in there and give it time why not try other things walking and or finding a hobby or catching up on a good tv show to pass the time.
Honestly, if you care so little about your child, give them up for adoption now and then get yourself fixed. You are not fit to be a parent.
If there's something strange underneath the hood. Who you gonna call? Your Doctor. If there's something weird and it don't look good. Who you gonna call? Your Doctor. Immediately. If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor. It's for your health and your child's.
Everyone is so harsh. Let me be completely honest with you. First of all. She could have googled it and yes it is every where now that you should NOT. Big risk to baby. Not worth it.
5 years ago, I did it with my first. I drank a tablespoon. It was my own decision and I was so fed up. I did a lot of research and no where back then did I find any warnings about the dangers to my baby, otherwise I wouldn't of done it.
Would I do it again? No. Its not worth the risk. But that's why people are here, to get other opinions and experiences. Baby is ready when baby is ready. I'm 39 weeks and didn't think I'd last this long, TBH. I am miserable and going crazy. But when your body is ready, baby will come. Stay active and get on that yoga ball. Nothing can start labor, I am convinced at that. I've done EVERYTHING. Just a whole lot of false labor. So be patient and enjoy the little kicks! They will come as we know it.

My husband said I'm slowing down our Internet because I watch too much netflix. Lol.
And OP don't do that...it's not safe. I'm 40+2 and I wouldn't even think of it!!!
I would NOT! Anything that poses the risk of baby swallowing meconium while in the womb I'd stay far from. My mom tried convincing me to use castor oil (since for her it "worked").. I read up on risk factors and decided to pass. However, my baby still swallowed meconium and has been in the NICU since he arrived. I haven't gotten to hold him yet because he's been in an air helmet and has a tear in is lungs from trying to breath. They were worried his lung might collapse. Thankfully, it did not. I would just wait it out to hopefully avoid putting your baby through this. I can't imagine the guilt I'd feel if I had somehow done something to cause his meconium swallow. Just be patient, baby will be here soon enough

@toniherdt so sorry your LO is stuck in the NICU! Prayers for his quick recovery and that he comes home soon! Thanks for sharing your story, the more moms are educated about the danger of meconium (a normal occurrence), hopefully the fewer will take the risk of inducing with castor oil.

Everyone is not being harsh they are just being real. This is not the first post about castor oil. OP should have used the search function and googled before asking this on here. She would have seen the multiple posts and responses to this moronic idea. I appreciate how honest and "harsh" all these women are. It shows they give a crap about other people. Everyone is miserable right now. But if you can't wait another +/- 2 weeks for your baby to be ready she should have thought a little harder about having a child.

Thank you very much! I'm hoping he is out soon! It's definitely worth the share if it'll help a few more babies make a smoother transition into the world

No one was being harsh. They were being honest. She's not even full term and is considering doing something that could gravely harm her baby. She deserves to hear some very harsh words.

I'm appalled that there are people out there who would actually WK child abuse. Yes, I believe knowingly causing harm to your unborn child for selfish reasons is abuse!
Wow! Just wow at the judgment from this group and the evil remarks! Is castor oil recommended in US anymore? No. Is it in other countries? You bet! Some doctors do actually recommend and not everyone has used the flippin search function or are on this site as often as those that clearly get soooo upset if someone repeats a question. If you have already responded or read about it, what is the point in responding! CALM DOWN and relax. She was asking - it doesn't make her a bad mom or someone who shouldn't consider children!! Talk about rude!
OP - I'm with you. I have considered everything natural but castor oil isn't the answer. I'm hopeful medical induction isn't necessary as I'm sure you are. But good luck and take good care - only a little longer before we have that beautiful bundle in our arms!

Clearly you haven't lurked here. You need to calm yourself down.

Why don't you and OP consider waiting until baby is ready? You both do realize and EDD is just that, an estimate correct? My God what is with some in this board and expecting an EDD is an "absolutely must have by date". This isn't a gallon of milk we're talking about. The baby will come when the baby is ready. Everyone wants to meet their LOs, whenever that may be.
It's not my story to tell, but there is a regular here who tried castor oil with her first. She's having some medical issues right now so I'll paraphrase what I remember about her story. She tried castor oil with her first. Her first was born with a health issue. Was this issue caused by the castor oil? No one knows. But the fact is that it may have been - she'll never know if her oldest wouldn't have had this issue of not for her trying to induce via castor oil. She's posted about this before, but I can't find the post since I'm mobile/I won't share her name without permission.
So honest question time - in a few months will we have WKs defending the women that are considering giving their children booze/OTC meds that aren't approved by their pediatricians so that their LO will sleep?

... you mean I can't give my baby zzzzquil? Before someone calls CPS on me, I swear I'm joking. Lol
Re: opinions on castor oil to induce?
I was gonna give you a longer answer I just can't right now.
Also, search function.
Again, no.
And you aren't even 40 weeks. Why do you want baby here? Have some patience. Baby will be here when he/she wants and is ready!
Married 9/28/13
DS born 11/12/15
EDD 8/13/18
Edited to fix region.

If there is a genuine medical reason for delivering early then your doctor will take charge of suggesting that.
Being fed up isn't a medical reason.
She's not even full term and is considering doing something that could gravely harm her baby.
She deserves to hear some very harsh words.
