Hay ladies, hoping for some advice. I have found out that i have an anterior placenta, and google tells me it means i will have to wait much longer to feel movement from baby. Has anyone found this to be true/false?
Me too. My sil is a gynaecologist and just had her first baby with a placenta anterior. She started feeling movement at 18weeks and says you don't necessarily have to feel movement later.. Depends on the position of the placenta (middle, low, high)
Woot! Sorry, b-( misery loves company. I'm in the same boat. My doc told me my placenta was also located in the anterior. She says it's not definite but it usually provides extra padding so it's harder to feel baby at first.
I had anterior placenta with my dd and it was true for me! I didn't feel movement until 19 weeks and for a while it was hard to feel kicks and everything... I had no issue feeling hiccups though! And once she was bigger and really rolling around in there I felt it all!
Thanks ladies, im sure we will get our turn eventually! Ive also heard that anterior placentas quite often lead to posterior deliveries which really scares me as i know a few people who have had them and they all had quite traumatic deliveries! Hopefully this isnt true for all cases
I was told today I have an anterior placenta as well such a bummer we won't get to feel them until later. My doctor said its like kicking into a pillow. It will absorb all the kicks & wiggles first

Posterior delivery? I don't know what that is but it sounds scary...
I had a partial anterior placenta and actually still felt movement pretty early. However, I only felt half of the kicks so towards the end I had t get an nst every week because I had high blood pressure and could never pass my kick counts because I just rarely felt him move. The minute they hooked me up to the machine you could tell he was bouncing all over though.
My dd was sunny side up (posterior position) when I had an anterior placenta with her. It caused awful back labor! But I ended up having a c section for other reasons, so I don't know what vaginal birth is like with posterior delivery!
Yes, true. I've had an anterior placenta with my three previous babies - first I felt around 19w, second baby I did not feel at all until 25w (talk about panic!), and baby number 3 was 22ish weeks.

My with my first pregnancy I had an anterior placenta. I don't remember when I felt movement, only that it was later that expected and I remember being mildly pissy about that. I don't know whether she was posterior as my last ultrasound was at 18 weeks but I definitely had back labor (awful!) and she was ultimately delivered facing the way they prefer (not sure of the terminology) with forceps- after 4 hours of pushing, which I'm sure had everyone to do with the fact that I suck at pushing haha.
@soxfan9968 posterior delivery means the baby is facing your belly during birth instead of your spine. It can (but not always) lead to forced back labour, longer labour and much greater risk of an episiotomy. Slightly greater chance of c-section but not much higher then the norm. I want to go to a birthing centre, but if the baby stays posterior i will have to go to hospital as higher chance of complications.
I had anterior with my 3rd daughter... I didn't feel like I had to wait longer, but I seemed to feel most of the kicks lower, so I'm guessing under where then placenta was.
If it's your first, you may be waiting for a while yet anyways.
So I was told today that I also have an anterior placenta. I am concerned because I am having a c section due to a previous medical issue. Has anyone's dr. mentioned this? My OB acted like it was no big deal. Just looking for other input. There is a lot of stuff about complications during delivery, blood loss/hysterectomy (wtf?!?!?)
Posterior placenta with my first, felt consistent movement at 16w. Anterior placenta with this guy and I only started feeling consistent movement around 18w. So yes, definitely took longer and definitely freaked me out before I found out about the placenta placement.
I too am a little concerned about the potential c-section risks, but the only studies I've read show that there is no clear correlation between anterior placentas and increased risks during c-sections. Anyone find any (reputable) studies that say otherwise?
Having not had any ultrasounds, I don't know for certain, but I'm strongly suspicious that I have one too. I'm 20 weeks and have only really felt baby within the past week. This is my third pregnancy and I felt my other two MUCH sooner than this and their movements were a lot stronger by this point.
The increased likelihood of a posterior delivery freaks me out a bit too. I've been through that before, so I know I can do it again . . it was a hard labor though and one that I was hoping I wouldn't repeat.
I also have an anterior placenta. I don't feel any abdominal kicks yet at 20 weeks, but I feel it when he uses my bladder or cervix as a punching bag. Often times that happens when I'm trying to get comfortable for bed time. Haha Also if my bladder is full, he seems to get mad that it's in his personal space.
I have an anterior placenta, as well, but I felt my first flutters around 15 weeks. I feel like there was almost a week where I really didn't feel anything maybe around 18 weeks. Now at 20 weeks I'm feeling her a bit more consistently and at different times of day rather than just in the evenings. My doctor has brought up several times not to panic if it's not consistent or really obvious until later, so I'm not really paying a ton of attention to when I do or don't feel her.
Also, I had previa but it looked like it already gotten out of the way last week. That could have been why I had a period of not feeling anything, I guess.
@maelic I also started feeling movement at 18 weeks this time. I am 21 weeks now and am feeling baby all day, not just at night. I don't think it really impacted my ability to feel him. Its my first one so I know it typically takes a little longer.
I am going to do some further research on the anterior placenta/c section risks and will let you know. It seems right now that if the placenta is low and anterior it causes a larger problem. It also means we may get some extra ultrasounds in the weeks prior to delivery to locate the placenta and make sure it is not in the incision area.
I have had a very easy pregnancy so I am just hoping I can keep going with that flow until delivery
i actually made a post about this on the 2nd Tri board, lol. most ladies there said they had to wait until some time after 20 weeks. i personally felt my first little movements at 18 weeks & a little kick between week 19 & 20. they're tiny little movements tho & i dont get to feel him move everyday yet.
I have one as well. OB told me the same thing you ladies heard...no feeling of movement until a little later on, but I have felt consistent movement since 17/18 weeks so....!!! Now I guess it's a waiting game when outside people can feel the movements.
This pregnancy is my 4th anterior placenta! With my 2nd, I felt absolutely nothing until 25w. This time I felt movement much earlier but it hasn't been consistent. Also explains why husband can't feel the little bits that I can. None of my deliveries have been posterior, thank goodness, but my last little one was posterior the entire pregnancy until the day before he was born. I did lots of positioning tricks to get him to turn around.

My husband "might" have finally felt baby boy last night laying in bed. He felt something from the outside and I didn't feel it, but his hand was on the placenta area. So weird!

With my first it was anterior and I really didn't feel her until 26 weeks... with this one I felt her at 16 weeks and it was so strong I thought something popped inside me!
Found out I too have an AP! I figured I did as I would feel movement early but it seemed muffled not frequent and very light. Now I am 20wks with the bambino measuring almost a full 2 weeks ahead (yikes!) And I feel him moving around all the time but that only started 3 days ago. It will come!!
I'm also part of this group with an AP pregnancy. I felt kicks early on then very random. I'm a late term loss mom so it really mess with my mind because by loss was the same with kicks. My team of doctors are great and even I can go in anytime I'm worried for an u/s.
With my rainbow between I felt kicks all the time once they started. BUT when I delivered him posterior he wanted to see the ground first. I didn't tear or anything, my doctor just used a lot of oil even with lo overly big head. My h laughs about it now because how much they used. I didn't realize until he told be later.

I have an anterior placenta this time. It's low and smack dab in the middle of my belly. I felt my baby boy early, but only on the sides and couldn't figure out why I couldn't feel him right in the middle. The u/s tech confirmed it yesterday, though. I'm just glad it's not covering my cervix. I had that last time and it was a whole other worry. I'm starting to feel the kicks in the middle, but they are very muted compared to those on the sides and at my belly button.
Im 20 weeks now and sometimes feel the occasional movement. FTM but i am pretty sure its baby. Some days i feel it quite a few times but some days i may only feel the tiniest little blip. Had AS today and they confirmed baby is fine and lying trasverse very low over my cervix and placenta anterior right over where my belly button is. Explains why any movement i do feel is down low!
I was told Friday that I have an anterior placenta. I've been feeling the little flutters though since week 14-15. I'm 21 weeks now and DH felt him for the first time last week. I feel kicks on the outside all the time now. They also said he was really low- his head was on my cervix. So maybe the placenta is up higher?
Hi @CalebsHabibi that may have something to do with it. I am 21 weeks now and feel a few movements every day now down low, usually when i am resting or sitting/lying down. At my A/S last friday they confirmed placenta is still anterior but high, which explains why i still get to feel lower movement. Some ladies placentas are anterior and quite low, so they may not feel anything until further along when the baby gets bigger.
I'm grateful for this thread! I am a ftm and also have an anterior placenta. I have a colleague who is due with her first only a week and a half before me and she had been feeling tons of movement for awhile! I get little flutters here and there but they aren't consistent. The ultrasound tech calmed any fears when she told us and let me know it was normal not to be feeling much until later with this placement... Plus our baby was rolling around like crazy during the whole US so that was encouraging! I hadn't been told by the tech or my midwife that this could lead to back labor, posterior delivery, or increased risk of c-section. I plan on having an unmedicated birth so I'm hoping this isn't true in my case. My sister also had an anterior placenta with her first and a perfectly normal birth
i was getting way low down and a bit to the side kicks last night. kept trying to get husband to feel it, but he always loses patience "my arm is tired" LOL wimp

I just got home from my AS and found out I have anterior and low lying placenta. Any other moms have experience with the low lying issue? My placenta was at 2.5 cm above the cervix today. My nurse told me that they won't consider having a vaginal birth with anything under a 2. I am thankful mine is just above, but it still worries me a bit. She also let me know that there is still a good chance that with time it may continue to move up as I will only be 20 weeks tomorrow. Anyone else have experience with this? And I'm right with everyone else on being a little nervous about not feeling movement. I have only been able to feel baby move for four days now and it went straight from feeling nothing to daddy being able to feel baby kick. No flutters in between. Very thankful to be feeling our LO... Finally! :x

Mine was partially over for DS1 so they said partial previa - but it moved up by the time they rechecked at 28 weeks and had no issues. Just remember everything is still growing/stretching so chances are it will keep moving up.

Thanks for the input. The nurse said I wasn't previa (I'm going to have to go do some research on what's what as I don't know what this is), but that I shouldn't worry much about being low or anterior. I had to see a new provider today as my usual Doc is still new and sends all his AS patients to an office with more experience. I am definitely going to ask more questions at my next appointment!
Oh! Thanks! Your comment helps a lot then. I'm glad to hear you say things moved on up for you. She said there was a pretty good chance that's what would happen with me as well. Thanks for the reassuring words. As unconcerned as the nurse seemed, I'm going to try not to worry about it too. Worrying won't get me anywhere anyway.
