Feeding lo - October

Re: Feeding lo - October

  • LO had one that was attached under her gum. She couldn't flange her lip when breastfeeding. I got it revised. Apparently 90% of lip ties come with a posterior tongue tie which LO definitely has. We also got that revised but it reattached and I'm not going through the pain and struggle of another revision. A lip tie can cause the teeth to gap, as well as early onset tooth decay due to particles getting stuck. A frenulum can be attached but not be tight. If you can flange LO's lip up then it is not an issue.

  • If feeding has been going ok then they probably won't revise it. Make sure you go to someone with knowledge of them though as it can cause problems with eating and speech later depending on the type. Also look up MTHFR. That can be the family link. I found out I have this, let my sister know and she got tested and found out she has it too
  • DD has a serious lip tie that was undiagnosed. It took 8-9 weeks until it was no longer excruciatingly painful for her to latch. My mom and I discovered it and I went to an oral surgeon. He said not to do anything about it unless nursing was painful. We still wanted it done as a preventative measure, but after talking to my mom's boss (a dentist) he also said to wait until permenent teeth come in. He also claims that if I no longer have trouble breastfeeding, then the frenulum has probably stretched out and it shouldn't be an issue with eating, speech, etc in the future. So we are waiting for now.

@mellymar I wonder the same things! I see he slumped in her car seat and I wonder if babies get sore necks or

My left boob is also the bastard boob. Produces half as much as the right. I made lactation cookies last night that I hope will work enough that I can pump a few more ounces a day to store. The only thing I've noticed so far is that both LO and I have been gassy. It's either that or the kale salad I ate. Whoops.
  • Lo had a lip tie also. I did get it cut because I was having pain when she would nurse. It was probably less traumatic because she was younger. I think around 2 months old we did it. As they get older it will be worse for them (although I'm thinking of being 1/2 years old and older) I'm so happy we did because my poor nipple hurt so bad.
  • My right boob was alwyas the lower producer.  I have been able to get its production up a bit recently.  My left boob was always nuts on production...like way too mucuh of it, and i've also noticed that it is down pretty substantially recently, to where now when i pump during the day i get about the same out of each.  And now that LO STTN and i cut my MOTN pump, when i pump at 5am the right is actually producing a few ounces MORE than the left somehow.  I'm a little nervous because i knew no matter what the left would always have something in it if LO wanted to eat, but now i'm not so sure anymore.

I will note that i suspect i may have ovulated last Tuesday, and if i did i'd expect my first PP period early next week...so that could also be the reason for the slightly lower production, as i have read that happens to some women.  If that's the case it should go back up after my period starts.  Which will make me happy when i'm pumping during the day and get good production...but will depress me MOTN because i was so excited that in the past few nights it wasn't painful for me to cut the MOTN pump session, and if production goes back up that might not be the case anymore.  I am breaking even on pumping and occassionally having a small surplus of 3-4 ounces, so it's not really the end of the world, and i'm probably just getting concerned for nothing.  I mean i have 600+ punces frozen.  If i have to break into my stash it is not a big deal.  I need to settle down.

  • Case study of one but I had a very severe lip tie and had surgery at age 11. My mom had no trouble breastfeeding. My LO has one as well, not as severe. We planned a revision at 3 days but by 6 days it was stretched out and we canceled it. If your LO nurses well I wouldn't think its an issue. Both my kids nursed frequently at night, just how they are I figure. Its so hard to know on all this stuff. I tongue tie can be a massive issue for nursing or it can be a complete non issue.

  • ^^ @henrytviii my sister had a lip tie and had oral surgery maybe around the same age. Do you remember if it was a big deal to you at that time? My sister to this day - while grateful she had it done as it caused a largeish gap between her teeth - she still says it was the worst thing ever. I'm sure part of it is memory painting it worse than it was, but its making me nervous for if LO has to have it done when he's bigger
