@dancegurl1118 will think about it and PM you :) Still wary of sharing too much personal info here (the people online I've done it with are part of a group for my town...although to be fair I have no way of knowing if they are axe-murderers...)

  • @hoodoll82 no worries I COMPLETELY understand...my father raised me to think everyone's out to get me.

  • I am still really new to formula and curious about what you all do regarding the following. 1. Do you put gas drops in every bottle? 2. Do you just use regular purified water (like from our fridge water purifier)? 3. Anyone had success getting their LO to start drinking it room temp (right now he refuses bottles that are less then 105 degrees....yes he is that picky!)? Thanks!

We stopped gas drops after they clearly didn't work (I guess they don't work for every LO) but when we did, yes we put them in the bottle.

Yes we used the water from our fridge filter.

LO takes cold formula but I think it's because all we ever gave her. Unfortunately I think they get used to whatever you start them on. Good luck!
  • @AlwaysSunny1012
    1) I don't need / use gas drops, but if I did I would probably add them to the bottle
    2) I use tap water but started using a pur water filter at the kitchen source tap due to concerns about lead. Apparently if your house is older they can use lead solder in your water pipes inside the house and it can leach into the water. Not enough to be of concern for an adult or a child eating solids, but for an infant whose diet comprises of water based formula it would be a concern. Our house is over 30 years old, so...
    3) I make the bottles as I need them. I run the water cold for a minute then bring it to lukewarm and then turn on the filter and make it up. He has taken cold before tho, when I was in a hurry. He didn't seem to care

  • Isn't it unfortunate and sad that we live in a society that would try to make moms feel guilty for doing their best. Really, if mama's happy, baby's happy, and baby is thriving, WHO CARES whether your baby is breastfed or formula fed. Your baby is fed and that's all that matters. I get so SICK of nipple nazis and their breastfeeding bullcrap. You do what's best for you and I'll do what's best for me. Seriously, it gets so out of control.
  • Yeah I actually think we have the most practical board on The Bump! No nipple-nazis that I've seen ... Mostly everyone struggling (and supporting each other) equally!

Especially considering each method of feeding has its own set of challenges. Since I both bf and use formula every feeding, I definitely have aspects of each that I like and that I don't like. I think we are all just practical enough to know that what works well for one person may not work well at all for another.

With the breastfeeding and pumping and bottle feeding thing my anxiety is sky high when leaving the house. I feel like a different group of people will hate me each step of the way... At least here know one cares and I get to "talk" to people. I can't believe the misinformation spouted about BFing to get people to "try" harder. Even now with a ton of known issues causing problems that frankly seem common enough when on boards the BFing people around here keep making it seem like LO and I are freaks of nature for it to not be working with all we've been doing. They "just can't understand."

Edited to say one of my IBCLCs is going to write a case study on us
  • @janit368 I was just talking about this today. We've done everything. I can't physically see an IBCLC anymore than I already do and she's still tearing up my right nipple and not draining it fully and I keep getting baseball sized clogged ducts. I really don't understand. I'm anxious, frustrated, disappointed, and most of all stubborn so I keep going. I have a feeling going back to work on Monday will be the tipping point and I will throw in the towel. Which kills me because I feel like I have never worked harder at anything in my life than breastfeeding these past few months. Humph. Cheers to you my friend, I know your struggles have been similar.

  • Any tips for introducing formula? LO is 13 w/o & has had only BM. I'm just not producing enough/having enough time at work to pump for daycare, so I want to do a mix. Some BM & formula. I still will pump at work & at home if DH gives bottle, but I'm stressing for no reason.
Also, any advice for mom's who give BM & formula?
*we have similac advanced as a sample to try*
  • @krystleshel both similac and enfamil sent me samples of formula specifically made for supplementation for breastfeeding. I don't know if they sell it in the store but it's worth googling!

@janit368 @dancegurl1118 yeah, this pissed me off. My 'baby care and feeding' class was given by a LC and she was all pro breastfeeding, which is fine, but in class she just kept acting like breastfeeding is the easiest thing ever. Her answer to most anything - "just give the breast". I'm on two different bf support fb pages, and sometimes someone will post about suggestions for increasing supply, and the ladies all chime in with the supplements, the recipes, pumping, the usual stuff. But there is usually also this undertone of if you can't make enough after adding in a supplement and drinking more water, you're not working hard enough at it. "Just keep working at it and you'll be fine!" Well, damnit, I worked at it *really* hard and still can't make enough, so don't assume that because it was easy for you because you ate some oatmeal that I'm not wanting to be committed to this and just slacking off cause I don't try hard enough.

And like, @dancegurl1118 - your problem I find heartbreaking. Each time I read about you getting a clogged duct my heart sank for you. Here you have great supply, but still events still conspire against you to make it difficult. 'The most natural thing in the world' is NOT easy. Nowhere near as easy as 'they' make it seem

Edited because I'm beginning to hate my phone, it just adds and/or removes words or letters at will

  • @dancegurl1118 cheers to you. Don't quit on a bad day so you have no regrets and remember you can do both (if you want to). I think once we are past the year mark so feeding isn't such a big deal anymore no matter what happens I will look back on this as a huge accomplishment and be super proud of what I did. I know you will be too!!
  • I will say that I don't think my homebirth team gave me enough info/support after my LO was 3 weeks early. My doula was an LC and dropped the ball on warning me on risks to supply and ways to try to keep him awake to eat. End of the day my fault but I paid you a lot of money!! Makes me so mad. I've been feeling better saying it out loud. 7 stages of grief anyone?

We are using distilled water. We started out using filtered water but he was constantly struggling. We switched to distilled and it has made a HUGE difference! It's super cheap and comes in gallons so we just buy a few at a time and keep them out on the counter.

Just curious I've never heard of

Go with a good organic formula.. Hipp or holle, baby's only, or honest organic . Just know any formula will cause increased GI symptoms and this isn't a reason to keep switching formulas...this is VERY hard on Los system and not a way to determine what's working because, well your LO will be miserable from switching. Your pedi should tell you this but I find a lot of moms switching up frequently without talking to their pedis first.. And they think the result is "every formula they try didn't work for them" and their babies end up on soy which is not good.. Please do some research and talk to peds! :)

  • @Handree we did a lot of discussing formula here. I hope this helps!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @HayesRN13 this might have been discussed but I've looked at baby's only and it says toddler formula. I know it's rated one of the best...why does it say that?
  • @amccoy129, Baby's Only says toddler formula on it because they recommend that you breastfeed for the first year...like I didn't feel bad enough because I couldn't breastfeed, now the formula company is giving me a hard time, sheesh...but I digress, I do use Baby's Only and it is an excellent formula and agrees with my baby- it can be used for babies under a year- no need to change the proportions or anything, it is a great organic choice!
  • @CheerfulMama thanks! Thinking about starting on some formula soon and this seemed to be one of the best but was confused

    @amccoy129
Sorry such a late response, it does say toddler because they only promote breastfeeding for the first year, but it's components are complete nutrition for 0-12 :)

^^ I agree 100%. I still give myself a hard time that BFing didn't work out for me. We are fortunate.
  • How much is your LO eating?
We've been at 7 oz every 3 hours but he's waking up starving in the morning. We moved to 8 oz but he started spacing out his bottles to every 4 hours. And what happens if he needs more than 8? I can't find baby bottles bigger than 8 oz!

My LO eats 6 oz every 2-3 hours. My husband just found a pack of 3 Avent bottles at target I think that hold up to 11 or 12 oz - I was surprised bc all the other bottles we have only hold 8-9 oz.

We just had to tweak my LOs feeding schedule because of weight gain concerns, so don't base too much off of us. LO is now supposed to have 4oz every 2 hours. I was doing 6oz every 3 hours, but this way he gets an extra 2 oz a day, and the pedi thought he wasn't getting enough overall the other way. I also bf some, as well. We try for 20oz of formula daily. I have a petite, slow to gain baby, so I'm actually trying to sneak in more food, lol

  • LO drinks 7ozs every 3 hrs or so. I told the dr at her 4 month appointment and she seemed shocked. But she's happy so that's all that matters. We use tommee tippee & those go up to 9 oz. hopefully by that time she will be on solids and we won't have to go up anymore than that!
  • LO drinks about 32-34 ounces a day. Typically 6 ounces per feed. She had a large leap last week at 5 months, was drinking about 26-28 ounces a day before that.
