  • @dshannah my dog picture announcement aside, I do know what you mean. I actually freaked out after we posted it because it isn't really my style to post much to Facebook in general. Husb calmed me down and basically told me it is OK that I wanted to do something different than I usually do out of excitement, and I know it is... but I do still feel a bit weird about it if I'm being honest.
  • @dshannah - I sort of agree with you, although I think that's pretty much the point of Facebook, right? To make a big deal about things that you care about way more than other people? I am not a cheesy announcement person or gender reveal party type of person, but I don't mind seeing other people's announcements. Sometimes they're cute, and sometimes they're just fun to laugh at.

Also, random thought, the fact that someone interrogated you, and the same thing happened to me when I didn't announce my first pregnancy, is proof that some people actually are really into that kind of thing. A lot of my FB friends go crazy over the cutesy announcements. I don't get it, but I'm grateful to have some friends that aren't as boring and conventional as I am!
  • UO... I am not a fan of gender reveal parties for several reasons.

1st- The name gender reveal. It's a sex reveal party people.

2nd- Do I need to bring a gift to this shit? I know I'm going to be invited to a shower too. WTH!

    3rd- I care but then again I don't

4th- Although I'm not team green I'm still uncomfortable with the rush to box a little person in with pink v. blue. trucks v. dolls. Can't they breathe air before they get categorized?
Lol, yeesss to all of these.

We plan to do a reveal but only to immediate family, maybe a few close friends. Nothing over the top, just a way to share the news at once. And I wouldn't expect gifts.

Me too! And I'm not a bandwagon fan either, I've been obsessed since I was a kid! I do have to admit that it bothers me how popular it all is now, though
  • Even though we did a unique reveal, it was for 2 reasons - we both have huge families a do due to moving several times over our relationship due to military and job reasons, our friends and families are spread across the country. FB was easier than calling or messaging every person. Plus, I scrapbook and love to do things like that. But I get your point @dshannah!!

I am totally guilty of doing the really obscure and unintentionally vague FB announcement with my son. I had this stuffed bunny that I had since I was born and put it in a diaper and wrote "A Toy Story" about how this bunny has been with me through all these different stages in life, went to college with me etc. And now, Mocha Bunny got to help me practice diapering!

I think people were just generally confused at first because it looked like just a random picture of a bunny in a diaper and the caption was so long, I doubt anyone actually really read it. I got some snarky responses about my stuffed animal having incontinence because he was so old (gotta love my friends) and then a few who got pissy at the snarks because they knew and they would respond "She's pregnant, you jerk!" It was just weird.

So, yeah, no weird ambiguous announcement this time. We are doing a Chirstmas card, but will have already told the family by then so it might just be MH, my son and myself holding a onesie saying "Baby Sister/Brother" since we will know the sex by then.

My UO is I can't understand why shows like American Horror Story, Scream Queens or even Game of Thrones are so popular. I can't even read the recaps without gagging. And this is from someone who has debrided infected and necrotic wounds! There is something so disturbing and visceral about blatant violent gore that just turns my stomach. I can watch surgeries and assist with medical procedures (the only time I got woozy in nursing school was when I got motion sick watching a very high-paced colonoscopy) and I usually have an iron stomach. But watching people get disemboweled or their throat slashed just makes me so upset, I wouldn't be able to enjoy any storyline or suspense.

ETA: I totally didn't even see that @yogahh had the same UO when I posted. Guess not quite so unpopular!

I don't understand American Horror Story. All I hear is how great this show is, so DH and I decided to give this season a go. Watched episode one last night, and my head is still reeling. Is this really considered "good" television??

Watch one of the first 3 seasons. AHS is another one of those shows that started out great but as time goes.... whomp whomp! (include in this list Grey's and Scandal)

  • laurenmdrn16 Ugh I hate Game of Thrones. I couldn't keep anything straight and I also hate fantasy genre literature, film, etc. So I think my aversion toward the genre, combined with too many characters and stories, combined with the gore just became too much for me. The hubs loves it, though.

Yes! I was so skeeved out by the first few episodes of season one. I really tried to watch it because so many people recommended it, but I just couldn't.

Don't even get me started on Scandal. How I made it through 4 seasons of that drivel I don't know. In all honesty, I LOATHE Fitz and cannot watch the show because of him. Totally Team Jake!

I love, love, love AHS and also obsessed with the show too. I don't know why I like it. It's super twisted and dark and I love it.

I liked the earlier seasons of Scandal (S1 especially), but I can't stop watching just yet.  I'm with you with team Jake and honestly, I'm not even digging Olivia as much as I used to.  Honestly, all of the characters are getting less likable.  Well, except for Mellie.  I'm liking her more and more!

Anybody notice that Shonda Rimes uses same actors to play characters across her shows too?

I'm having a "party" with the people who will actually care, parents and siblings. Everyone else can find out later and on FB.

Here is a real UO: I hate cute and clever pregnancy announcements. Like all of them. Just freaking tell people. In person: "Mom, we're having a baby!" Done. On Facebook: "We're having a baby!" How hard is that? We don't do it for other life events, why this? And because of the pressure to be cute and clever, most of them just end up being incomprehensible! For example: I had a friend who posted a pic of a bassinet with her and her husband's favorite things in it, and I'm like: you're announcing that you're going to run a marathon with turtles in California? And no one cares as much as you do. And no one cares how adorably or cleverly you announce it. It's not like a proposal where you're showing someone who is an equal partner in your life adventure that you want to keep having adventures with them: literally this affects no one more than the folks who announce it. Brought to you by the friend who interrogated me last night at dinner about what our announcement would be and was dismayed when I insisted we wouldn't. Like I have time to plan that shit. I'm too busy mucking about on these boards.

Girl, preach!  I had a friend who tried to announce it by cryptically talking about how they were going to have to replace her oven because there was stuff baking in it (some kind of take on bun in the oven).  It resulted in everyone being very confused, trying to help her fix her oven and recommending appliance brands.  I don't think that's how she envisioned it.  But I have bolded the best part of your response.  You can apply that to your entire pregnancy.  No one cares as much as you do.  Maybe your parents.  This is why I also don't understand gender reveal parties.  I mean, I like hearing the news of what my friends are having, but I don't want to go to party and have to wear a damn pink or blue shirt, and write my guess on a stupid chalkboard, and then have to fake supreme excitement when your dog comes running out of the house in a pink sweater.
This made me LOL so hard. I agree 100%. I enjoy seeing pictures of the gender reveal on Facebook. I'm happy for them, I can "like" the picture and move on. But good lord, no one but the couple and the grandparents are excited enough to make an afternoon out of it.
