I'm 38 weeks, 4 cm, and 80% effaced. Mucus plug is gone and everything is ready according to doctor. Tried other induction methods and have some contractions but nothing serious.

  • No. No. This method isn't worth even a mention. I don't know why this is named as an option. NO.
  • The dangers of castor oil far outweigh the benefits of (mind you *early*) induction. It can be very dangerous for baby and extremely unpleasant for mom.

Only if you potentially want to harm yourself and your child. The amount of horror stories that go with castor oil are terrifying. Also, if you're going by the current standard in the United States you aren't even full term yet - 39 weeks is the newer full term recommendation.

    Edited to fix region.
  • Yoga ball !! I got one yesterday and already feel such a difference :)
  • Just in case you're still considering this even though everyone already weighed in with great advice - just NO! Please don't do this. It's a terrible idea.
  • NO! NO! NO!! OMG! Just let your baby come when he or she is ready!
You're almost there! We are all almost there! Just let nature take its course.
Have you done your research regarding the dangers of castor oil?!
  • Why try to induce at 38 weeks already? And do not do castor oil!!!!!!
  • We are all miserable exhausted and beyond done, but why risk hurting your little baby and or yourself from taking something that has been shown to possibly be dangerous just because it didn't hurt one persons baby doesn't mean you won't be as lucky. I personally wouldn't chance it hang in there and give it time why not try other things walking and or finding a hobby or catching up on a good tv show to pass the time.
  • Have you even googled it? First warning that comes up is don't use if you're pregnant .
  • Everyone is so harsh. Let me be completely honest with you.
First of all. She could have googled it and yes it is every where now that you should NOT. Big risk to baby. Not worth it.

5 years ago, I did it with my first. I drank a tablespoon. It was my own decision and I was so fed up. I did a lot of research and no where back then did I find any warnings about the dangers to my baby, otherwise I wouldn't of done it.

Would I do it again? No. Its not worth the risk.
But that's why people are here, to get other opinions and experiences.
Baby is ready when baby is ready. I'm 39 weeks and didn't think I'd last this long, TBH. I am miserable and going crazy. But when your body is ready, baby will come. Stay active and get on that yoga ball. Nothing can start labor, I am convinced at that. I've done EVERYTHING. Just a whole lot of false labor. So be patient and enjoy the little kicks! They will come as we know it.

Opinion on castor oil is nope.
Opinion on trying to induce early without doctor recommendation or guidance is nope.
OP, the answer is nope. Don't do it. Your body will do what it needs to do on its own time.
We're all large and in charge and miserable, so just stick it out. I find Netflix and naps to be a good distraction.

My husband said I'm slowing down our Internet because I watch too much netflix. Lol.

And OP don't do that...it's not safe. I'm 40+2 and I wouldn't even think of it!!!
  • I would NOT! Anything that poses the risk of baby swallowing meconium while in the womb I'd stay far from. My mom tried convincing me to use castor oil (since for her it "worked").. I read up on risk factors and decided to pass. However, my baby still swallowed meconium and has been in the NICU since he arrived. I haven't gotten to hold him yet because he's been in an air helmet and has a tear in is lungs from trying to breath. They were worried his lung might collapse. Thankfully, it did not. I would just wait it out to hopefully avoid putting your baby through this. I can't imagine the guilt I'd feel if I had somehow done something to cause his meconium swallow. Just be patient, baby will be here soon enough

@toniherdt so sorry your LO is stuck in the NICU! Prayers for his quick recovery and that he comes home soon! Thanks for sharing your story, the more moms are educated about the danger of meconium (a normal occurrence), hopefully the fewer will take the risk of inducing with castor oil.

Thank you very much! I'm hoping he is out soon! It's definitely worth the share if it'll help a few more babies make a smoother transition into the world :)
